Another Dakota Days in the books. We extended the 90th year anniversary with a week filled with events. Students, faculty and staff participated in daily events, including making tie-dyes and buttons. To finish the week, the School of Education walked in the parade and tailgated with alumni before the game.

Elementary Education Students

Students planned the “Through My Eyes” art exhibition and silent auction  on October 12 and raised $920 for the VFW post 3061. Each of the 27 students created a piece of to be auctioned off.

Sports Facility Event Management Students

During November 9-11, students in KSM 450 are working with the South Dakota High School Activities Association (SDHSAA) to coordinate the 2017 South Dakota State football championships.

Alumni Spotlight
Lexy Zimmerman

Zimmerman presented alongside Dr. Jing Williams at the Systems of Change Conference in Rapid City, SD. They showed their research, "Learning About Wars Through Research-Based Service Learning Project".

Zimmerman graduated in 2017, and now teaches social studies at Viborg-Hurley High School.
Dustin Lenhof & Kevin Nielsen

Several of our alumni attended the 2017 Minnesota Education Association Conference in St. Paul, MN.

Picture left is 2006 elementary education graduate Dustin Lenhoff. He is currently teaching 3rd grade in St. Peter’s, MN. Pictured right, is 1984 graduate of our elementary education program Kevin Nielsen. He was a presenter at the conference.

Dean Easton-Brooks presents at CADREI

Dean Donald Easton-Brooks attended the Council of Academic Deans from Research Education Institutions (CADREI) in Savannah, GA. Dean Easton-Brooks presented with deans from University of Kansas and University of Missouri.  
New Position for Dr. Heather Bleecker

Dr. Bleecker, an adjunct instructor, accepted a position with the University of Michigan. She will be working as a Research Project Associate Manager in the Geometry, Reasoning and Instructional Practices (GRIP) lab .

She will be managing a newly funded National Science Foundation grant called Geometry for Teachers (GeT) Support. She will investigate the instructional improvement of GeT course. 
Dr. Kari Oyen Featured on Podcast


Dr. Kari Oyen discussed mental health issues in rural America and the role of school psychologists with John White in his Podcast "Rural Matters."

She is an assistant professor of School psychology at the University of South Dakota and president of the South Dakota Association of School Psychologists.

Dr. Kathleen Brown-Rice to Speak at Briar Cliff College

Kathleen Brown-Rice PhD. will be the keynote speaker at the 15th Annual March to Honor Lost Children . T he goal of the march is to raise awareness to Native American children who have been taken away from their families and home tribes.

Her research is dedicated to historical trauma, substance abuse, and mental health issues related to the Native American population.
Research Spotlight
Dr. Harry Freeman

Dr. Freeman published an article in  Social Development Journal .  He describes a new conceptual framework to predict romantic attachment and attachment insecurity.

This new framework may be useful for understanding development and social outcomes.

Dr. Gabrielle Strouse

Dr. Gabrielle Strouse published research in the Journal of Experimental Child Psychology this month. In her research, she discusses how children learn from both video and from face to face interactions. 

Her research suggests parent interaction during view helps toddlers learn through video.

Students in Dr. Karen Kindle’s Integrated Literacy class learned from Leslie Blauman , author of 8 books on writing instruction in the classroom. They were joined by current student teachers and faculty at Jolley Elementary.
