Newsletter Header
CPI is a local-global Peacebuilding Initiative uniting our strengths along diverse pathways to realize a Culture of Peace for all. CPI highlights inter-generational and inter-cultural Peacebuilders who are revealing the emerging Culture of Peace.

Dear Culture of Peace Initiative (CPI) Participant and Supporters,

We are less than a month away from the celebrated International Day of Peace on September 21st, and there are thousands of organizations and millions of people in various stages of preparation. There are so many forms in which Peace Day is expressed, and each is important as a contribution toward our mutual, evolving, Culture of Peace. A few of the Peacebuilding pathways are expressed in this newsletter from the United Nations High Level Forum on the Culture of Peace, to the Neighborhood Parliament of Children, to leaving anonymous love letters.

Let us all open our imaginations to the unending possibilities to share our expression of Peace within ourselves and with each other. It ultimately is about shifting mindsets and behaviors, which can happen in a moment. What does your Pathways to Peace look like? Please walk it, please express it. Its time!

(Note: Previous Culture of Peace Initiative (CPI) newsletters can still be viewed on the blog on our website.)

GMCoPSpecial collaboration from Georgina Galanis (GMCoP)

The group, Global Movement for the Culture of Peace (GMCoP), has been diligently collaborating, planning and envisioning how in 2013 together we can expand channels of consciousness to create positive and impactful change, both individually and collectively.

The Forum will be convened by H.E. MR.VUK JEREMIĆ,Presidentof the 67th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in cooperation with Global Movement for the Culture of Peace.  It promises to be an enlivening and stimulating daylongevent, which will be held at United Nations-NYHeadquarters in the Trusteeship Council Chamber on Friday 6 September 2013 from 9:30a.m. to 6:00p.m.

At this year's HLF/CoP opening ceremony, UNGA President Jeremić and Deputy Secretary-General, Jan Eliasson will speak, along with a keynote speaker, special guest and foreign ministers.  The opening session will be followed by three panel discussions:

  1. "The role of interfaith cooperation in promoting a global Culture of Peace" in the morning,
  2. "The Culture of Peace as the agenda for a new global civilization: Where are we now?"
  3. "Strategies for advancing implementation of the UN Programme of Action on Culture of Peace: What we need." in the afternoon session.

Special focus of the High Level Forum will be on the implementation of the UN Programme of Action on Culture of Peace adopted by the UN General Assembly 13 September 1999. (A/RES/53/243).

N.B.: Security check-in opens at 9:00 am.  Photo ID is required.
Neighbourhood Parliaments of Children

Special collaboration from Edwin M John, Director, Neighbourhood Community Network (NCN)

Raising child peace activists through Neighbourhood Parliaments of Children.

During the session of the UN Commission on Women last March, in a mammoth gathering to mark International Women's Day at UN Headquarters, New York, a 13-year old visually impaired girl, got the floor and introduced herself: "I am Swarnalakshmi, the prime minster of the State Parliament of Children of Tamilnadu, India".

The movement of multi-tier federation of Neighbourhood Parliaments of Children (NPCs) that she represents promises to provide a massive network of child activists for peace. NCPs have been organized in thousands spreading over some 23 States of India and in some other countries.. www.childrenparliament.in;

NPCs are territorially organized forums in neighbourhoods of about thirty families/children. Each NCP has its own Child ministers for any concern of relevance like environment, human rights, justice, health, education, sports, cultural action etc. NPCs are federated at various levels of governance like village, sub-district, district, State etc., with child ministers at each of these levels.

"We build a culture of peace" says Muthu Selva Ganesh,18, a former State-level Child Prime minister, now promoting similar parliaments for youth. "We get children to work together, in inclusive forums irrespective of caste/race or creed, for common causes. Children who work together cannot grow up violent and divisive."

Tamilnadu-Pondicherry State Parliament of Children won the global UNICEF San Marino Alexander Bodini award in 2009 for the best child-led organization for child rights action.

