The American Public Works Association's (APWA) website is a comprehensive resource. In addition to all of the valuable educational opportunities, you will find the information you need through many different resources APWA has to offer.

In regards to leadership, APWA has published a two part guidance position statement. In this issue we are highlighting the Core Competences of a Public Works Leader.

5 Levels of Leadership by John C. Maxwell
Book Review by a TLP Cohort #4 Member

In reading this book I learned many key leadership lessons such as: Leadership is a process, not a position. Leadership is influence. A good leader needs to be likeable . Good leadership isn't about advancing yourself it's about advancing your team. And lastly, leaders become great not because of their power, but because of their ability to empower others.

The challenge of leadership is to create change and facilitate growth. Understanding leadership and knowing what level you are on with each person will determine how you lead them. I strongly recommend this book.
