Weekly Programs - Camp Talk

Camp

Latinitas Media Arts Camp teaches girls how to infuse art in media production, technology and social media management.  Activities such making an art film, using photography to create optical

illusions, creating video montages and illustrating abstract feelings cultivate 21st century creativity.  This year, girls got on board the "Keep It Real" campaign that is demanding publishers to stop photo-shopping images of women in their magazines. The camp encourages girls to formulate their own opinions about the media and consider their culture in the process. Camper Sydney Harvey comments, "Social Media to me is a revolution of communication for the world!" To watch a video created by the girls for their campaign watch: Chica TV.

Board Spotlight - V Day Espaņol

"We really connect with Latinitas' mission to engage girls' self esteem early so later they will not settle for an abusive relationship of any kind." said V-Day en Espaņol Austin organizer Cynthia Trejo. V-Day is a global movement that works to raise funds and awareness to end of violence against women and young girls through annual benefit performances. V-Day Espaņol's translated adaptation of Eve Ensler's "The Vagina Monologues" raises money for local charities globally. Performed in over 26 countries in thousands of venues,"Los Monologos de la Vagina" is shifting hearts and minds as well as financially supporting groups like Latinitas. We are grateful for the V-Day en Espaņol Austin team and all they do to ensure healthy lives for girls.

Club Spotlight - Dell Social Media Camp

Dell

"If Facebook were a country, it would be the third largest country population-wise," learned our Latinitas at the Social Media Command Center at Dell Headquarters. Summer campers visited Dell to learn about social media and the various job opportunities that exist within the field. Presented by Dell's Latino employee resource group: Adelante girls observed the company's Social Media Command Center that monitors all social media channels in order to defend and promote businesses and brands. Girls were then matched with outstanding Dell Latinas for a mentor/mentee lunch.
Latinitas Superstars - Latinitas Blogs Go Viral

 LatinoMetro

"The contributions by Latinitas to Latinometro are invaluable because they provide a unique perspective to our blog on a wide array of issues that are important to young Latinas.  We wanted to make sure that their voices get heard," said Austin's new city blog: Latinometro editor Evelyn Castillo. This local magazine based out of Austin focuses on issues and events that are exclusive to the Latino community in the city. Latinometro is co-publishing blogs produced on Latinitas' own social media: MyLatinitas.com.

 Intern Spotlight - Cristal Cervantes
Cristal

Cristal Cervantes has been a vital part of Latinitas since she learned of the organization her sophomore year in college. As an advertising major at the University of Texas Austin, she was particularly interested in Latinitas as it focused on the empowerment of young Latinas through media and technology. "Raising awareness about the Latino community. We need to help people and let people know who we are as Latina women." she explains. Starting off as a PR intern for Latinitas, she now currently works as camp leader for summer teaching the girls about media, culture and technology. Her passion for Latinitas stems from her love for community service, "Growing up, I didn't have the resources that these girls do. I want to give them knowledge and advice. I want to be a positive reinforcement and a strong support system for these girls."

Volunteer Spotlight- Campers to Camp Leaders

Alex and Davina Reveles

Latinitas programs depend on the volunteers that give their time after school and during the summer. Alex and Davina Reveles are two of Latinitas' very own shining stars; once program attendees themselves, they are now returning as camp helpers.  Reminiscing on their camp experience in 2002, "We were in the MACC! We took a lot of pictures and we got really close to the girls. Now we can help." Alex&Davina

You attended camp at Latinitas as a girl. Now you are leading younger girls through some of the same activities you did. What does being a volunteer mean to you?

Alex: You can watch the kids do what you use to do in Latinitas. I can help these girls because I understand what they are going through. It feels great to be able to help.

Davina: Volunteering is really great. I love that I am able to help out the kids through my past experience at Latinitas. It feels kind of like a privilege. They're doing the same things we did.

What was the most valuable thing you learned at Latinitas?

Alex: Not everything is what it seems. We learned how the media changes so much of girls' bodies and faces using design software and put (these images) in magazines, but when you really see the actual person they look so different.

Davina: Learning about how magazines change the way people look. And how our perception of beauty is completely affected by that.

What is your fondest memory at Latinitas?

Alex: Hands on things like getting to dress up, making movies, taking pictures, going out, looking at stuff and meeting people.

Davina: All of the hands on stuff and the fact that we got to do everything ourselves. We were the ones in charge of what we wanted to do.

What's your favorite form of media?
Alex: Film
Davina: Film
