A Message From Mrs. Gioe
Last week I had the opportunity to be on retreat with the Principals of the Diocese of Baton Rouge for two days. The retreat focused on the writings of Pope Francis in his Exhortation “The Joy of the Gospel.” I’d like to share the “Aha’s” that I took with me from those two days. (Years ago while attending a workshop the presenter called the things that we learned from her presentation “Aha’s" and it stuck with me.
Aha #1 – As you read these Aha’s keep your children in mind.
Aha #2 – Pope Francis said that under his leadership he will not make any changes to Catholic doctrine. He will however, challenge us to look at the world and what it means to a Christian. His goal is to influence not only the way we think, but the way we act.
Aha #3 – Pope Francis calls us all to be missionary disciples. Often we think of missionaries as people who go far away to spread the Gospel, however, a true missionary, ministers to whomever is right in front of them through their words, deeds and actions.
Aha #4 – We are never finished becoming the person God calls us to be. (I found this one deeply profound, especially as it pertains to our students.)
Aha #5 – We must be ever mindful of our vocation in life. Our vocation is stronger than us; it is what God calls us to be. Through our vocations, Pope Francis challenges us to be poor and for the poor, be protectors of God’s handiwork, and be men and women of mercy, as mercy is the face of God. In other words, we must leave this world better than we found it.
Referencing Aha # 1, all of these aha’s are universally germane to all of mankind wherever they are on life’s journey. The call to action that the Pope suggest is as relevant to our students, your children, as it is to you and me. In closing, I will borrow the words of Pope Francis that he borrowed from St. Theresa of Calcutta, Let us all go forth as missionary disciples and “practice the little way of love.”
In Christ,
Cheri Gioe

Putting the “SOCIAL” back in Social Media
Twice a year The Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph publish a journal by the name of Imagine One. In the recent issue, tucked on the second to last page was an article on social media. Below are some of the Sisters’ very real, progressive thoughts and observations about social media.
“Social media offers wonderful opportunities for individuals to connect with and learn from one another. It allows people to reach their “dear” neighbor all over the world! However, social media is not without its shortfalls. When used haphazardly, thoughtless, rash, or impulsive comments or posts can have serious negative consequences. They can create hurt, anger, insult, tension, and disharmony in those who read them and can recklessly undermine our desire to create unity.” The Sisters offered the following suggestions for putting “Social” back into social media.
- Be diligent – Watch out for fake news and report fake stories. If you realize the story is untrue, move on. Resist the temptation to participate in half-truths and untruths.
- Share the love – Focus on what you love and support by following groups and people who support your values; spread positivity by posting things that are positive, kind and civil; and bring positive energy to others.
- Be present – Don’t forget to interact with others by making plans with friends such as going out to dinner; find ways to personally spread positivity in our school and church community; and don’t forget to take a break from social media to give yourself space with your own thoughts and feelings.
Keeping the words of The Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph in mind, let us apply these principals to the Pelican Talk and GroupMe groups that are available to Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic School families. Let us remember to use these communication tools to support and spread positivity, not create “hurt, anger, insult, tension and disharmony that undermines the unity” of our school.
What efforts will you make this week to put “social” back in social media?
Adapted from the Spring/Summer 2017 Vol 9, I No. 1 Imaging One Journal published by The Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph.

Tommy iis having extensive back surgery and will be down for at least a month. We would like to help Tommy and his family by providing meals while he is recovering.
I know that some of you are still dealing with your homes after the flood, but if you are able to help, the family would really appreciate it. There are three people to serve. Thank you!

2017-2018 Uniform Policy
Thank you to everyone who reached out to us with feedback regarding the 2017-2018 Uniform Policy. There were many constructive suggestions. The Uniform policy has been updated to reflect the suggestions:
1. In addition to the option of wearing a turtleneck when it is below 40 degrees, we have added the option of a long sleeved jersey knit shirt.
2. We have added brown as a belt option.
3. We have added small hoop earrings (1 cm or less in diameter.)
4. Girls in K-4 – The logo on the button down oxford is NOT required since it is being worn underneath the jumper.

Vacation Bible School Announcement
Dear MBS Parish Families,
After much consideration,
the decision has been made to cancel Vacation Bible School for 2017
.
The reasons for this cancellation are the construction that will be taking place this summer on the school campus, as well as the fact that many of our VBS Volunteer Staff and families are still in the process of rebuilding their homes from last year's flooding.
In preparation for VBS in 2018
, a committee will be formed to look at possible new formats that would enhance the VBS experience for our parish families.
If you have any questions, please contact the Office of Christian Formation at
751-5867
