Adapted from the blog, Good Time Stories
As we reflect upon the resurrection story and Easter message let us remember that we are “God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved” Colossians 3: 12-15. As such, we are called to “clothe ourselves with compassion.” Let the love of Christ illuminate the ways in which he pours out his compassion on others through you. This reflection reminded me of a story I recently read and wanted to share with you.
“I work in a bookstore. It’s a great job, most of the time and many of our customers are pretty neat people. Anyway, one day this little old lady comes up. She’s lovably kooky. She effuses how much she loves the store and how she wishes she could spend more time in it but her husband is waiting in the car. She piles a bunch of art supplies on the counter and then stops and tells me how my bangs are beautiful and remind her of the ocean.
Ok. I think to myself. Awesomely happy, little old ladies are my favorite kind of customer. They’re thrilled about everything and they’re comfortably bananas. I can have a good time with this one. So we chat and as we chat, this kid, who’s been up to my counter a few times to gather his school textbooks, comes up in line behind her. She turns around to him and out of nowhere, demands that he put his textbooks on the counter. He’s confused but she explains that she’s going to buy his textbooks.
He goes sheetrock white. He refuses and adamantly insists that she cannot do that. It’s like, $400 worth of textbooks. She, this tiny old woman, boldly takes them out of his hands, throws them on the counter, turns to me with an intense stare, and tells me to put them on her bill. The kid at this point is practically in tears. He’s confused and shocked and grateful. Then she turns to him and says ‘you need chocolate.’ She starts grabbing handfuls of chocolates and putting them in her pile. He keeps asking her ‘why are you doing this?’ She responds ‘Do you like Harry Potter?’ and throws a copy of the new Cursed Child on the pile too.
Finally, she’s done, and I ring her up for a crazy amount of money. She pays and asks me to please give the kid a few bags for his stuff. While I’m bagging up her merchandise, the kid hugs her. We’re both telling her how amazing she is and what an awesome thing she’s done. She turns to both of us and says probably one of the most profound, unscripted things I’ve ever had someone say: ‘It’s important to be kind. You can’t know all the times that you’ve hurt people in tiny, significant ways. It’s easy to be cruel without meaning to be. There’s nothing you can do about that. However, you can choose to be kind. Be kind.’
The kid thanks her again and leaves. I tell her again, how awesome she is. She’s staring out the door after him and says to me: ‘My son is a homeless meth addict. I don’t know what I did. I see that boy and I see the man my son could have been, if someone had chosen to be kind to him at just the right time.’
I’ve bagged up all her stuff and at this point am super awkward and feel like I should say something, but I don’t know what. Then she turns to me and says: ‘I wish I could have bangs like that, but my darn hair is just too curly,’ and leaves. And that is the story of the best customer I’ve ever had.
Be kind to somebody today. You never know how your actions may affect others around you, so “you might as well be kind.”
Happy Easter!
In Christ,
Cheri Gioe

Office of Child Protection Notice
Families, as previously announced, Mrs. Beverly Peterson, our Child Protection Site Coordinator, has been seriously ill and out of the office since November. Last week, Mrs. Peterson took a medical retirement as her illness has progressed. Presently she is in the hospital and hopes to return home shortly while she takes further treatments for her illness. Since Mrs. Peterson took sick, Mrs. Kate Byrne has been able to volunteer two days per week. Mrs. Byrne was trained by the diocese for this position and will maintain the Child Protection process until MBS has someone in place for the permanent position in early June.
If you are volunteering for the school in any capacity, volunteer parents are to come to Office Of Christian Formation on the school campus to receive a packet of information to meet the Diocese of Baton Rouge requirements for SCHOOL volunteers. If you are or were previously volunteering for MBS PARISH, the SCHOOL standards are different and volunteers MUST update their application and have a Fingerprint Background Check (done by the State Police) to volunteer in the school. We will be happy to assist you in this process.
Mrs. Byrne is only in the office part-time, so if you have questions, feel free to email her at
kbyrne@mbsbr.org
or call her Office of Child Protection phone line at
(225) 751-4076
. There is voicemail to leave a message in the event that she is not in the office.

