Today, I parked my car and headed to the office. While walking, I noticed the flags flying half-staff. I am certain they were flying in honor Mrs. Barbara Bush. Things like this make MBS special. One of our MBS members, quietly and thoughtfully taught our students how to honor a special person is such a respectful, old-fashioned way, thereby sharing that tradition in hopes that they will continue to share it with others.
This week our country lost a great American upon the death of, First Lady, Barbara Bush. When I think of Mrs. Bush, I think of a woman who “had it all.” I see a woman of grace, integrity, elegance, courage, and strength. Like many, I associate Mrs. Bush with the beautiful white pearls she always wore. In fact, on my way to work this morning I noticed a billboard with a picture of a strand of pearls with the words, “Rest in peace, Mrs. Bush.”
American tradition calls for our months to be associated with gemstones. The pearl is associated with the month of June. Pearls are considered a lucky charm and are associated with affection, happiness, love, and generosity. The pearl is also associated with wealth, loyalty, faithfulness, and friendship. It is said to bring the wearer traits of modesty, chastity, and purity. (www.crystalbenefits.com)
Mrs. Bush was born on June 8 in 1925. The public and personal accounts of her life show her to be affectionate, happy, loving and a generous wife, mother and benefactor. She was also a loyal and faithful friend to her husband, President, George Bush. While successful, she was humble and modest and emulated a purity of intention.
What a great American. Let us keep Mrs. Bush and her family in our prayers and try to emulate, in our lives, the beautiful qualities that made her such a special woman, wife, mother and friend.
In Christ,
Cheri Gioe

Field Trip Reminder:
Parents,
Please remember that to participate in SCHOOL field trips, parents MUST have done Child Protection mandates for Schools which includes:
- a finger print background check done at the State Police
Parish mandates for child protection are different and if you went through the process for scouting, PARISH athletics, etc. this process does not meet what is legislated for Schools.
If you have been background checked and finger printed for MBS School, then you should meet the mandates required.
Please email the Office of Child Protection at
[email protected]
if you have questions.

Office of Child Protection Notice
Families, as previously announced, Mrs. Beverly Peterson, our Child Protection Site Coordinator, has been seriously ill and out of the office since November. Last week, Mrs. Peterson took a medical retirement as her illness has progressed. Presently she is in the hospital and hopes to return home shortly while she takes further treatments for her illness. Since Mrs. Peterson took sick, Mrs. Kate Byrne has been able to volunteer two days per week. Mrs. Byrne was trained by the diocese for this position and will maintain the Child Protection process until MBS has someone in place for the permanent position in early June.
If you are volunteering for the school in any capacity, volunteer parents are to come to Office Of Christian Formation on the school campus to receive a packet of information to meet the Diocese of Baton Rouge requirements for SCHOOL volunteers. If you are or were previously volunteering for MBS PARISH, the SCHOOL standards are different and volunteers MUST update their application and have a Fingerprint Background Check (done by the State Police) to volunteer in the school. We will be happy to assist you in this process.
Mrs. Byrne is only in the office part-time, so if you have questions, feel free to email her at
[email protected]
or call her Office of Child Protection phone line at
(225) 753-
5526
. There is voicemail to leave a message in the event that she is not in the office.

Summer Bridge Workbooks - New for 2018-19 School Year
MBS has decided to implement a summer practice program that focuses on academics. After thoughtful discussions and careful review, Carson Dellosa’s Summer Bridge Activities Series has been chosen. This year MBS is requiring all students in Grades 1
st
– 7
th
to purchase and complete at least 40 of 60 lessons. Students will receive a test grade for completing the 40 lessons. Students completing all 60 lessons will receive two bonus points. Workbooks are due by August 10, 2018 for full credit. Students may turn workbooks in until August 15, 2018 for partial credit. Failure to purchase and complete 40 lessons and turn in the workbook will result in a zero.
Please
for the order form.
Forms and payment are due April 20, 2018
. MBS will purchase the books in bulk and send them home before the end of the year. When filling out the order form, remember that students should work in the grade level workbook they are being promoted from (i.e. 1st grader going to 2nd grade would work in a 1st grade workbook as the workbooks review the skills they learned the previous year.)

If you can spend some time Saturday, April 28
