A Message from Mrs. Gioe
I recently read an article about Coach “O”. Shortly after reading that article, I saw a 20/20 special with a segment on Madonna. Both article and segment were informative and interesting and I found myself thinking, that Coach “O” and Madonna are a lot alike? The answer you ask, they both have courage, discipline and perseverance.
In the article about Coach “O” I learned that he has a history of being opinionated, aggressive, and violent. His behavior was so out of control that at one point he was arrested. In the article, he acknowledged his behavior and expressed thanksgiving that the charges were dropped. His choices were not without consequences. He and his wife divorced and he lost his coaching job and his career. He was at his lowest when he decided to turn his life around. Because of his arrest, no teams wanted to hire him. A friend allowed him to volunteer his time as college football coach. He proved himself an asset and one of the head coaches decided to take a chance on him as an assistant coach. Then a college coach offered him an assistant coach position at the college level. Little by little enjoying victories and overcoming defeats, he worked his way to where he is today – the head coach of LSU. Our beloved Tigers have had a rocky start but Coach “O” has definitely worked hard to get where he is - courage, discipline, and perseverance!
Shifting gears to Madonna. If you are a teen of the 80’s you know she was an independent thinker and did not care what people thought of her. Madonna’s mother died when she was a young girl. As she became famous, she was known for being edgy, outspoken, caustic, flamboyant, rebellious, and outrageous. She was so salacious that mothers did not want their children watching her MTV videos. Fast forward, one year she made a humanitarian trip to Malawi. While there she noticed the poverty and lack of resources especially food and education. In the 20/20 episode I watched, she speaks of visiting a filthy orphanage. It was during that visit that she realized her privilege and promised one of the children she would come back for her. Madonna did go back for that child and two others. She adopted and raised them. She has since adopted several more children and even built a children’s hospital in that small country which without her would not have one – courage, discipline, and perseverance!
Researchers who study personal success call the behavior both Coach “O” and Madonna exhibited GRIT. Grit is the ability for a person to work through challenges and failures only to find success on the other side. Research indicates that students who exhibit grit (courage, discipline and perseverance) have greater successes later in life.
Two very different people with two very different paths. Both had to learn discipline, both had to dig deep for courage and both had to persevere to get where they are today. Two individuals with grit!
In Christ,
Cheri Gioe

Honoring Our Lady of Fatima, “The Lady of the Rosary,” & Respect for Life in October
The Church sets aside the month of October to celebrate our
Blessed Lady
and her beautiful devotion, the
Rosary
. This year the Church is also celebrating the
100th Anniversary of Our Lady’s appearance in Fatima
, where she told the children she was
“the Lady of the Rosary.”
This year, our Living Rosary will honor this devotion.
Most Blessed Sacrament families are encouraged to pray the Rosary together not just in October but at all times during the year. Many families have a tradition of praying the Rosary in the car as they set out on a trip.
As a school community, we too will pray the Rosary. We invite our families to join us for our annual
Living Rosary
on
Thursday, October 5, 2017, at 8:15 am
in
MBS Church.
MBS is grateful to Mrs. Celeste Rabalais and our Seventh Graders for leading this beautiful prayer service for our school community.
The Church also dedicates the month of October to
Respect for Life
. As Catholics, we believe in the sacredness of
ALL LIFE
…from conception to natural death. Let us pray that everyone will come to support the dignity and sanctity of all human life.

Celebrating the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi
Thursday, October 12, 2017, MBS will celebrate the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, which is October 4th. We will take this opportunity to celebrate the importance of pets in the lives of our families. Love for our pets and the joy they bring means that children often share in the care of their pets as members of the family. Oftentimes Schools and Churches have special “pet blessings.” While it would be fun to bring our pets to school, it simply would not be practical, or safe, to celebrate Mass with the children and pets.
MBS wants to invite our families to celebrate the next best way…by asking them to submit a
framed photo
of their family pet for Father to bless during the Mass. FRAMED photos (no larger than 8 by 10 inches) should be sent to school by Tuesday, October 10th, to allow us to prepare for setting the photos up in a display at Mass on October 12th.
Please submit your photo in an
easel type photo frame so it may STAND in our photo display
. We do not want multiple photos of the same pet. To submit a family pet photo, please send it to school through your YOUNGEST child’s home room or send a different pet photo for other students.
All pictures must be clearly marked with the student’s name, grade and homeroom number
on the
back of the photo frame
so they may be safely returned to their rightful owners. Please use a small card or tape to place on the back of your pet’s photo.
Please call David Planche at 751-5867 if you have any questions.

Please note that if you have been deemed compliant with the Parish for scouts, sports (grades k-4), etc. you are
