A Message From Mrs. Gioe
A friend recently sent me a thought provoking video -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QmnJJGQ_gDw
. The video showed neighborhood children playing a rowdy game of basketball. At one point the ball rolls over to the house next door where a boy in a wheelchair lives. One of the children runs over to get the ball, sees the boy with the wheelchair, says "hello" and runs off. A day goes by, the doorbell rings at the home of the boy in the wheelchair, and when he opens the door a basketball is sitting on the porch. The boy picks it up, wheels over to the neighbor’s house and all of the neighborhood children are playing basketball in rolling chairs and they invite him to play. I cheered at the end and realized that empathy, shown by the neighborhood children to the boy in the wheelchair, is what I want for all children
Why is empathy important? According to the Harvard Graduate School of Education, empathy is at the heart of what it means to be human. It’s a foundation for acting ethically, for good relationships, for loving well, and for professional success. It is also the key to preventing bullying and many other forms of cruelty. Empathy begins with the capacity to take another perspective, to walk in another’s shoes. But it is not just to that capacity. Empathy includes people. It’s about compassion. There are several steps we can take as parents and educators to cultivate empathy.
- Empathize with children. Model empathy for others. Children learn empathy by watching those we notice and appreciate. On the positive side, they notice if we welcome a new family into our school or express concern about another child in our child’s class who is experiencing one challenge or another.
- Consider regularly engaging in community service or model other ways of contributing to a community. Express interest in those from various backgrounds facing many different types of challenges.
- Engage in self-care and self-reflection. Try to find time to regularly engage in an activity—whether it’s going for a walk, reading a book, meditating or praying—that can help us avoid being overwhelmed by stress.
- Make caring for others a priority and set high ethical expectations If children are to value others’ perspectives and show compassion for them
- Emphasize with your child the importance of really listening to others, especially those people who may seem unfamiliar whom they don’t immediately understand. Encourage children to consider the feelings of those who may be vulnerable, such as a child experiencing family trouble or an unpopular child.
Help children develop self-control and manage feelings effectively. Often when children don’t express empathy it’s not because they don’t have it. It’s because some feeling or image is blocking their empathy. Often the ability to care for others is overwhelmed, for example, by anger, shame, envy, or other negative feelings. Helping children manage these negative feelings as well as stereotypes and prejudices about others is often what “releases” their empathy.
In Christ,
Cheri Gioe

Baton Rouge Food Bank Collection
March 13-20
Feeding the hungry is one of the Corporal works of Mercy. Our 7th grade will sponsor the Lenten Food Drive to support the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank. The collection of Peanut Butter for the "A" classes and Jelly for the "B" classes starts Monday, March 13 and runs through Tuesday, March 20.
Today, our 7th graders visited and stocked shelves at the Food Bank as part of their annual Retreat. Food Bank Director, Mike Manning, opened up the facility to teach our students about their ministry site and used their help to sort and stock the shelves while they were there.
Please be generous with the PB&J Collection. The 7th graders will accept any non-expired food cans that families would like to contribute because the recent flooding has contributed to the need for additional food to feed the hungry in this region.

Vacation Bible School Announcement
Dear MBS Parish Families,
After much consideration,
the decision has been made to cancel Vacation Bible School for 2017
.
The reasons for this cancellation are the construction that will be taking place this summer on the school campus, as well as the fact that many of our VBS Volunteer Staff and families are still in the process of rebuilding their homes from last year's flooding.
In preparation for VBS in 2018
, a committee will be formed to look at possible new formats that would enhance the VBS experience for our parish families.
If you have any questions, please contact the Office of Christian Formation at
751-5867
