A Note From Lucille Olson

Inch by Inch

Years ago there was a Sunday morning program called the "Hour of Power" which was broadcast from the Crystal Cathedral in California, and featured Dr. Robert Schuler with inspirational talks. One talk in particular inspired me. It was called, "Inch by Inch, Anything is a Cinch". Sometimes we can feel overwhelmed by a task that seems monumental. The only way to accomplish something large in life is to tackle it piece by piece.

I took Dr. Schuler's advice. I had wanted a college degree but I couldn't see how I could ever accomplish it because I was married with four lovely children to care for. I began working toward that degree by taking one class at a time. My mother volunteered to help with the children and the housework. I was able to take more classes each term as time went on. It took eight years to reach my goal.

Here are some other examples of the wisdom of Dr. Schuler's advice.  We can write a book by writing two or three pages a day. We can clean that garage by focusing on one little area each weekend. We can clean the house by doing a little each day instead of saving it all for our day off. One half hour of focused cleaning can produce amazing results!

We can enlarge our savings account with small incremental deposits each payday. Our saving will grow as we add to it and it begins to accumulate interest. Even putting our change in a jar on a regular basis can really add up.

Perhaps our health needs a little revitalizing. Taking a fifteen minute walk every day can help. Or we can commit to eliminating one food or treat that contributes to weight gain. One small action in the right direction will create results. Decide what you want to accomplish, and begin with small steps. Doing a little each day or each week toward a goal will get us where we want to be.

As Lao Tzu reminds us, "A journey of a thousand miles starts with the first step". Decide what you want to accomplish and begin with small steps in that direction. You will find that you are guided and supported in unexpected ways.
