LES NEW PIC

DEAR READERS:
Went Wednesday evening to see FRANCESCA AMARI fill in for MICHAEL HOLMES with the trio at THE PURPLE ROOM and it was packed so I managed to get a seat at the bar next to PATRICK HENRY and had a nice conversation and a delicious burger, it was $14 but it came with enough shoestring fries for 4 people. Even I couldn't finish them. After there I stopped in at MELVYN'S because I knew DEANNE CONTES was there for her birthday and there she was right up in front of MIKAEL HEALEY on the keyboard. It too was packed and no place to sit but managed to find a spot to stand and unfortunately the drink service was really bad - it took 15 minutes to get a vodka tonic, which turned out to be a vodka and soda, from one of the two cocktail waitress who were overwhelmed. But I noticed a lot and I mean a lot of people seemed to have been "over served" but every time a waitress went by their trays had mostly tall glasses of ice water. Not sure what that was all about? Maybe people bring a flask or down a few cocktails at home first?  While I was there they had 3 different men up to sing - I didn't get their names, maybe a Tony, and an Anthony who sings at HOODOO on Friday & Saturdays, and I think ones name was Michael Angelo? They each sang about 8 songs in a row & I think they were sharing the same white sport coat to go with their black shirts & pants. Also up between singers for "Summer Wind" was PATRICK EVANS before going back to do the 11 PM weather on CBS 2. Next I went over to AZUL but it was empty, then over to THREE SIXTY NORTH and they were just closing up but I saw TONY (formerly from LEON'S, RAINBOW & DESERT PRINCESS) and offered WEDNESDAY NIGHT CABARET OPEN MIC there if we wanted so I talked to JOEL BAKER & I guess we'll start there after May 1st which would be May 7th. I will let you know if that is a go & what time etc. We'd be in the big dinning room and not the lounge, so we'll have the stage and the baby grand piano. Friday evening I went to THE TOLERANCE CENTER in Rancho Mirage to see TONIA BERN CAMPBELL. I had never been there and it was a very nice space with nice seating for 70 people. Joel Baker brought his keyboard and they had a follow spot and she did a great show and used a large screen to show some videos of her career and some with husband DONALD CAMPBELL. IRV RUBINSKY has been presenting cabaret artists there for a while, in fact I was sitting next to DAVID MCBRIDE who was there last month. They follow the show with a nice spread of cookies, crackers, cheeses, fresh fruit, and wine too! I am not sure who'll be next but I would certainly go again and it is a good deal for only $20.

WHAT HAPPENED AT AJ'S ON SATURDAY:
We had a huge turnout this week with an outstanding array of singers and a really lively audiences - especially in the bar area there were at least 25 people who were a bit loud but still listening via the speaker in there and cheered and applauded wildly after every singer which were quite a few so we did one song and came around two times including BETH FORMELOZA singing "Day In Day Out" & "That's All", then FERDIE FORMELOZA with "I've Got To Be Me" & "Softly", and RUSS ROOF sang "My Way" & "I Write The Song" then with wife WINETTE ROOF they did a duet "Sentimental Journey" followed by the birthday girl from Wednesday night, DEANNE CONTE who sang "Birth Of The Blues" then her daughter visiting from, I want to say Colorado, AMY SCHOENDALLER sang "My Funny Valentine" to her mom & later they did a beautiful duet with "When I Fall In Love", next it was LARRY HARRIS with "Mack The Knife" & "You, The Night, & The Music" and MARGE HARRIS with "Cabaret" & "The Easter Parade", we also had the wonderful DOUG GRAHAM who gave us "Almost Life Being In Love" & "To Excess" from Chess that got a standing ovation, and ALAN JON was there to sing "Who Can I Turn To" & "Never, Never, Never" and MAX MITCHELL gave us "If You Could See Her Through My Eyes" & "I Can't Get Started", ROSE KINGSLEY singing "Can't Help Loving That Man" & tells me she is going to be singing "An Evening of Broadway & Cabaret" every Tuesday from 6 to 8 PM starting April 29th at Sushi Kitto on Jefferson St. in Indio with BOB CORWIN on piano. She is supposed to email me a flier hopefully by next week. And next it was MARY MARCHESE who grew up in Seattle & was Joel's neighbor as a child, and has a great voice & sings there with a band, but tonight she did "Unforgettable" & "Route 66", we also had PHILLIP MOORE come in and sing "Deserado" & "They VEry Thought Of You" and we found out that Phillip is the new host & Karaoke Crooner for AJ'S Friday Night Karaoke from 8 till about 11 so come by & sing, have dinner & drinks or just listen to the singers, Phillip alone is worth the trip. Our next singers were among a party of 10 in the bar, JANET who sang "Big Spender" and actually pretty good, then ART who did "My Way" and was really good, & then CHARLIE who was also really good doing "Summer Wind" & last was RANDY who kept saying no but finally sang "Sweet Caroline" and man was he good (and cute too). Then we had our wonderful friend SHERYL PARIS of THE PARIS SISTERS who sang one of their number one hits "I Love How You Love Me", and last up we had TONY come in after work and sang "God Bless The Child", so all together we had 20 singers total. What a great night - full of energy and amazing talent too. And before I forget, next Saturday Joel is playing for the Gay Men's Chorus show so we have RON SNYDER coming from Los Angeles to sing and you know he's really good so come out and sing with us. And I got the Chicken Marsala to go and it is so incredible - you have to try it!!

