LIBRARY NEWS - Oct 2016
What's happening at your public library?
You're never to old, too wacky, too wild,  to pick up a book and read to a child.

Ashford Branch Library Improvements/Update
If you use the Ashford Branch Library, you may notice that the aging building recently got some much-needed improvements this month in the form of some brand new doors and windows. These will certainly help to keep the books, computers, DVD's, staff, and visitors nice and dry during the inevitable periods of Wiregrass wet weather.  FYI, statistics for this last year show that for every hour Ashford Branch is open during the week to the public, there are about 30 items checked out total.  It's a hoppin' place!

DHCLS to the Rescue
Helping our neighbors.
This past month, our neighbors across the street at the Houston County Administration building experienced a serious leak which necessitated the closing of some of their departments. The County asked to use one of the library's meeting rooms to set up shop and process the day's tag renewals while they fixed the problem. We were more than happy to help. Just another example of how libraries help their communities day in day out.
Do you need your test proctored?

Another educational service that DHCLS offers the Wiregrass community is test proctoring by qualified staff. This service is fee-based and is available only at the Westgate Branch location.

Please call (334) 699-2950 or email proctor@dhcls.org to inquire about cost and availability.

Library Funding/Sustainability

The turn of the calendar for October means a new budget year for DHCLS. People ask us all the time, "How are the library's programs and services funded?"  Sometimes they are surprised to learn that we're not an official government agency. Instead, DHCLS is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that receives a combination of funding from several government sources: City of Dothan (64%), Houston County (26%), State of Alabama (8%), City of Ashford (2%).  For this next Fiscal Year cycle (Oct 2016-Sept 2017), Houston County funding has remained flat, but on the bright side, Alabama State Funding has increased from $0.78 to $0.88 per capita. Please let your State elected officials know how much you appreciate their library support.
