Without the generosity of our many supporters and volunteers, we wouldn’t be able to make the impact that we do on our community.

That is why it is with great joy that we celebrate our hardworking staff here at Hospice of Santa Barbara. I’m very pleased and excited to announce that one of our longtime employees, HSB counselor Mary Wagner , was recently awarded “Older Worker of the Year” in Santa Barbara County.

Our Mary is most deserving of this recognition. For the last 16 years, she has worked as a Bereavement Counselor at Hospice of Santa Barbara, comforting those who are grieving or facing a life-threatening illness. Her warm personality and kind heart help alleviate the fear and loneliness some of our patients experience during the most trying times.

"Their Story," by Tianna Swede-Laskin
" As a social worker, I cannot medicate a patient's pain. My role is to see a patient as part of a family system with a past, present, and future, within their own cultural context. [...] Above all else, my duty is to ensure that the patient and family I work with are authoring their own story."
"Stargazer," by Kathryn Sweeney-James
"And then you were released,
like stars in a blanket of
Deep black midnight"
Read Kathryn's poem, "Stargazer," in memory of her late husband. Originally from the small village of Rocky Hill, New Jersey, Kathryn Sweeney-James was raised in the Princeton area and earned her B.A. at Westmont College. She twice double-handed a 42 ft. sailboat to the South Pacific and spends her leisure time in Santa Barbara hiking and writing.

We celebrated our volunteers with a Luau-themed Volunteer Appreciation party on Thursday, May 24th, to show our appreciation for all of the meaningful work they do serving people in our community living with serious illness.
During the program portion of this event, each volunteer was presented with an individualized card that was read aloud, including a quote from a person or family member whose life they have directly touched.
