 | Board Spotlight - Teaching Latinas Assertiveness |
|
| |
"You are money and you don't even know it, " was the ubiquitous line from 90s indy flick, "Swingers," a phrase that resonates in Latinitas when describing our team of club leaders.
In some ways growing up with a forced modesty, many young Latinas have a hard time owning and communicating their strengths. In May, Latinitas staff, board members and volunteers met with Latinitas "graduating" class of club leaders for assertiveness training. Latinitas club leaders defined leaders they want to emulate, participated in mock interviews and broke out in a discussion groups to discuss the myth of the "B in the boardroom" and how women can navigate business, powerfully. Most of Latinitas club leaders are in college, carrying a full load, paying for their own education, working and interning at Latinitas, experiences that set these young women apart from a majority of those entering the workforce and Latinitas wants them to own that! |

| Latinitas Superstars - Planned Parenthood / Latinitas Unite |

|

In some ways, Latina sexual health is in crisis. Mis or lack of information is driving statistics such as those from The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy that report 52 percent of Latina teens get pregnant at least once before age 20 - nearly twice the national average. Aligning for a series of workshops for girls in sexual health, anatomy and wellness is Latinitas and Planned Parenthood this summer. Stay tuned for workshop dates on Latinitas' website.

| Volunteer Spotlight- Maureen Donnelly |

Maureen Donnelly, realtor and mother of Latinitas' COO Laura Donnelly Gonzalez
 | | Maureen with her grandson Lucas and husband Jerry |
has been donating time and dollars to Latinitas since its origin as far away as Sparta, NJ. She leads the fundraising campaign for Latinitas' college scholarship awarded annually in partnership with the Hispanic Scholarship Consortium.
You always support Latinitas campaigns? Besides the fact that your daughter is COO, what compels you to do so?
I have always tried to support what my children do or did. In this case -- what my daughter does is important, because, I believe the hand that rocks the cradle rules the the world --- and all the young girls/latino or not will most likely be rocking that cradle for the next generation.
You are leading Latinitas scholarship fundraising committee. What does this project mean to you?
The scholarship fund honors a friend of mine who has passed, someone who was at a disadvantage growing up because of language barrier and other problems. Yet, through his own doing Tony became a very successful business person and I know he would agree that focusing on education is the first step in the right direction.
You are not Latina, but have always been open to new and other cultures? Why do you think that is so?
It was the way I was raised and apparently I raised my children in the same way.
What is your favorite form of media and why?
My favorite form of media is probably the telephone, but, I do like the way email works and gets quick replies.
