HUF Celebrates Our Nation's Independence and Newest Citizens
15 years ago, Rebeca and Jose moved to the United States of America from Colombia, to live their dreams and provide a better life for their three children.

With a decent job offer from a friend, they were on the right track. Unfortunately, their luck changed and they lost their employment and savings within three months. Despite being professionals in Colombia, with limited English and a small social network in the States, they found themselves cleaning houses, delivering newspapers at 4am and more to make ends meet.

In 2009, their daughter became a US citizen and signed a petition for her parents. After 5 years as Legal Permanent Residents (L.P.R.), Rebeca and Jose began their journey to becoming U.S. citizens. Within a few years, they learned English at a local library and attended Hispanic Unity of Florida's Pathways to Citizenship classes.

Today, they are American citizens and are very happy because they can elect their leaders and be part of the American Democratic process. Rebeca said: "Hispanic Unity made our dreams come true!"

They will be top of their class with their knowledge of the alphabet, numbers, colors and their ability to read and even write their names. And, they know how to socialize with other children, resolve conflict and take a time outs when they need it.

Reception Area Named After Montero Family
For more than 10 years, Hyram Montero's parents hosted more than 15 families through the Refugee
Resettlement program in Chicago, IL. His parents were in charge of finding the families- who stayed
for as long as three months- jobs and housing.

Hyram has embraced his parents' philosophy that "Anyone can succeed, they just need the tools and the opportunity. And your job on earth is to help at least one person - just one individual -and make sure she/he has the tools and the opportunity."

Hyram is a Board Member Emeritus of Hispanic Unity of Florida (HUF) and leads the Montero Law Center in Ft. Lauderdale. He's been involved with HUF since 2003 and Take Stock in Children for many years mentoring several students. Hyram also supports Light of the World Clinic, Henderson Behavioral Health and takes on pro bono legal cases when he's asked by HUF.
