Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember,

Reflection:

A few of you know this story better than I do. Quite a few years ago, a young Chinese couple showed up at Brookhaven United Methodist Church. In broken English, they informed those that met them at the door that they wanted to know about God. So the Optimist Sunday School class took them under their wing. They nurtured, loved and taught this young man and young pregnant woman.

In due time, the baby was born and new life was celebrated. The child was given an unusual name - a name that was obviously not Chinese, but one that we had not heard before. When asked about the name, the couple relayed this story. Many years before, they had known a woman by that name. She had tried to teach them about God, but they had been uninterested. It wasn't until they had landed in Atlanta, down and out and fallen on hard times, that they had remembered what she had told them and they had set out to learn more.

I imagine this woman will never know the influence she had on this family and may never know that there is, out in the world, a child named after her.

Prayer:

Oh Lord, we try so hard to spread your word and to make disciples. Sometimes we do not know if the work we do has yielded fruit. Guide us in our efforts and give us the peace to know that they are not in vain. Whether or not we actually see the fruits of our labors, help us trust in the seeds we have planted. Amen.
