Legal challenge to City approval of Uptown Community Plan

Save Our Heritage Organisation (SOHO) has joined as a co-petitioner with Mission Hills Heritage (MHH), which has filed a legal challenge to the City of San Diego's approval of the Uptown Community Plan Update.

The Uptown area contains some of San Diego's most historic and appealing neighborhoods. Uptown's unique historic character; variety of shops, restaurants and bars; pedestrian scale and walkability; and mature landscaping are what attract so many residents, shoppers, and visitors to the area. This vibrant combination gives Uptown its special and decades-old sense of place. As we plan for growth, we must protect the buildings, landscapes, and public spaces that contribute significantly to San Diego's authenticity and cultural heritage, including, in this case, LGBTQ landmarks, master architect-designed homes, and legendary gardens.

Unlike the recently passed North Park and Golden Hill Community Plan Updates, the Uptown Plan lacks protection for historical resources and does not propose a timeline to implement the historical districts identified in the plan. This is unacceptable.

Some of the Uptown Plan's major deficiencies regarding residential and commercial historic resources include:
  • No timeline for the processing of the identified historic districts
  • No interim protections during/prior to the plan's implementation
  • No preservation incentives
  • No enforcement or penalties for unpermitted changes
  • No infill guidelines for the identified historic districts
We cannot allow one of the city's most intact and beloved historic areas to go unprotected. We need your help! Please DONATE NOW to SOHO's Uptown Community Plan Legal Defense Fund. Thank you.
