ARTICLE OF THE MONTH: "50 Rules for Being a Great Leader"

Becoming a great leader isn't something that happens overnight, but it can be achieved through discipline, hard work and commitment to improvement through experience. Great leaders aren't born, as some people suggest; instead, they are shaped over time. And, while what makes a "great" leader in one application doesn't always apply to others, there are some general rules that all great leaders follow.

If becoming a great leader in your own business or organization is your goal, these 50 rules are a good place to start:

1. Listen to your team. Rule one. Always listen to what your team has to say, even if you don't like it.

2. Communicate as efficiently as possible. Make your expectations and feelings clear in the appropriate medium as often as possible.

Summer Leadership Reading List

With summer in full swing, it's time for some leisurely reading. For many, this means hitting the beach and getting immersed in the world of fiction. For others, it's an opportunity to step back, reflect on work and gain some insights on becoming a more effective leader.

With commencement of the T2 Center Transportation Leadership Program's  (TLP) new Cohort 5, the cohort's first assignment was to read a leadership-themed book and provide a review with or without a recommendation for future cohort members.

The following are the top three leadership books reviewed and recommended by the TLP Cohort 5 members:

NEW Supervisor's Signpost: "You're Also a Teacher"

In October of 2016, the T2 Center introduced a new series of informational briefs called   Supervisor's Signpost.  Public Works Foremen and Supervisors are critical to the success of each department, and the series provides concise tips for ways they can improve their day-to-day leadership skills.

In the latest issue of Supervisor's Signpost: "You're Also a Teacher," we offer tips and techniques on how to teach others to do a specific job or teach a new lesson in a manner that everyone will understand. As you are developing your front-line supervisors, this is a great resource on how to get started.
