Whether it's verbal, social, or physical, bullying is yet another obstacle in the way of our children's success. Stopbullying.gov has published research that suggests that Black and Hispanic youth who are bullied are more likely to suffer academically than their white peers.

LiveScience reports that an African-American student with a 3.5 GPA (out of a potential 4.0) in 9th grade who is bullied, loses, on average, 0.3 GPA points by 12th grade. For a white student with a 3.5 GPA, that same number is only 0.03 points - 10 times less severeIt could be that academically-talented Black and Hispanic youth are being bullied for not fitting into the stereotype of doing poorly in school.

Smart Music Entertainment has just finished recording the anti-bulling hip-hop anthem, "Laugh At My Pain." The song looks at bullying from the perspectives of the aggressor as well as the victim. It offers a 360 degree view of what our youth may be going through. Click here to listen to it on SoundCloud.

The statistics for cyber-bullying suggest that children are being given more access to the internet, and greater freedom to express themselves in any way that they choose without any parental supervision. Moreover, when they are being bullied online, most will never tell a parent that they are in danger.

We have to remain vigilant at all times to protect the safety of our children. Parents who aren't proactive in initiating conversations with their children about crucial topics like bullying aren't doing our youth any favors. Don't be silent and remain neutral on this topic.

South African social activist Desmond Tutu has said, "If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor. If an elephant has its foot on the tail of a mouse, and you say that you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality."

As always, we welcome your feedback.

Peace,
