Dear Reader,

While early polls show Democrat Bill de Blasio with a big lead in the mayoral race, the Jewish community is up for grabs, with Orthodox support leaning toward Republican Joe Lhota. Assistant Managing Editor Adam Dickter reports.

Montessori schools, which favor an individualized but highly structured approach to learning, have been around for a century, and Julie Wiener reports that Jewish Montessori programs are gaining traction here.

My column focuses on author Yossi Klein Halevi's long, difficult struggle to do justice to seven of the heroes of the Six Day War, tracing the conflicting political, ideological and social causes they have championed since. The result, after 11 years, is his remarkable new book, "Like Dreamers: The Story of the Israeli Paratroopers Who Reunited Jerusalem and Divided a Nation."

Also this week, "Sukkah City," the movie; Yehuda Kurtzer on President Obama and The Anxiety of Ambivalence; Israeli Correspondent Josh Mitnick talks to Israeli experts on the Syria crisis; Sandee Brawarsky on the new Chagall exhibit at The Jewish Museum; and in a poignant essay, high school senior Miriam Lichtenberg recalls fleeting memories of her mom, Jewish Week columnist Rifka Rosenwein, whose tenth yahrtzeit will be observed next month.

Enjoy the read, Chag sameach and Shabbat shalom,

Gary Rosenblatt

How Israel's Voice Became His Own
Yossi Klein Halevi's 11-year struggle to tell the story of the war heroes who reunited Jerusalem and divided the nation.

With "Like Dreamers," due out Oct. 1, Yossi Klein Halevi, an American-born writer and journalist living in Jerusalem, has written a powerful and haunting book about the soul of modern Israel, focusing on the lives of seven Israelis, members of the famed 55th Paratroopers Reserve Brigade. These men helped reunite Jerusalem in the 1967 war and went on to become exemplars of the social, religious, political and cultural impulses that divided the country, from Peace Now to Gush Emunim, from Torah scholars to kibbutz leaders to a revered musician, Israel's Bob Dylan. read more...
