President's Message

Ron Huxley Cartoon
Numerous elements of human nature rear their head during this time of the year. Some of those are good, while others are bad. I often hear the words, "Why me?" Are you a President, Lieutenant Governor or Governor who felt someone's actions other than your own contributed to an unsuccessful year? Did you get stuck "holding the bag" so to speak? I find these are the words of Members who had good intentions at the start. They wanted to make everyone happy by improving the well-being of the Members in their Clubs, Zones or Districts. What they avoided and did not realize was they had to plan for the unexpected.

You can knuckle under grumbling all the way or you can use this last month of the Optimist year to show everyone what you are made of. It is time to push back. It's time to really prove your worth. If you simply throw in the towel, then that is how you will be remembered. I have pushed all year to convince the leadership of the organization that any losses regardless how small are not acceptable. We told you they would happen; we urged you to reach out and replace. Well my friends, it is time to make up those losses and find new vitality in the hearts of new Members.

Don't lose sight of the legacy that Optimism brings to a community and the kids we serve. I will fight to be an Optimist to the last breath as there is no greater good in this world than caring for the children we serve.

Yours in Optimism,

President Ron

Participate in the Community Project Awards and Win

There is still time to submit your Club's entry for the Best in Writing or Best in Film categories of the 2013-2014 Community Projects Awards.

In the Best Film category, Clubs are asked to showcase their project in a 10-minute video clip. The questions from the CPA Project Story need to be answered during the video and the entry must be submitted on CD. In the Best Writing in a CPA entry category, Clubs are asked to complete the Project Story and instead of printing it and their supporting documents, save them to a CD in .pdf format.

Clubs can submit as many entries as they like in either of the categories. However, each project may only be entered in one category. All entries must be submitted to Optimist International on a non-returnable CD in either .pdf or .wp4 format by December 15. Your Club could win $500 to help carry out your work in the community! Optimism in Las Vegas

The 96th International Convention was full of fun and fellowship! Susan Burbank, Lieutenant Governor of the Quebec South District shared her impressions of the event.

2014 Optimist Convention

When we meet, one thousand plus, our goals become so clear

To have some fun, to help the young, that's what we hold most dear

The speakers really motivate and the instructors show us how

We share ideas, bring home some notes, we're ready to start now

An amazing impact when more than 1000 optimist hearts collide

When all that enthusiasm is spread back home, we're in for quite a ride

So many kids could use a hand, we can help them, there's no doubt

Optimists with time to share, we get involved and we have clout!

Our future leaders will get the confidence and training that they need

Let them learn to write, to speak, to golf, all will grow, some learn to lead

The less fortunate, the troubled, and the sick will get our attention too

With our ideas and generous souls, we'll make their world brand new

All happens for a reason, we're all optimists because we have a part to play

As one year ends and another begins, let's get creative, let's have our say

Make children's lives exciting, may they grow, have fun, learn something new

With each special moment, one step at a time, we will make our Optimism come true!

Stay tuned to future editions of The Hotline for information on the 2015 International Convention in New Orleans!