Summer Bridge Workbooks - New for 2018-19 School Year
MBS has decided to implement a summer practice program that focuses on academics. After thoughtful discussions and careful review, Carson Dellosa’s Summer Bridge Activities Series has been chosen. This year MBS is requiring all students in Grades 1
st
– 7
th
to purchase and complete at least 40 of 60 lessons. Students will receive a test grade for completing the 40 lessons. Students completing all 60 lessons will receive two bonus points. Workbooks are due by August 10, 2018 for full credit. Students may turn workbooks in until August 15, 2018 for partial credit. Failure to purchase and complete 40 lessons and turn in the workbook will result in a zero.
Please
for the order form. Forms and payment are due April 20, 2018. MBS will purchase the books in bulk and send them home before the end of the year. When filling out the order form, remember that students should work in the grade level workbook they are being promoted from (i.e. 1st grader going to 2nd grade would work in a 1st grade workbook as the workbooks review the skills they learned the previous year.)

Accreditation Survey
It is time for MBS to begin the accreditation process again. As part of the self-study required for accreditation we must administer a survey to our stakeholders. Please visit the link below to take the Parents and Community Survey. Your input is crucial for us to conduct a successful self-study.

Time and Talent Information for 2018-19 School Year
As stated in the MBS Handbook, "
Our family commits to thirty hours of time and talent to be given to the school and/or church each year. (A year is from registration to re-registration.) Time and Talent hours are required and reviewed prior to re-registration each year. Hours must be completed in order to receive the in-parish tuition rate."
The 2018-19 pink Time & Talent card and guidelines will be going home on Tuesday, March 20. In some cases, parents prefer school correspondence be sent home with the oldest child, others prefer the youngest child. Because of the variations in preferences, we will send one card home with each child. The parents can decide which one to use to log their family's hours for the 2018-19 school year.

|
Volunteer Needed!
Do you need to earn two hours of volunteer time? Would you like to earn those hours in the comfort of your own home? We have just the project - untangling headphones and replacing the ear pads! Please contact Mrs Denton for more information or to sign up - first come! Only one volunteer needed!
Thanks in advance!

Habitat for Humanity
April 28
th
will be the MBS portion of the
Habitat for Humanity build
. This year MBS is covering the 2
nd
weekend, which is still in the framing stage, following wall erection and sheathing from the first weekend crew (St. Patrick and Alphonsus). To date, Barry has only
7
signed up from our entire parish. Certainly, we’re all getting older and slower which is all the more reason to have more help on-hand.
The location this year is
2018 North Acadian West
, which is very close to BR General hospital. The families Habitat chooses to work with are highly motivated, dedicated, and very deserving of a helping hand.
If you can spend some time Saturday, April 28
th
please contact Barry at the phone number below for further directions. This does not have to be an entire day commitment you your part.

Vacation Bible School
Important Announcement!
Because we did not have Vacation Bible School last year, we would like to offer it this year. However, the Diocese requires a specific number of adults to supervise the children in each program. As of now, we do not have enough ADULT volunteers to open VBS. We are urging volunteers to please come forward now. All adults must meet the Diocesan Child Protection requirements.
Mrs. Gioe has offered double time and talent hours for those who volunteer for VBS. If we have enough volunteers, our scheduled dates are June 25-29 from 8:00am to 12:00pm.
If you are interested in working with our young children this summer, please email Judy Carr at mbspsr@gmail.com.

.
Also, we are in need of one team leader right now. The responsibilities for the team leader primarily include:
• Organizing the day and time for getting your team together to cut grass and clean up grounds
• Getting drinks together for the team. The church will refund all expenses incurred.
• Letting Travis Fox know if any equipment is not working or any other problems occur.
