WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK AT OSCAR'S:

Last week was not the turnout expect but with 6 singers plus WAYNE ABRAVANEL & I, those who stayed each got to do more songs with Wayne doing "The Lady Is A Tramp", "Blue Moon", "Don't Get Around Much Anymore" & "I've Got The World On A string" and I sang "Where Or When", "Love Me Or Leave Me", & "Old Friend", followed by LORETTA SIANI before going to an appointment, sang "Guilty", then BARBARA FRANTZ "Hallelujah, I Just Love Him So", ALAN JON did "Love Is A Many Splendored Thing", "Misty", & "Chances Are", followed by DOUG GRAHAM and "Till There Was You", "If Ever I Would Leave You", "Corner Of The Sky", & "Mi Mancherai", and VICKI KNIGHT with "Kratchma", "You Made Me Love You", & Rock-a-bye Your Baby", MARTY MANGUN doing "Route 66", "My romance" & "You Go To My Head", and BARRY MONEY singing "Hello In There", & "Fever". So not so many singers but we did have JOHN EDMONDS & CAROL with a few friends plus another 10 or so in the audience. Our Singers Only Raffle prize of a $25 gift certificate went Vicki. JOEL BAKER returns this week and should be there regularly every Wednesday for the time being. So come and make this the best night for live entertainment in Down Town Palm Springs!

We also want to encourage all of our singers to come out on Tuesdays and sing for OSCAR'S IDOL with a cash prize of $150. If you do, make sure you let all your friends know to come out too because the prize goes to the most audience applause. Last week's winner was VICKI KNIGHT.

EVERYONE IS CRAZY OVER THE FISH & CHIPS!

WHAT HAPPENED AT AJ'S LAST SATURDAY:

Another crazy busy night with our special guest pianist RICHARD BERENT and a really full house. I started off with "42nd Street" and then we had LORETTA SIANI with "Surrey With The Fringe On The Top", "I'll Get Along" and announce her new assignment as personal assistant to WILLIAM SHATNER who will be here for a while shooting "SENIOR MOMENT", a new feature film that may still be looking for extras (see the notice in this column), then we had GEORGE LEWIS and "Back To Sorento", & "Earthbound", BETH FORMELOZA sang "New York State Of Mind", & "Moonlight In Vermont", FERDIE FORMELOZA did "Who Can I Turn To", & "What Kind Of Fool Am I", RAFE CORRELL sang "Moon Light Serenade", LINDSAY OUELLETTE gave us "On the Street Where You Live", JEAN SORF doing "Fools Rush In", DOUG GRAHAM did "The Life That I Never Led", & "On The Wheels Of A Dream", BARBARA FRANTZ sang "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue", PAT MCCANN did "I Remember You", & "It's Magic", and SHARON SILL with "Be My Baby", 2 time OPEN CALL winner, GERALD COLUCCI came to sing "You, The Night, and The Music", LESLIE TINNARO gave us "There's Been A Change In Me", & "Over The Rainbow", VICKI KNIGHT did "Can't Help Loving That Man Of Mine", & "Will Meet Again Some Sunny Day", also there after a long absents was JAN ABRAMS with "Down Town", & "How About You", a new singer visiting from Chicago, JOHN CONCEPCION was there for dinner with friends and sang "Bring Him Home", DONNY TEETER did "My Ship", & "The Start of The Blues", and there was also MARIANNA who sang "The Coachman" in Russian no less, it wasn't familiar to Richard so it was a bit difficult but our wonderful singers and audience helped her along by clapping to the music and make her feel more comfortable. JOEL BAKER is back with us this Saturday and should be for the duration with the exception of a vacation later in Summer. So we hope to see you there....

RESERVATIONS DINNER ARE HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! DO NOT LEAVE IT ON THE ANSWERING MACHINE... BUT CALL 760-202-1111 DURING BUSINESS HOURS (best after 5 PM a few days before Saturday) AND SPEAKING TO A LIVE PERSON. BE SURE TO GET THEIR NAME TOO, JUST IN CASE.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK

GROUND BEEF STROGANOFF

INGREDIENTS:

2 tablespoons butter

1 package (8 oz) sliced baby portabella mushrooms

1 cup chopped onions

2 cloves garlic, finely chopped

1 lb lean (at least 80%) ground beef

1 can beef broth broth soup

1/4 cup red wine

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

3/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon pepper

1/4 cup all-purpose flour

1 cup sour cream
6 cups cooked egg noodles

Chopped Italian (flat-leaf) parsley, if desired

DIRECTIONS:

In 10-inch nonstick skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Cook mushrooms, onions and garlic in butter 5 to 7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until tender. Remove from skillet to small bowl; set aside.

Increase heat to medium-high. In same skillet, cook beef 5 to 7 minutes, stirring frequently, until no longer pink; drain. Stir in 1/2 of the beef broth, the Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper; add red wine, heat to boiling. Beat flour and remaining 1/2 beef broth with whisk until incorporated; stir into beef mixture. Add mushroom mixture; return to boiling, and stir constantly about 1 minute or until mixture thickens. Remove from heat; stir in sour cream.

Serve with cooked egg noodles. Garnish with parsley.
