MESSAGE FROM JOHN
So much has happened with no signs of slowing down. I'm almost at a loss as to where to start. My thoughts and prayers to all those affected by Harvey, Irma, and Maria. If you need assistance, please let us know.  We'll get the word out!

We have a winner from the Corporate Membership Drive. I want to thank everyone for helping to raise awareness and funds for FMA. We had two solos in July - one in an aircraft and one on stage at AirVenture. Summer NAMM, in Nashville, was filled with lots of music, music merchandise, and hospitality. AirVenture was the best yet for FMA. Our bi-annual trip to Lancaster, PA was a success. Looking forward to AOPA fly-ins in Groton CT, Tampa, FL and the DeLand Sport Aviation Showcase. HangarJams? As the weather cools we're looking forward to hearing about yours.

Congratulations to all who participated in the FMA  Corporate Membership Drive. Let's not understate the effect that raising awareness has. Even if an organization doesn't jump on the FMA bandwagon now, by presenting the pitch they now know who we are and that we are making a difference. You can still download the pitch to email to prospects from the corporate member page. While there, view those who have jumped on the FMA bandwagon and thank them.

We have a SOLO! Sarah Coffelt from Tullahoma, TN soloed on July 10. Sarah was your 2016 FMA Solo recipient. This is so exciting! Visit FMAsolo.org  to read her story, see pictures, and to congratulate Sarah.   We now have two solos with four in the wings!

We have another SOLO! William Knauth soloed under the direction of Prof. Paul Shuch at AvSport of Lock Haven, PA. William is the first of the class of 2017 FMA Solo recipients. The other three on right on his heels!

A huge thanks to all those who are supporting the FMA Solo Program, especially: Bose Aviation, Sporty's Pilot Shop, MyGoFlight.com, Gleim Aviation, Heaven's Landing, Aviators Hot Line, Banjo Ben Clark, 121five.com, Trade-A-Plane, Quality Aviation Services, AvSport of Lock Haven, Harv's Air, and Murfreesboro Aviation.

Thank you Gary and Janet Piper, TN ambassador, for the outstanding hospitality during Summer NAMM. I flew into Gallatin (M33) where Gary retrieved me and we headed to downtown Nashville. We met up with Isaac Hill, 2017 FMA Solo recipient, and Vaughn Skow. Isaac sure had a good time
checking out the various saxophones, mouthpieces, and reeds. We had a great time immersed in his enthusiasm. I was able to deliver the SparGuitar that was won by Vaughn Skow. Vaughn has a few mods in mind so stay tuned for that story.

AirVenture was extraordinary.  Special thanks to all the members who performed to raise awareness and funds. Through donations we nearly raise enough for two scholarships. A highlight for me was introducing Aaron Smokovitz, one of the 2017 FMA Solo recipients, on the Theater in the Woods stage prior to his trumpet solo with the AirVenture Concert Band. Aaron did a marvelous job!

Every other year the Lancaster Airport (KLNS) holds a two day event dubbed Community Days. This was our third time participating with huge support from Bristell Aircraft, Sensenich, and so many others.  What a wonderful event to introduce folks to aviation, music, and the FMA Solo Program.

We work extremely hard partnering with top rated events to generate opportunities for members to participate.  It's fun! Spending time around aircraft, performing outreach, and perhaps sharing a few songs. The opportunity to participate carries many perks as well. There are three major opportunities left this year: AOPA Fly-Ins (CT & FL) and the DelAnd Sport Aviation Showcase. Check them out and let me know if you can spare some time to help raise awareness and funds for our programs and scholarships.

Please join me this month in welcoming Hartzell Engine Technologies LLC. They purchased Sky-Tec who were long time sponsors and very good friends. Hartzell's  support means so much as we strive to grow programs and scholarships.

Until we meet again, I wish to thank you all for your dedication, efforts, and support.

Stay engaged and enthusiastic!

Blue Skies,

John

HOME FIELD SPOTLIGHT
Your Home Field
FMA members come from all over the world. In the interest of promoting our members, their airports, and aviation, we thought it would be interesting to showcase one member's home field each month.

This month's Home Field Spotlight focuses on Jack Barstow Municipal Airport (KIKW) home to student member Aaron Smokovitz.

Tell us about  your airport:
Jack Barstow Municipal Airport is a general aviation airport located in the northwest area of Midland adjacent to the Midland County Fairgrounds and the City forest. The airport's airfield encompasses over 500 acres and serves the needs of 65 based pilots, many of whom fly for recreation and business.

The airport is named after local pilot John "Jack" Barstow, who lived in Midland and became adept at flying gliders in San Diego, California. On April 29, 1930, Barstow established an unofficial world record endurance for gliders by soaring a Bowlus sailplane at Point Loma near San Diego for over 15 hours. As an instructor at the Bowlus Glider School, Barstow helped train Charles and Anne Lindbergh in gliding in 1930. The former Midland Airport was renamed Jack Barstow Municipal Airport shortly following Barstow's death in 1935, at the age of 29.

What makes it special/unique/interesting/fun?
Each summer, teens have the chance to learn about the wonderful world of flying through the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Aviation Camp at Barstow Airport. This 5 day day camp is open to teens entering 10th - 12th grades in the fall, and offers a variety of information on:
  • Aeronautics
  • Aircraft
  • Airports
  • Aviation history
  • Occupations in aviation
  • Weather
  • And much more
Visit them online at Jack-Barstow-Municipal-Airport

EVENT RECAP

Summer NAMM - Nashville, TN
This event has grown in popularity. This year Janet and Gary Piper played host. The were incredibly gracious! Isaac Hill and Vaughn Skow were also in attendance. So much going on that it's hard to take it all in.  Isaac had a great time checking into the various instruments and accessories. One of the highlights was the  American Eagle Awards dinner and the other was the look on Vaughn Skow's face as he was presented with the SparGuitar. Perhaps he was wondering how he was going to tell his wife that he's bringing home yet another guitar.

