This morning, we recognized the 17 people who were recently killed in the Florida school shooting. Not to worry, we did not mention the shooting or deaths but rather honored their lives with a procession of white roses and prayers for peace, love and forgiveness.
Earlier this year, I wrote an article about generosity of spirit that included a quote from Mr. Rogers. How fitting that I use it again as this is the 50
th
anniversary of the first airing of Mr. Rogers and reminder of the good in the world. “When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, "Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” Let us remember always, that good conquers evil.
We have received many emails of concern since the shooting. Please be assured that school safety is a top priority. We will be organizing a task force of approximately 15 parents and teachers who have expressed interest in looking at our campus security. We will convene in the next few weeks. After meeting with the task force, with the assistance of the Baton Rouge Police Department we will be planning for and practicing an Active Shooter Drill. You will receive information about the drill and communication tips for how to talk with your children about it prior to the discussions we will have in class. You will also be notified of when the drill with take place and once the drill is completed.
In Christ,
Cheri Gioe

Lenten Reconciliation - Grades 3-5
I
n early March, Fr. Phil will be celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation with students in grades 3-5. Our religion teachers will be reviewing with the students how the Church celebrates this Sacrament.
In the past, we have invited priests in our diocese to assist with Reconciliation. Fr. Phil decided this year that he would spend the time offering Reconciliation to all of the students on his own. As such, over a series of several days, each section in grades 3-5 will have a designated time for private Reconciliation. Mr. Planche will oversee the children while they are waiting for their turn and will help them to decide at the final moment what they wish to talk to Fr. about.
It is a privilege to have this opportunity to celebrate with your children. Please me mindful that Reconciliation is also offered every Saturday before the 4:30pm Mass, beginning at 3:30pm.

From the Office of Child Protection:
Important Notification:
Our Child Protection site supervisor, Ms. Beverly Peterson, will be out of the office for an extended period of time for a series of medical treatments. We have a certified volunteer who met with the Diocese and will be available for a few hours each week. Processing time of child protection applications will be affected. As such, if you are planning to volunteer, please pick up your packet at least a month before your volunteer event will occur. Packets may be picked up in the Office of Christian Formation from 8:30-2:30 Monday-Thursday. Please pray for a quick recovery for Ms. Peterson. We thank you in advance for your patience.
Parents,
I
n order to volunteer at MBS School, the school child protection process must be completed. This includes four parts-a completed volunteer application, certificate of completion of online training, signatory page from the Code of Ethics, and a fingerprint background check.
Please note that if you have been deemed compliant with the Parish for scouts, sports (grades K-4), etc. you are
NOT
compliant with the school child protection process until you have completed the fingerprint background check. The fingerprint background check is an extra step required to volunteer in a school. The paperwork for the fingerprint background check is available through my office.
If you have any questions concerning your compliance, please contact Beverly Peterson at
[email protected]
or at
225-753-5526
. Thank you for your cooperation with this matter.
Parents, please do not go to the state police to be fingerprinted without the necessary paperwork to have the proper background check run.
Beverly Peterson

Vacation Bible School Needs Your Help!!
MBS Vacation Bible School is scheduled for the mornings of
June 25 to 29
and is in the planning stages. Before MBS can open registration and assure the parish that we meet Diocese of Baton Rouge Child Protection requirements and mandated supervision ratios,
MBS needs a group of ADULT volunteers (over 21 years of age)
. All adults must be background checked, trained, and accepted for MBS to begin the children’s registration process. Adults who are current in the Child Protection process do not need to go through the process again.
TEEN volunteers will also be needed
and additional information regarding teen help will be sent out later. Teens do not need to contact MBS at this time. Watch the Bulletin for information on Teen volunteering.
To sign up as a VBS ADULT helper...please call Judy Carr (in the evenings) at
(225) 335-6563
.
Come join us in this half-day of fun and faith for young children of our parish.

Suicide Awareness and Prevention Speaker
February 28 at St. Michael High School
St. Michael High School is excited to announce that we will be hosting a nationally recognized speaker on Suicide Awareness and Prevention. Kevin Hines is one of the few people ever to survive a suicide attempt by jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Kevin now travels the country and is an advocate for suicide awareness and prevention
.
We are excited to be hosting a middle school student and parent night in the St. Michael Gym at 6:30pm on Wednesday, February 28, 2018. All Diocesan middle school students and their parents/guardians are invited to attend this presentation.
Because of the nature of the presentation, middle school students must be accompanied by a parent/guardian. Parent resources will be provided to all those that attend and sign in and provide their email address. We look forward to seeing you there!
