President's Message

LEAVE IT BETTER THAN YOU FOUND IT

This mantra was engrained into my head while growing up through the Boy Scout program.  Anywhere we camped, met, or were simply present, our leaders were constantly challenging us to not only pick up after ourselves, but to actually IMPROVE UPON IT

Wherever we go, we leave our footprints - physically, emotionally, chemically, etc.  We cannot stop that.  However, we each have the ability to control what IMPACT our footprints leave behind even though we may never be known to those who follow.
  • What impact are we leaving with our Optimism?
  • As leaders, are we improving upon all situations with your committee, Club, Zone, District, Region, etc.?  Are we "cleaning up" all items of concern so the next people who visit this place find it refreshingly clean?
  • Are we looking for improvements that will enable momentum to continue from what is being done today?
  • Are we truly sharing our Optimism with every person we meet that they feel blessed by just being around us for a brief period of time - even if that is only long enough for us to share with them a smile and pleasant greeting?
As we wind down one Optimist year and begin another, let's do it with enthusiasm and spirit!  In the spring, I hope we have many Honor Clubs to celebrate their accomplishments of growing in Optimist Members, completing at least three community projects, paid off all invoices, and reported their efforts through the President's Pride report.

We should have over 60 new communities receiving the benefit of having the Optimist movement in their area - some for the first time and others rekindling that fire that they once enjoyed.

In summary, we should each be leaving a giant wake of Optimism behind us as we hike through the hills, valleys and mountains of life so that all who come after us may benefit by the lives we led in service to others.

Giving only THE BEST,

Ken Garner

A hashtag is a word or phrase preceded by the hash or pound sign (#) used on social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram.  A hashtag is used to classify or categorize the accompanying text.  Here's a short video about how to style hashtags in your Club's social media posts.  Make sure to include the hashtag #Optimist in all of your social media posts and also come up with a short and meaningful hashtag for your Club.

Optimist Junior Golf Celebrated 20 Years at PGA National Resort & Spa
This year was a special year celebrating 20 years at PGA National Resort & Spa and beginning a new three phase event to allow more golfers to advance to the Championships.

In July, 660 junior golfers competed with very impressive low scores in each age division and three hole-in-ones.  We had over 30 college coaches choose the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships to watch our golfers. Our golfers say this tournament is a lifetime experience. Experiences like these are priceless because golfers learn how other young men and women are not much different than themselves.

Stay tuned for the Optimist International Tournament of Champions held November 7-8, 2015 at PGA National Resort & Spa.  The Tournament of Champions is an invitational junior golf championship for previous participants of Optimist Junior Golf events and other top junior golfers.  This competition is of the highest caliber of golfers.

Thank you to the all the Optimist Members who help continue to grow the program and make these golfers experience for some once in a lifetime dreams.
