Learning and Developmentthree
Shifting from Discretionary to Annuity-based Budget Funding

Last month we discussed why your organization should provide training for its employees and the value of training and development.

Our topic this month is funding learning and development. Against the backdrop of our knowledge and service based economy few leaders in the non-profit (NP) sector would disagree with the value of staff learning & development (L&D) opportunities as a basis of supporting mission success. The prevailing approach for L&D funding, however, works counter to this value proposition. Typically L&D budgets in small-mid size NPs are discretionary. It is usually one of the first line items to disappear in challenging economic times. The sector would benefit from shifting L&D budget funding from discretionary to an annuity-based approach.

Help us help Ernestine's Shelter for Women this holiday season

The 14 Days of Christmas

As you may know, the GAIN division of ASSOCIUM is celebrating our 20th anniversary helping the non-profit sector decrease their hard and soft costs, and increase their internal capacity! Some companies celebrate by hosting parties or receiving gifts. We would like to celebrate by Giving Gifts. We are hoping you would like to help us celebrate these last 20 years of successfully making a difference in communities across the country, by donating to the 14 Days of Christmas Campaign. We are organizing a Christmas gift drive for 14 women (and their children) who are currently staying at Ernestine's Shelter for Women and will have to stay over the Christmas season.

How you can help

Here is a Christmas Wish List for the 14 families staying at Ernestine's. We would like to start collecting right away, with just a little over a month away! We will house donations at our office, and will begin the process of tagging (your first name will be included or company) wrapping and bagging on Wednesday December 14th for delivery on Thursday December 15th, in time for Ernestine's Christmas party.

If you don't have (new and unwrapped) items to donate or time to shop, please consider a gift card...some of the moms have GCs on their wish list so that they might purchase gifts for their children themselves. If you don't have time for a gift card, just send us your donation and we'll purchase on your behalf - and send you the receipt! It would be our pleasure.

If you have something to donate please reply to this email or contact  Jenn Poirier , 416-867-9350 | 888-761-1164 |  extension 243
If you would like to be recognized in this section of our newsletter or website, please forward a short article to [email protected]. Your content can include an introduction to your organization to help generate awareness; it can give a history; highlight your mandate; or even give details of an event. It's your space. We would love to help promote your organization and its initiatives!
pharmacyAsk the Pharmacist: Medication Disposal
Where to Dispose of Medications, Sharps and Syringes

Medicines play an important role in treating many conditions and disease. However, they are often changed, discontinued or stopped for a variety of reasons. Many Canadian homes' medicine cabinets and drawers are filled with either expired drugs or unused medications.

Inappropriate disposal of unused medications increases the risk of adverse drug reactions, illicit or dangerous use, and potential environmental contamination.

Google Funding applications close November 26th, 2016

The Google.org Impact Challenge will provide $5 million in grant funding to Canadian nonprofit organizations that are using technology to tackle the world's biggest social challenges.

Five winners will each receive $750K in grant funding, and five additional finalists will receive a $250K grant. All ten organizations will also receive mentorship from Google and the LEAP Centre for Social Impact to help bring their idea to life.

This grant is open to all registered nonprofits and charities in Canada, and it does not need to be a brand new idea. In fact, organizations can apply with a project that is already a work in progress. To apply, or for more information, visit g.co/canadachallenge
