The power of the “Ctrl” button
Looking to open up different categories of library resources within the same window (ex. Bibles and Commentaries)? Use the “ctrl” key as you select the additional resources and they will open up in multiple tabs within the same window.

F9 Button
Press the F9 button on your keyboard, and your Wordsearch program will access the “Book FastOpen window,” for quick searches for a library resource. Once the Open Book window appears, enter a title or partial title or author name and select from the candidates.

SEARCHING
Too many search results? The following search example will search the headings, chapter titles, and other large text in a resource. This not only reduces search results, but your results are better since you are not merely find passing references in a paragraph but instead are discovering whole sections, articles, and chapters on your search topic.

Example Search: Search > Basic Search > All Resources > heading:justification OR largetext:justification ( Click this link to run the search )

HOW TO STUDY THE BIBLE
OBSERVING THE TEXT

Slowing down to read and observe the Biblical text is critical for listening to Word of the Lord. I think sometimes we forget how precious and amazing it is to be holding in our hand God's breathed Word!

Most of you are familiar with the 5Ws & H (Who, what, where, when, why, & how). These are excellent questions to ask as you read. But there are other observations to make. Below is a suggested list. By the way, do not try to observe these all at once. Instead, make several passes through the text, focusing on one at a time, and be sure to take notes along the way. And most importantly, write down your unanswered questions, and do not attempt to research an answer at this point in the process. And make sure you enjoy this journey of discovery.

Stage 0 – Request in Prayer, Read & Write Down Questions
·     Do not stop and answer
·     Use later in your message

Stage 1 – Genre/Sub-Genre/Literature Type (Not an exhaustive list)
·     Historical Narrative – Chronology, People, Places, Events
·     Wisdom (Proverbs) – Parallelism, Principles, Practical Advice
·     Prophecy/Apocalypse – Symbols, Principles
·     Poetry (Psalms) – Parallelism, Imagery
·     Parables – Story with a key point
·     Epistles – Argument, Theology, Doctrine
·     Law/Procedural - Rules

Stage 2 – 5Ws & H
·     Who, What, Where, When, Why, How
·     People, Places, Events, Things
·     Follow the Pronouns

Stage 3 – Significant Markers
·     Contrasts (but)
·     Conjunctions (and)
·     Comparisons (like, as)
·     Conclusion/Result (Therefore)
·     Clock - Expressions of Time (when, then, next, after)
·     Conditional Sentences (If…then)
·     Purpose (so that)

Stage 4 – Creative Language / Figures of Speech
Bullinger, Ethelbert William. Figures of Speech Used in the Bible . London; New York: Eyre & Spottiswoode; E. & J. B. Young & Co., 1898.
·     Metaphor (A Declaration that one Thing is (or represents) another ; or, Comparison by Representation)
·     Simile (A Declaration that one Thing resembles another; or, Comparison by Resemblance)
·     Hyperbole (When more is said than is literally meant)

Stage 5 – Theological Observations / Doctrine
·     Bibliology / The Bible
·     Theology / God the Father
·     Christology / God the Son
·     Pneumatology / God the Spirit
·     Cosmology / Spiritual and Material World
·     Angelology / Angels
·     Demonology / Satan and Demons
·     Anthropology / Man
·     Hamartiology / Sin
·     Soteriology / Salvation
·     Israelology / Israel
·     Ecclesiology / The Church
·     Eschatology / Future

Stage 6 – Potential for Application
·     Think, Say, Do
·     Put off / Put On
Stage 7 – Other – Anything else that stand-out or appears significant

HOW TO PREACH
PREACHING OUTLINES

What is the best type of sermon outline for the audience? To answer this question, we must take into consideration the text being preached. For example, is it a Psalm, Narrative, Parable, Epistle, etc.. How many points will you be making from the text? How much time do you have to preach? Will you be printing out the outline, or will it be on an overhead projector? Do you want the central point in the beginning, middle, or the end? There are many other factors to consider.

However, regardless of the outline you choose, there are at least four key features that are essential for any sermon outline.

  • The sermon outline must follow the flow of the text
  • The sermon outline must reflect the major points of the text
  • The sermon outline is memorable
  • The sermon outline is clear and easy to follow along

As far as sermon outline formats there are several you can use.
Here are some popular outlining formats.

  • The "Fill in the Blank" outline
  • The "Question" outline where each point is a question
  • The "Summary" outline where each point summarizes a key portion of the text
  • The "Application" outline where each point principalizes the Biblical text to encourage application
  • The "Narrative" outline where the outline forms a basic story structure

DOCTRINE & THEOLOGY
In the previous newsletter , we introduced the 13 key theological themes of the Bible. Let’s take a closer look at the second theme:
Theology/ God the Father.

Studying the nature of God, His attributes, etc. can help us distinguish who God is from so-called other gods, but also, what is unique about Him. If you were to study other religions, it wouldn't be long before you discover how unique is our God of the Bible. For example, the God of Abraham in the Old Testament is a Triune God, whereas the god of Islam is not. The personal nature of God is a foreign concept in many other religions.

Below is a section from the table of contents of the Topical Analysis Bible (we reviewed in February's eNewsletter ) which devotes several sections to the Person of God, the Nature of God, and the Attributes of God. And don't forget you can learn even more in your systematic theologies!

Q&A
One customer emailed me and asked the following question:

Q: I heard that the Logos mobile app can scan a book with Bible verses and convert them to a passage list. Where is that feature?

A: Open the Logos Mobile App. At the bottom of the app, click the three horizontal lines (navigation menu). Locate "reference scanner" in the menu and tap it. Next, take a picture of the Bible verses. Then tap scan and let Logos convert to text.