"... With a child minister for peace in every child parliament, NPCs could offer the best child-led network for peace-action too..." says Lanita Charles of Neighbourhood Community Network that promotes children parliaments and a similar vision for a politics of peace.

PDP

Special collaboration from Lisa Parker, Peace Day Philly

Peace Day Philly is encouraging area educators to observe the IDP in their classrooms, in afterschool programs and libraries through diverse activities that can connect with their curriculum and class schedule anytime the week of 9/16.

In light of this year's theme, "Education for Peace," we have posted numerous links to Peace education curriculum and activities, as well as lists of Peace Day activities to download, on our website

We're encouraging peace art activities, too...  In terms of programs, we are offering a mindfulness training for inner city youth in collaboration with city entities and partnering on a "Peace Teach In" at Drexel University, one over 20 PDP 2013 activities.

On 9/21, people across the region will be encouraged to use their smart phones and cameras to "Focus On Peace" by capturing images of peace they see in the world around them. Selected images received by the initiative sponsor, American Society of Media Photographers, will be shown at future program about visual peacemaking. Click here to learn more.

Peace Day Philly asked people on Philadelphia streets what they would like to see happen on a day of peace...their responses coming next week in a "What will YOU Make Happen for Peace?" video!

in honoring IDOP 2013.

The Washington, D.C. global meditation celebration will be held at the U.S. Capitol on the West Lawn on September 12, 2013, commencing at 10:30 a.m. We invite you to join us on this day of action, consciousness, and commitment, by attending and spreading the word through your organization's communications and social media channels about this important event.

U.S. Ambassador John W. McDonald, originating founder of the U.N. International Day of Peace, will open the day's ceremonies. Via satellite, we will be joined by thousands across the world, in hundreds of locations -- to realize for ourselves, our countries, and our world - our unending connection. Love Letter Project...

Special message received on our facebook page from: Mary Colborn

"... Hi, we are working on a project called the Love Letter Project, which is inspired by Global Love Letters, a movement that encourages people to write an anonymous love letter and leave it in a random place for anyone to find.  We are working on a project where people write anonymous love letters during the week of September 15th with the biggest push on Saturday, the International Day of Peace. It seems like the perfect day and time to spread unity, peace and love..."

About the Culture of Peace Initiative and Pathways To Peace

The Culture of Peace Initiative (CPI) is a cooperative local-global Peacebuilding Initiative uniting the strengths of organizations, networks, projects and people to realize a Culture of Peace for the Common Good. The CPI also serves as a vehicle for bringing to light many previously unseen and unheard Peacebuilders working along diverse paths, who are embodying the emerging Culture of Peace within Humanity.  The annual highlight of the Culture of Peace Initiative is the International Day of Peace, which provides an opportunity for individuals, organizations and nations to work together, on a shared date, to create practical acts of Peace with a year- round impact.

This newsletter is offered by Pathways To Peace (PTP), International Secretariat of the Culture of Peace Initiative (CPI) which was inaugurated in 1984 and received a UN Peace Messenger award from the UN in 1987. CPI  is inter-generational, inter-cultural, and has Participants in all regions of the world. PTP has consultative status with the United Nations (ECOSOC), (DPI). PTP has worked with the UN to observe and promote the International Day of Peace since it's inception in 1981, and has nurtured this occasion from a single event of a few hundred people into an annual global observance that now reaches hundreds of millions of people.

PTP has created and maintained the dedicated websites for the International Day of Peace and the Culture of Peace Initiative, including event locators for all to use; we produce this newsletter and also provide daily updates on the International Day of Peace Facebook page; we held a successful campaign to have the International Day of Peace printed on calendars across the globe; and we are continually involved with communications and planning about this event both inside and beyond UN circles. To learn more about our programs, networks, campaigns and support materials please see our web sites or visit our Facebook page.
