Black Law Student Association at Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade

Hello Friends,

We are beginning 2017 with great enthusiasm and many exciting activities at Ave Maria School of Law.

This month kicked off our school's participation in events supporting the pro-life movement. We participated, as usual, in the national March for Life in Washington D.C. In addition, as we did last year, we held our own March for Life here in Naples.

I'm pleased to share that Ave Law has been chosen as part of Princeton's Best Law School list again for 2017. We've also been ranked as a Military Friendly ®  School for 2017 by Victory Media. This comes at a very important time for us, since our goal is to make Ave Law the best choice for Veterans.

Later this week on the heels of the presidential inauguration, we're delighted to welcome Dr. Charles Krauthammer as our Faith & Reason Signature Series speaker at the Naples Grande on February 4.

I look forward to spending time with all of you this year, and continue to wish each one of you and your families an abundance of blessings filled with happiness and good health.

God Bless,

Kevin Cieply
President and Dean

Ave Law Named  Princeton Review Best Law School
I'm pleased to share that Ave Law made the 2017 list of Best Law Schools by The Princeton Review. They surveyed more than 19,400 students at 172 law schools to determine the best career prospects, the best quality of life and more. Ave Law was noted for being one of the best law schools with the most conservative students.

Marching for Life
The March for Life annual events are symbolic of a fundamental part of our mission - the recognition of the inherent dignity of each person.

On Friday, January 20, students, faculty, staff and community members congregated on our Naples Vineyards cam pus to participate in the second annual March for Life Naples walk. We're thankful to all of those who came out in support of this important movement.

More than thirty Ave Maria School of Law students, alumni, staff and faculty traveled to Washington D.C.to participate in the March for Life, the largest pro-life event in the world held on Friday, January 27. The Ave Law group was led by Monsignor McGrath, Ave Law's Chaplain, along with Claire O'Keefe, Assistant Dean of Admissions, Professor Brian Scarnecchia and Associate Dean of Career Services and Alumni Affairs, Jennifer Lucas-Ross.

We invite you to watch our Ave Law group interview with EWTN, Global Catholic Network. Our group comes in at 1:38:40 -  EWTN March for Life

In conjunction with the March for Life, Ave Maria School of Law attended the Law of Life Summit, the annual pro-life action conference held in Washington, D.C., spearheaded by Royce Hood, an alumnus of the law school. Pro-life leaders from around the country came together on Thursday, January 26, 2017 at the Law of Life Summit with Ave Maria School of Law students, faculty, staff and alumni to create measurable and achievable objectives for defending the sanctity of human life.

SPOTLIGHT ON: Professors Maureen Milliron & Kirk Miller
Professor Maureen Milliron

Professor Kirk Miller

This month we're spotlighting two very dynamic professors who are also a team outside of work in marriage - Professor Maureen Milliron, Director of the Research, Writing & Advocacy Department and Professor Kirk Miller, Visiting Associate Professor of Law. Professors Milliron and Miller are exemplary of our school's mission and importance on community and family values.

What is the dynamic like working together for the same school?
It is great. We met in law school. We were study partners and, at points in our career, practiced law together. Having each other to bounce ideas off of, makes us better at what we do.

What are some of the attributes you like most about working at Ave Maria School of Law?
We really love the relationships we build with the students. It is so rewarding to watch the students progress while in law school. The relationships we build carry on past when the students leave the school.

We also love the family atmosphere. When our boys were young, they came to the campus every day and got to know the faculty and students.

Professor Milliron, in a few words, how would you choose to describe the importance of Research, Writing & Advocacy (RWA) for law students?
Well, I am biased, but I believe the RWA courses provide the students with fundamental skills they need for success in a legal setting. They are able to take what they learn and immediately apply it in practice. Our students illustrate this on a daily basis in practice where we regularly hear from the lawyers they work for about how impressive their work is/has been.

Professor Miller states that the RWA classes are the most important classes students take in law school. Professor Miller is always supporting me!

Outside of being professors, you have a special talent of performing together musically. Can you tell us a little more about this?
When we met, we quickly learned we both had a love for music. Professor Miller played guitar and wrote music and Professor Milliron studied voice and played the cello. We had a great group of friends that also shared this love and we formed a "garage band" called Still Thinking. Over the years, we have had a lot of fun playing music together. It is a great stress relief.

You are both very well-regarded among the students here at Ave. What would you say is the most rewarding aspect of teaching?
The most rewarding aspect of teaching is when a student sends an email, a note, or calls to tell you how they used something they learned from you and it really helped them in their practice.

Civil Depositions Taking Place at Ave Law
Led by Professor Maureen Milliron and in conjunction with Von Ahn Associates, a local court reporting company, Ave Law will host civil depositions at the law school in the administration building at 707 Vineyards Boulevard. These depositions are a part of a multi-party civil litigation case. The attorneys are allowing a few of our students to sit in on the depositions.

VITA Tax Clinic
VITA 2017 Volunteers
The IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program generally offers free tax help to people who make $50,000 or less and need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation to qualified individuals in local communities. They can inform taxpayers about special tax credits for which they may qualify such as Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, and Credit for the Elderly or the Disabled. VITA sites are generally located at community and neighborhood centers, libraries, schools, shopping malls, and other convenient locations. Most locations also offer free electronic filing.

For the 2017 Tax Season, our site will be an VITA-FRS site which allows individuals to file their returns individually with the assistance of the VITA volunteers. In the event that someone does not know how to file their own returns, the VITA volunteers will facilitate the process for the individual.  All VITA-FRS volunteers have a basic tax certification. Pro Bono hours are given to each VITA volunteer to compensate for their services.

This program will take place on our campus on Saturdays from 9 am - 2 pm in West Hall 104 & 105, 1065 Commons Circle on the following dates: 2/11, 3/4, 3/11, 3/18, 3/25, 4/1, 4/8, and 4/15.
