Speaker Biography: Gene Allen Smith
Gene Allen Smith is a professor of history and director of the Center for Texas Studies at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. The author of numerous books, he is the curator of History at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History. Smith has received research awards from TCU and Montana State University-Billings, as well as fellowships from the Henry E. Huntington Library, the Virginia Historical Society, the US Department of the Navy, the US Military Academy at West Point, and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Known as an outstanding speaker, he has received teaching awards from TCU and Montana State University Billings, and has given talks at the Smithsonian Institution; Thomas Jefferson's Monticello; the Historic New Orleans Collection; the Mus�e de la Civilisation, Qu�bec City, Canada; and at a host of universities in the United States and abroad.

During the War of 1812, black men accounted for between 15%-20% of enlisted men on all ships and all stations in the United States Navy. Historian Gene Allen Smith will talk about the experiences of African Americans during the War of 1812 and the choice of many faced between joining the U.S. Navy or the British.
