Edna McLoyd (1932-2017)
Long-time Library Board Member

The Wiregrass community lost one of its long time library and education super-supporters recently with the passing of Edna McLoyd. Edna had a passion for libraries and reading that resulted in her being one of our longest serving Library Board Members. She was an integral part of the team that helped the transition to our brand new Library buildings. Read all about her extraordinary life and commitment to education and her community in this wonderful Dothan Eagle tribute.

The Merck Manual (Medicine)

DHCLS is very pleased to report that the Merck Manual, first published in 1899, is now a completely free medical resource available online. Choose either the "Consumer Version" which is designed for patients, caregivers, and parents in which the information provided is in laymen terms, or the "Professional Version" which is designed for the medical profession and provides more in-depth information.

Bookmobile Update
New Schedule/New 21 Day Loan Period
For 2017, our venerable hardworking Bookmobile will be running a newly revised route around Houston County. Please check the updated Bookmobile Schedule to find out when the Bookmobile will be in your area. Also, it will now run on a 21-day rotation, and checkout books and other items for the regular 21 day loan period, in line with all other DHCLS service points.

Do you know about Inter-Library Loan?

Is the book you want to read held in a public or academic library outside of Houston County? Have no fear. Our Downtown Library offers a service we call Inter-library Loan or ILL for short. If a book is held in another library anywhere in the United States, and that library is willing to lend it out for awhile, we'll facilitate the process for you. You will just need to fill out a form and pay a $5.00 fee to cover the cost of postage.

Learn more about this valuable service HERE.

7-Day Books - 2 renewals

To begin 2017, DHCLS has instituted a change to our lending policies for the new and popular 7-day book collection. As long as nobody has the title on hold, library card holders will now be able to renew their 7-day books up to two times just like any other books in our collection. We hope this makes reading those 800-page monsters a wee bit easier.
