Learn Disaster Survival Info From SurvivalCommonSense.com
 Update
February 9, 2011
Cyclone Yasi
Cyclone Yasi caused extensive damage and flooding as it crossed land.

Talk about storms!

It seems as if the only area not getting snow, ice and cold weather, or high winds and flood damage is Central Oregon! And we need the snow in the mountains!

The Midwest has been pummeled all winter, with the (hopefully) grand finale last Thursday in Chicago.

Then, Cyclone Yasi hit the coast of Australia, causing widespread wind damage and flooding.

Subsequently, we'll be focusing on urban survival this week with an emphasis on disaster preparedness.

  • Learn cyclone and tornado safety skills.
  • SurvivalCommonSense.com Radio: Listen to the Feb. 4 interview with Freeze Dry Guy JR as we discuss the Freeze Dry Guy company's charitable efforts.
  • How to shut off your utilities during an emergency.
  • Finding Water after Cyclone Yasi.
  • Worth Reading: Storage Food Cookbook.
  • Survival Food: Homemade Energy Bar Recipe.

SurvivalCommonSense.com Radio
The guest on last Friday's SurvivalCommonSense.com Radio on the Preparedness Radio Network was Freeze Dry Guy JR. He talked about the company's charitable programs, and how non-profits can apply for assistance.
Land navigation expert Blake Miller phoned in during a break from teaching a Search and Rescue map and compass class to answer some reader questions.

How to Shut off Utilities in an Emergency
tornado damage
Shutting off utilities may reduce damage.
During a forest fire, earthquake, tornado or similar disaster, you may be asked to shut off your gas, water and electricty to lessen the damage and danger to emergency responders.
Do you know how to close things down, and do you have the correct tools?
It may be too late when the water starts spurting out of a broken pipe under the kitchen sink!
And this is one of those skills you don't want to learn on the job!

Finding Water After Cyclone Yasi
swamp sceneWidespread devastation and flooding followed Cyclone Yasi. One of the ironies of floods, is that when the water is standing everywhere, it's hard to find any fit to drink!
But there are some desert survival skills for finding drinking water that can be adapted to a flood situation. The techniques may allow you to stay hydrated until the water goes down and help gets there!

Worth Reading: Stored Food Cookbook

jan's cookbook coverHealthy Harvest is a paid advertiser on SurvivalCommonSense.com, but my review of "Jan's Fabulous Food Storage Recipes" is strictly my opinion.

I got a copy of the cookbook and tried some of the recipes and found them to be tasty and easy to make, using only stored food supplies. Only after I was satisfied that the cookbook is a valuable survival tool did I write and publish a review.

Survival Food: Homemade Energy Bars
Boundary Waters waterfallHomemade survival foods can be healthy and relatively inexpensive to concoct, and allow you to make use of your stored food. And, let the kids get involved with actual cooking aspect, and they will be learning another survival skill!
These energy bars use whole grains, natural ingredients and taste good!

I don't claim to be a survival expert

But I am an experienced reporter, interviewer and writer, and I know many experts in their respective survival fields. I have the experience of decades of knocking around wilderness areas throughout the United States. I'm not a newcomer to this survival idea. (To learn more, click on bio)

The content of SurvivalCommon Sense.com is reader-driven. To provide the information and education you want, I need your continued feedback and interaction.
Toward that end, there is now a special email address (survivalcommonsense.com@gmail.com) for specific radio show questions.
I intend to always be learning more about wilderness and urban survival, and appreciate your input!
