Abraham Heschel
Dear Friends,

A number of parishioners have asked if we could spend some time looking together at the life and work of Abraham Joshua Heschel, the Jewish theologian, activist, and spiritual writer, based on the research and writing I have done on him.

We are therefore planning an Adult Forum Series on the five Sundays of Lent (February 14 - March 13), entitled "A Life Compatible with God's Presence: The Life and Witness of Abraham Heschel." As reading for the series, copies of his essential writings, edited by his daughter Susannah Heschel, will be available for purchase.

Heschel is remarkable as someone who had a deep personal piety, from which he developed a strong social consciousness as well as a sophisticated theological insight. Born in Poland in the Hasidic tradition, he was educated in German philosophy before immigrating to the United States, where he taught mysticism and ethics at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York. His writing reflects all of these influences: it is at once edifying, challenging, motivating, and perplexing.

Over the five weeks, we will cover topics that will offer a broad engagement with his work, from spirituality to ecumenism to activism. The topics, week by week, will be:

1.     Wonder and Amazement
2.     Being Human
3.     The Prophetic Voice
4.     Piety and Prayer
5.     Christian, Jew, and Muslim

I invite you to join us each Sunday at 10:15 a.m. in the Pavilion. Heschel may be complex, but he is never dull!

Faithfully yours,
Fr. Joe
Casa San Miguel
In 2015 we received $23,572 ($18,717 from the parish, $3,000 from the diocese, and $1,855 from the burrito breakfast).  In 2015, we spent $18,565 to purchase food.  We also spent nearly $5,000 to perform some emergency plumbing work and to complete electrical refurbishments.  Anyone who owns an older home (and the oldest part of the pantry is over 100 years old) can appreciate that sometimes you have to make repairs.  We also spent money on miscellaneous maintenance and fundraiser expenses.
We want to acknowledge that out of the funds we received in 2015, all but $3,000 came, one way or another, from the parish.  This equates to 92% of Casa San Miguel's funds coming from St Michael and All Angel's congregation and we are incredibly grateful for all the support you have given us and we are so pleased to be able to represent this splendid congregation to our neighbors.
We also want to point out that, of the $23,571.91 we received in 2015, we spent $18,565.25 on food, so, about 79% of our income was spent on food to distribute, and that is as it should be.  We exist to provide food to the needy, not rebuild old homes.  And, we hope that our projects are behind us and we can look forward to 2016 as a year where we simply get food and give it out.

Good Friday Pilgrimage
This Good Friday we will be participating with other parishes in the diocese on a Pilgrimage Walk to Chimayo. St. Michael's will be the coordinating parish. We do not have details as yet. There will be two classes about preparing for a pilgrimage, taught by Fr. Daniel Gutierrez, here at St. Michael's. Times to be announced but they will be on Sundays.  We will need drivers, and volunteers to help with various aspects of preparation. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Kathryn in the office.  More information to come... stay tuned.
Breakfast at St. Martin's
This Sunday, February 7 th is time to sign up for our breakfast at St. Martin's on Sunday, February 14 th . The new kitchen has been completed and we can resume serving hot casseroles along with our offerings of fruit, juice, tortillas, cheese and hard boiled eggs (plus posole, of course). The sad news is that there are more hungry guests than ever, about 325, so we will need many, many casseroles, about 18 big ones. We will be gathering your delicious donations at 2PM on Saturday the 13t h in the east parking lot. Please sign up to bring food or serve!
Prayer Shawl Ministry
Calling all Knitters, Crocheters and anyone interested we will be meeting twice a month on the 2nd Thursday @ 4:00 PM and the 4th Tuesday @ 11:00 AM in the Parish Hall.  Our first gathering will be Thursday February 11th, 4:00 - 5:30, Parish Hall. Join us for a time to share while creating a gift of comfort with love and prayers for someone in need. All are welcome, hope to see you there.
Any questions please contact Pat Burke 505-294-6512 or Kathy Poorbaugh 505-362-2512
High Scorers
Who knows what St Michael's seniors might be celebrating at the next High Scorers pot luck lunch.  It will be perilously close to Valentine's Day.  Actually, it's on Thursday, 11th February.  As akways, we gather in the church hall at 12 noon.  All are welcome to this unfailingly pleasant social event.  If you haven't been, why not come this time and give it a try?
Financial Workshop
This year's Financial Workshop is scheduled for Saturday, February 6, at the Bosque Center. In response to requests from last year, the afternoon session at this workshop will be split into a session for vestries and a session for finance teams to accommodate the specific responsibilities of each of these groups. Because there will be important new information critical for congregations, Rectors and Vicars and their Vestries or Bishop's Committees should consider this meeting mandatory and to strongly recommend that Treasurers or Wardens from each congregation make arrangements to attend. This workshop is worth five (5 Clergy Continuing Education hours for 2016 for those who attend all the sessions. If you have any questions, please contact Canon Daniel Gutierrez or Lisa Katz-Ricker at Diocesan House.
United Thank Offering
Next Sunday, February 7 will be the official beginning of our 2016 United Thank Offering season and the distribution of the "little blue box". Everyone will find a box, folded and stuffed inside your service bulletin.  I am sure that some of you have already picked up your "little blue box" from the card rack in the back of the Narthex and have begun a family routine each day of discussing your blessings, and as a token of those blessings, dropping coins into your box.    United Thank Offering is entrusted by the Episcopal Church to promote thank offerings, to receive the offerings and to distribute the UTO monies through grants which will support missions and ministries throughout the Episcopal Church and in provinces of the Anglican Communion in the developing world.

In Loving Memory
Cecil B. Fish, wife of the late Rev. Charles E. Fish passed away Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at the age of 95. Cecil was blessed to live life to its fullest until she took a fall on her afternoon walk and was not able to survive her injuries.
Cecil was truly a woman of love, who generously gave of herself to all around her.  She loved people and treasured all her friends and family.   She was wise, kind and funny and will be greatly missed by all who loved her.
A celebration of Cecil's life will be held on Saturday, February 20, 2016 at 2:00 pm at St. Mark's.   In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to St. Mark's Episcopal Church or St. Martin's Hospitality Center.

  • Write the story of your first conscious moment of knowing you were in relationship with something larger than your own life.
  • Write the story of your relationship with God (not the church, not your education, not your youth group, but God.  Who was God for you as a child?  What has your image of God been at various times of your life?  How has life changed your understanding of God?
  • Draw what your relationship with God looks like now.
