What role does prayer play in your Bible study process?

I am sure you recognize the need to ask God the Father to illuminate your mind to understand the Bible by the help of the Holy Spirit. This is the proper way to begin the Bible Study process. However, where do you go from here? I suggest that you begin by reading the Biblical text, but as you read, write down all the question that comes to mind . This important step of observation is a wonderful way to slow down and meditate on the Biblical Text. However, it is critical that you do not attempt to answer any of these questions. There will be a time later in the Bible study process to find the answers to these questions, but now it would be premature.

HOW TO PREACH

OUTLINING THE TEXT

Discovering the point of any passage is the goal of studying Scripture. However, this is not always an easy task. There are several popular methodologies to help us understand the author’s intended meaning. For example, some suggest grammatical diagrams . You might recall these from your earlier years in school. Another strategy is block diagramming . Unfortunately, these techniques require significant skill and time.

I would like to suggest an alternative. One that is far easier to learn, but still has the precision and accuracy. The following video will introduce to a method I have developed and been using for the last nine years.

In last month’s eNewsletter we introduced the 13 key theological themes of the Bible. Let’s take a closer look at the first theme: Bibliology / Bible.

Although many theological works start with God, I prefer to start with Scriptures since they are from God and reveal all we know about Him. However, this is in no way intended to diminish His greatness and Glory and preeminence in all things.

Bibliology helps us study the Scriptures themselves and to understand their nature and attributes. The Bible says quite a bit about itself. For example, Psalm 119, the longest chapter in the Bible is all about God’s Word. Now to study the subject can be challenging. There are numerous names for describing God’s word. In Psalm 119, God’s Word is described six different ways: "law of the LORD," "The testimony of the LORD," "precepts of the LORD," "commandment of the LORD," “fear of the Lord,” and "judgments of the LORD." Paul the Apostle called them Scriptures or “Word of the Lord.” Unfortunately, Logos does not have a single tag for every instance Scripture is referenced. However, you can right-click and choose the “preaching theme: Scripture” and this will help you find a significant number of instances. See the example below.

The next best place to go to learn more about the nature of the Scriptures is a Systematic Theology.

Remember, how you view Scripture, reflects your view of God, His authority, and your sanctification.

RECOMMENDED SOFTWARE

If you use a thesaurus on a regular basis or would use one if it were digital, then here is a wonderful tool to add to your collection.

Try out it online. The one feature I like a lot is the ability to look up a word and then filter by part of speech.

For example, I looked up all the words related to “run,” and then selected “nouns” to remove any “verbs” from the list. Powerful!
