A Message from Father Phil Spano
Dear Families, Staff, Teachers, Administrators and Fellow Priests,
I assume that most of you have a lot coming at you and that you don’t want any more coming at you. I’m sorry that I’m going to disappoint you. Even though I lack credibility in more than enough areas, and am a bundle of contradictions in many ways, it does fall upon me to speak to issues at MBS Church and School. I’ve had to do so at several other parishes with Catholic schools and it is prevalent at most churches. It is actually a Catholic parent issue regardless of school. One’s daughters and sons can be positively or negatively impacted depending. At your children’s baptisms you accepted the responsibility of training them “in the practice of faith”. You answered that you understood what you were undertaking (“we do”, you said). Just like parents pass on their biological DNA to offspring, God/the church family calls you to pass on spiritual, faithbased, religious “DNA” to children and youth in the developmental stages through parental word, example and practice. Being spiritual parents comes with the biological package from a faith perspective.
I don’t know where everybody is with regard to God, Church, faith, practice and family. We get it, we don’t get it. The rollercoaster has a lot of ups and downs, twists and turns. I’ve blown some promises. Maybe you have as well.
Regardless of our successes and failures, God’s mercy and graces still challenge us to stand up, to come to our senses, and to walk by faith. If you are doing so with your family by participating at weekend masses regularly, supporting your church family in different ways, and by proclaiming the gospel by your lives – good. If there is a “disconnect” somewhere in your family, faith, practice…please pay attention to it. Bring some consciousness to it. One of the scandals in various degrees in our churches are Catholic families providing a Catholic school education and formation for their children/youth and not backing that up with regular practice of the faith at home and in the church home. That disconnect, that inconsistency, regardless of the reasons, hurts children’ emotional and spiritual development. I ask you to please give some prayer and thought to my reflection here. I’m not trying to embarrass, judge, or condemn. The health of any institution can allow for some prophetic criticism for some greater good, hopefully. If your family is in the habit of occasional practice, I hope you can act your way back into regular stewardship of prayer, service and offering. If there is any pain, hurt, or misunderstanding driving any alienation from God and the Church, I hope you can trust to talk to me without fear or worry. I want to reiterate that our MBS weekly school mass does not replace or satisfy the Church family rule obliging us to pray as a family (community) once a week on Sundays (or Saturday vigil). Over the years, some children have said their parents told them this – not good. If anyone has good reason to miss, one is dispensed.
Anyway. Enough of me for now. Pleas know of my prayers, support, affection and appreciation for MBS Church and it ministerial outreach in our Catholic school and in so many other ministries. It has been a privilege and humbling to serve here as pastor the past six years and I am appreciative of the life, energy, and light here in the blessings and messiness of church and family.
In the church family it is not just about obligation and mere attendance at Mass, as important as that is. Active participation, discipleship, and living and sharing our faith together is the foundation of our practices. It is not just about another thing to do – it is about
WHO
we are.
God Bless,
Father Phil

Corpus Christi Celebration - September 28
For MBS School, the feast that is most closely aligned with our naming of Most Blessed Sacrament is the Feast of Corpus Christi, which occurs each year during our summer break. We have set aside the last Thursday of September each year as a transfer date upon which we will celebrate our Feast and spend some prayer time with the Blessed Sacrament.
This year, we will celebrate our
Feast Day Mass at 8:15 on Thursday, September 28
in MBS Church, and we want to invite our parents and family members to join us for this celebration. At the end of Mass, following Communion, we will offer a short time of prayer before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. During this time of quiet music and prayer, we invite our parents to come pray for their individual family needs, for the success of our year as a Catholic School, and for the needs of all Parish and School families.

n order to volunteer at MBS School, the school child protection process must be completed. This includes four parts-a completed volunteer application, certificate of completion of online training, signatory page from the Code of Ethics, and a fingerprint background check.
Please note that if you have been deemed compliant with the Parish for scouts, sports (grades k-4), etc. you are
NOT
compliant with the school child protection process until you have completed the fingerprint background check. The fingerprint background check is an extra step required to volunteer in a school. The paperwork for the fingerprint background check is available through my office.
If you have any questions concerning your compliance, please contact Beverly Peterson at
