Small Businesses Presented with a Wealth of Information on Export Compliance by Top Notch Panel
The San Diego CITD, in collaboration with the
Port of Los Angeles,
Port of San Diego,
U.S. Small Business Administration San Diego District Office,
U.S. Commercial Service,
San Diego & Imperial District Export Council, and the
World Trade Center San Diego, hosted the 3rd workshop in a series of workshops called Export University, geared toward helping companies optimize their export potential and grow globally. This session of the series was held on May 17th at the Mission Valley Campus of Point Loma Nazarene University and provided an overview of the legal, contractual, and regulatory aspects of trade.
After brief welcome remarks by San Diego CITD Director, Victor Castillo, and Norman Arikawa, Assistant Director of Trade Development with the Port of Los Angeles, the workshop began with a presentation by Susan Kohn Ross, a partner at law firm
Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp
, who provided an in-depth look at various legal and compliance issues that can come up when exporting and how businesses can protect themselves.

The Imperial County Transportation Commission and Imperial Valley Economic Development Corporation hosted the Imperial Valley General Assembly & Economic Summit May 17th-18th at the Imperial Palms Hotel in Holtville, Calfornia.
The Summit brings together local business representatives and Government officials from around the region to network with economic development agencies through informative sessions.
San Diego CITD Director, Victor Castillo, presented on the services and resources available through the CITD as part of a panel on International Trade and investment, which was moderated by Matt Anderson, San Diego Area Director for the U.S. Department of Commerce. Additional panelists for this session included David Harlow, Consultant representing the Imperial Valley Foreign Trade Zone, and Mike Jones who discussed the milestones from the Southern California Association of Governments Logistics Study.

As part of
National Small Business Week, the San Diego District Office of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) hosts an Awards Luncheon during which they recognize
16 award winning small businesses and small business champions. The event, which was held on May 4th at the San Diego Marriott, recognized these award winners for their contributions to the American economy.
Candidates for awards in a variety of categories are nominated by trade associations, chambers of commerce, lenders, and business assistance organizations. The San Diego CITD nominated client Neyenesch Printers, a local family-owned business started 118 years ago, which won for the category of Family Owned Business of the Year.
The San Diego CITD has assisted Neyenesch Printers with participating in trade missions and trade shows targeting the growing manufacturing sector in the Baja California, Mexico region.

MetroConnect, World Trade Center San Diego's flagship export assistance program, is now accepting applications for its 2017 cohort.
Made possible through a grant provided by
JPMorgan Chase & Co., small to mid-sized companies in San Diego can apply for a
$10,000 grant and programmatic services to assist with international expansion efforts.
Fifteen local companies will be selected. Apply now through June 30, 2017.

The San Diego CITD and DSN for Global Trade & Logistics will begin offering
American Production and Inventory Control Society ( APICS) Certified in Production and Inventory Management
(CPIM) certification courses at Southwestern College's Higher Education Center in Otay Mesa. APICS is a national industry-recognized association for supply management professionals. According to APICS's Operations Management Employment Outlook, professionals with the CPIM designation see a significantly improved hiring potential and an average 14% salary increase.
The next course in the series, "Master Planning of Reosurces", will begin on June 14th, 2017 and will run for 8 weeks from 6 PM - 9 PM on Wednesdays.
The CPIM program empowers professionals with the ability to understand and evaluate production and inventory activities within a company's global operations. To earn the CPIM designation, a professional must pass a series of five exams to demonstrate mastery of essential terminology, concepts, and strategies related to production and inventory management. The CITD/DSN will be offering the APICS courses designed to prepare professionals for each of the certification exams.

As part of a collaboration between the San Diego CITD, Deputy Sector Navigator for Global Trade & Logistics (DSNGTL), and the SB 1070 CTE Regional Pathways Program, a series of experiential learning activities related to Global Trade and Logistics were made available to student interns of the CITD. During the Spring and into the Summer/Fall semesters, the San Diego CITD will host seven interns from high schools, colleges and universities including High Tech High Chula Vista, Southwestern College, San Diego State University, and the University of California San Diego.
SB1070 CTE Regional Pathways Program Industry Connections Coordinator and CITD International Trade Specialist, Monica Rosas, helped to coordinate these students' participation in these activities, which included: an Aerospace and Aviation Forum organized by South County Economic Development Council to learn about Global Trade in the Aerospace and Aviation Industry in Southern California; Careers in Manufacturing Tour, an event organized by the East County Economic Development Council, which included two site visits to the Fox Factory and Computer Integrated Machining, Inc. manufacturing plants followed by an industry panel and opportunity to explore careers in manufacturing and global trade; a visit to a produce importer in Otay Mesa Andrew-Williamson to learn about their binational process and all the logistics involved in their day-to-day operation; and a presentation on Careers at Customs and Border Protection focused on the trade aspects of CBP and Homeland Security.
These activities allowed the student interns to experience first-hand the types of career opportunities available in the Global Trade & Logistics and Manufacturing sectors.

San Diego CITD and DSN for Global Trade and Logistics Offering Southwestern College Students Opportunity to Earn Industry-Recognized Certification
The certification will be free of charge to those students who are chosen. In order to apply students must meet specific guidelines.
All applications and supporting documents must be received no later than June 30, 2017.

Innovative Approaches to Enter Indian Markets
On July 7, Mentor on Road, an initiative led by Indian cluster development expert and certified management consultant, Jagat Shah, will be giving a presentation at the World Trade Center San Diego offices. San Diego SMEs are invited to attend an hour-long presentation on Indian market dynamics, prospective sectors for American exporters, Indian investment in the US and the current regulatory environment. Following the program there will be a Q&A session and networking opportunities.
The event is free and will take place from 2:00 - 4:00 PM on Friday, July 7, 2017 at our offices downtown.
