Please join host Frankie Picasso on Thursday, June 11th at 1:00 pm EST for the  The Good Radio Network when she is joined by Doniece Sandoval, founder of Lava Mae, a unique non profit that is bringing cleanliness to the homeless of  San Francisco. . 

Homelessness had been on Doniece's radar for some time, She knew she wanted to address the issue but she wasn't sure how she could help them in a meaningful way, until one day, she crossed paths with a woman crying on the street, lamenting how 'she would never be clean again'.

If cleanliness is next to Godliness, then a SHOWER must be HEAVEN and no one knows this better than Doniece, who challenged herself to go a week without bathing in order to understand just how dirty, grimy and inhuman one feels without cleansing.

During her research, Doniece found
out that there were ONLY 16 shower facilities in the whole city of San Francisco for  the over 3500 homeless folks who live on San Francisco's streets.  SIXTEEN  facilities that have one or two stalls EACH!!!!

Driven by a fierce belief that everyone has a right to dignity, Doniece was compelled to start Lava Mae, which means "WASH ME" in Spanish. The ability to bathe, unlocks opportunity for those experiencing homelessness. Doniece believes that with  hygiene comes dignity; with dignity, opportunity. Everyone has the right to be clean and to go to the washroom.

Lava Mae stands on the principal that "Those experiencing homelessness can't access jobs and housing or maintain health and wellbeing if they can't get clean."  

  

LavaMae is a unique solution to a growing problem. Too often the homeless are shooed away from restaurants and gas stations, making water and hygiene a growing concern and need.

 When Doniece heard that the City of San Francisco was retiring their city buses, she knew that they would be perfect for her project.  

The buses cost $75,000 each, and her plan was in 3 years to operate 4 buses around the city.  

  

 Doniece was awarded $100,000 dollars in funding as a finalist in Google's 'Global Impact Challenge' and raised the rest of the money through an online funding site. 

 

The first bus has been a huge success and now they are raising money for the second one to take to the streets.