See you next Saturday for Cabaret Open Mic - it really is like no other night of entertainment anywhere - and no cover too.

AJ'S NOTE: There is a HUGE parking lot just past the front lot on your left. Remember to make reservations and see you next time.

AND: THIS THURSDAY, APRIL 24TH THEY ARE PART OF
"DINING OUT FOR LIFE" - so go there for dinner & AJ'S will contribute 25% of your bill to DESERT AIDS PROJECT.

 HEY LOOK... NEW POSTCARDS

I can design some for you too!

SUNDAYS IN SUMMER CABARET SERIES
Last week we had the fabulous JORDAN MILLER who got TWO STANDING OVATIONS!!! Oh, and later I went to TONY ROMA'S with TRUDI, and they didn't see us but a few tables away were 3 people who were at Jordan's show & then another group was leaving & stopped to say hi to them & you should have heard the RAVES about his performance & about the SUNDAYS IN SUMMER SERIES so I had to go over and say hi and thanks and brought their friends some brochures. After all, it's about "word of mouth".

THIS WEEK WE HAVE:

Yes, it's The Desert Songbird and one
of your most popular entertainers doing
"FAR AWAY PLACES" with
PAUL CRACCHIOLO on the baby grand.
See you there!

RECIPE OF THE WEEK

EGG WHITE FRITTA
with Lox & Arugula
Great to serve Mom on Mother's Day

INGREDIENTS:
8 egg whites, at room temperature
1/2 cup whipping cream
6 ounces lox, chopped into 1/2-inch pieces
1 lemon, zested
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 packed cups (2 ounces) arugula
1 clove garlic, minced

DIRECTIONS:
Put an oven rack in the center of the oven. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

In a medium bowl, whisk the egg whites until fluffy, about 30 seconds. Add the cream, lox, lemon zest, salt, and pepper.

In a 10-inch, ovenproof, nonstick skillet, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the arugula and garlic. Cook, stirring frequently, until the arugula has wilted, about 1 minute. Pour the egg mixture into the pan and stir to combine the ingredients. Cook, without stirring for 4 minutes. Transfer the skillet to the oven and bake until set, about 10 to 12 minutes.

Slide the frittata onto a platter. Using a serrated knife, cut the frittata into wedges and serve warm or at room temperature.

ALEX VARDEN
SAYS....

GIVE TO LIFE...

The greatest gift that you can give to others is
the gift of unconditional love and acceptance.
- Brian Tracy
* * *
Nothing is more fulfilling than giving something meaningful
to life. Every day provides you with the opportunity to do so.

When all is said and done, what really matters is how much
you have chosen to matter. What really matters is the positive
difference you have made for those with whom you share this life.

Instead of looking to impress, look to improve. Instead of grabbing for all you can get, discover how much more you can enjoy your life by creating and giving.

The more you give, the better life gets for everyone. There is enormous value within you, and by giving of yourself you gain greater and greater benefit from it.

The reason it feels so good to give is because that's what you long to do. So, give your talent, give your love, give your attention, and sing all your worries and doubts away! :)

"My goodness, it is brilliant." - Koop Kooper, host, - "Cocktail Nation," Sydney, Australia

"Laura Ainsworth has not only met the incredible standard set by her debut recording but surpassed it..."  - Eric Harabadian, Jazz Inside

"Ainsworth segues in and out of moody ladies in love, like those in a Barbara Stanwyck film festival...Whether hilarious or heartfelt, Ainsworth packs a pistol & the goods & should make waves with this new release." - John Hoglund, Cabaret Scenes

"Reminiscent of those classic Verve, Capitol or Columbia albums of the 1950's, but equally, it is so vintage 2013, you just need to grab a copy and listen." - Richard Irvine, 87.7-FM

"Laura Ainsworth is an exceptional singer, full of grace and color in her interpretations. Her ability to express the elements of the most classic jazz is incomparable; she is able to subtly display sensuality, darkness, romanticism, naughtiness, and feeling. 'Necessary Evil' is a smart & brilliant contribution to the world jazz scene"  - Oscar Montagut, WorldMusicReport

"Delightful...Snazzy and jazzy...Charming and genuine... Recalls big band clubs in many a black-and-white film airing on TCM...Magically transporting to an era far gone..."
- Kevin Thomas, Dallas Voice

"As sweet-voiced as a meadowlark crossed with a hummingbird...The kind of gig Mae West would uncork champagne to and then sit back in brocade and rhinestones...