The American Eagle Awards is a prestigious award given each year to artists and other influential figures for their pioneering contributions and, just as important, their support of the American musical culture and heritage. The National Music Council bestows the honor.
Three artists were recipients: country star Crystal Gayle, actor/musician Harry Shearer and rocker Patti Smith. Their presenters were equally impressive: Richard Leigh, Paul Shaffer, and John Ingrassia.

This and The NAMM Show in Anaheim is made available to FMs through the FMA's partnership with the NAMM Foundation.

While on John and Gary Piper went to lunch at the local Mellow Mushroom on Broadway, a patron was spotted with a t-shirt about pilots. Gary approached to see if he was also a musician and guess what? Kent Nicholson is indeed a musician and pilot and a member of FMA in from Chicago for the weekend. Kent was wanting to connected with old friend and fellow musician Gary Filip (FMA Life member). They played in college together. Things happened and viola! Kent drove up from Chicago for AirVenture and perform on drums with fellow FMs at the Sunday night kick off - Flying Musicians Show Night.

AirVenture - Oshkosh, WI
Thanks to Mark Schneider's determination, FMs were able to kick off AirVenture in style with lots of friends and sponsors while enjoying some really good music by very talented members. This OSH was the busiest yet and included private parties where folks donated to the FMA and a very successful jam held Thursday evening by John Vining. FMA

FMA Solo recipient, Aaron Smokovitz from Michigan, was in attendance along with his family. Aaron performed the trumpet solo in La Virgen de la Macarena on Wednesday evening in the Theater in the Woods with the AirVenture Concert Band under the direction of Elton Eisele. Many FMs played in the band this year while more and more regulars are joining FMA. Our scholarship has really drawn quite a bit of interest and it's good to see things come together.

The Flying Musicians Show Night at the SOS Bros. Tent was a huge success. Thank you mark Schneider for establishing and coordinating this wonderful event to kick off Airventure. In the past corporate member Sky-Tec was always the opener with their Starterittaville party. Sky-Tec was sold to Hartzell Engine Technologies (new corporate member) so this event has taken up the slack real nicely. Members participating include: Mark Schneider, Kent Nicholson, Gary Filip, John Vining, Dave Fields, David Peel, Alex & Marti Whitmore, Martin Filiatrault, and John Dyer.

Lancaster Airport Community Days - Lancaster, PA
This event only rolls around every other year but has become like a NE homecoming. FMA has a presence on the ramp to raise awareness while playing a bit of music. Our vantage point can't get any better! We are able to see all that's happening on the flight line including the airshow. Members attending and supporting FMA are CMs Bristell & Sensenich Propellers,  Mid-Atlantic ambassador Jeff Auen and Claudius, Pete Stern & Riccardo, John & Sarah, Rich, Preston, and so many more. The hospitality is great and the food is outstanding.

FLIGHT SCHOOL
Quality Aviation Services
Now that we are in the third year of the FMA Solo Program, we are finding that flight schools as well as flight instructors are enthusiastically stepping up to support the recipients.

JT Rairigh, chief flight instructor and director, at Quality Aviation Services has been over the top with his support of both FMA and Aaron Smokovitz.

"We were so impressed by FMA's generosity that we decided to offer Aaron our own $1000 scholarship to help him get from solo to Private Pilot.  Plus, our local EAA chapter gives scholarships every year to young committed student pilots.  Aaron is very deserving, and hopefully will get help from our EAA chapter as well."

Quality Aviation Services, Inc. has been training pilots and providing aviation services since 2003.  However the aviation experience of our staff covers a combined total of more than 130 years.

JT Rairigh, our chief pilot and director, is a Single-engine and Multi-engine CFII, commercial helicopter pilot, A&P and IA (Aircraft Inspection Authorization).  Janine Rairigh, a pilot, and our scheduler and COO (Chief Office Officer) is ready to work out your flight schedule to meet your needs.

We believe flight instructors and flight schools must have a number of important qualities.  The most important of these is to CARE about the students.  Our flight school exists to help people become skillful pilots who will experience many years of safe and enjoyable flying.

If you think you might be interested in learning to fly, give us a call at 989-615-1103 to set up a Discovery Flight (an introductory, no-obligation flight lesson).
PRODUCT REVIEW
SONY Professional USA
FMA received a large donation from Sony Pro in 2014. The donation consisted of wireless microphones (DWZ-M50) and wireless instrument packs (DWZ-B30GB).

Review by Bradley Leighton:
The Sony ZRX-C30 has been my goto wireless system for the past two years.  The features and sound quality are comparable to units costing twice as much and the simple controls, rugged reliability and extended range make it a bargain at any price.  It has traveled on the road with me and has been subjected to the normal wear and tear that musicians put their equipment through and I've have never had a problem with it.  I use mine with a microphone, but you can use it with any electronic instrument.  I highly recommend the Sony for those who want a quality wireless system at a reasonable price.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Members have been demoing units to use, test and review. Sony Pro wireless mics and instrument packs were used at several events last year and at the U.S. Sport Aviation Expo in Sebring, Florida this January.
