DEAR READERS: BIG NEWS OVER AT CABARET SCENES MAGAZINE.... Well, the ON LINE SITE anyway. As many of you may know, I have been the columnist for the Palm Springs Area for hard copy of CABARET SCENES MAGAZINE that comes out every two months for about 4 years, taking over from JACK MOORE who did it for even longer. The next issue is September-October and you can get a complimentary copy at both of the Cabaret Open Mics at THREESIXTY NORTH, AJ'S ON THE GREEN and at the SUNDAYS IN SUMMER SERIES at ARTHUR NEWMAN THEATER, and around town where I drop them off like AZUL, THE PURPLE ROOM, TROPICALE, & VICKY'S OF SANTA FE - but they go very quickly. One of the 'issues' - (no pun intended) we columnists faced was the deadlines often are so far in advance that much of the up to the minute news is not included. Well that is going to change because the writers for each area covered in the magazine will soon have access to the WEB VERSION in which we will be able to make updates received by the 1st of the month for NEWS happening from the 1st through the 14th and by the 15th for NEWS happening from the 15th through the end of the month.
In addition that these updates, each columnist will have the opportunity to include our PICKS OF THE WEEK for our area where we can highlight a performer, upcoming performances, events, benefits, parties, CD's we've 'discovered', as well as reviews of ones from the previous update period. So where the hard copy is every two months (many of you remember when it was monthly), the On Line version will actually be twice per month.
In addition to NEWS & PICKS, we will very soon be able to add VIDEOS pertaining to our areas, and even conduct our own VIDEO INTERVIEWS of persons of interest and yes, VENUES too! Plus if you are performing in one of the other columnists areas, you can submit them to me and I will forward them on to the columnist for the area you will be.
And listen up VENUES & ARTISTS, the Editor-FRANK DAIN & Publisher-PETER LEAVY, will be announcing some really great rates for advertising in the On Line Site. What a great way to get coverage not just LOCALLY, but NATIONALLY, and INTERNATIONALLY.
More on all this soon. They hope to have the new layout for the On Line Site ready to launch on or about September 1st which primarily be the info you will find in the hard copy magazine, then updates On Line on the 15th, the 1st etc. etc. etc. Gee, I sound like the King And I.
So get that news to me at [email protected] for anything basically within a 1 hour drive from Palm Springs. Remember, the deadline of the next On Line column is September 15th for news before the end of September. HINT: Getting it in early will insure it gets in and make it much easier on all of the columnists.
APPLAUSE WEDNESDAYS LAST WEEK:
Once again we only had a few empty seats, and after our first round of 19 singers some of the audience left which is normal, but then all these new people came in to see us and they had to keep the kitchen open. It's all good! Our guest pianist for the night was TOMMY DODSON filling in for Joel Baker, who by the way is back this week, and joining us for the first time was ELIZABETH DREYFUSS who sang "Sister" & she got DERRIK LEWIS to play piano for her "Here's To Life", then we had DONNY TEETERS doing "Hold Me" & "Waltz For Debby", then we had LINDSAY OUELLETTE with "Smile" & he was s'marvelous singing "S'Wonderful". The very talented JEAN SORF did one of our favorites "You Go To My Head" and BRAD SEIPLE unwinding from the first week of school sang "On The Street Where You Live" & brought down the house with "Bring Him Home". BETH FORMELOZA did it again with a new song "Oh, Baby, Baby" the "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" then it was FERDIE FORMELOZA to sing "You're Still You" & "When Somebody Loves You". Speaking of Derrik Lewis, we got him up to sing a fabulous "Sunny Side Of The Street" followed by PAT MCCANN with "For All We Know", and MELBA MILLER returned once again, this time singing "It Never Entered My Mind". JACI DAVIS gave her party of friends and all of us a treat with "More Than You Know" & "My Funny Valentine", then it was MARGE HARRIS who had some really kind words to say about myself and the open mics and about how hard Tommy, Joel, Ron and all the pianists work for the singers, so thanks Marge, we appreciate you all too, then then she sang "Anything Goes" and LARRY HARRIS sang "That's Life" and together they did "Sentimental Journey". A new singer named IVY BERRYMAN dropped in to sing "Bill Baily" & "Crazy", hopefully she'll be back soon. The it was PHILLIP STEELE with "My Ship" & "Lost In The Sky", both done perfectly, and COURT GRAVES was great as always doing "Come Fly With Me" & "Orange Colored Sky", then still here from NYC, TONY BUCKLEY sang "Cabaret" & "You Make Me Feel So Young", ART, just Art, sang his signature "My Way" but with is own twist and JASON HULL gave us "It's Getting Better All The Time" & Carol King's "It's Too Late Baby". I want to thank Tommy for being there for us last week and say that he may have some upcoming gigs to announce soon, so we'll keep you posted. And we'll see you all this week to welcome back JOEL BAKER on the piano.
AND..... AJ'S IS BACK FROM VACATION SO WE'LL SEE YOU - AND JOEL BAKER THERE THIS SATURDAY.
PS: WE NEED MORE FACE BOOK LIKES ON THE THREESIXTY NORTH PAGE - PLEASE HELP US AND
HEY LOOK... IT'S ME, JOEL & SOME OF THE GANG ON EYE ON THE DESERT
WHAT HAPPENED AT AJ'S ON SATURDAY:
WE'RE BACK FROM VACATION AND WILL SEE YOU SATURDAY NIGHT WITH JOEL BAKER ON PIANO.
AJ'S NOTE: There is a HUGE parking lot just past the front lot on your left. Remember to make reservations and see you next time.
SUNDAYS IN SUMMER CABARET SERIES:
My gosh, last week, JULIANA HANSEN was so incredible and got the fastest and longest standing ovation to date. Great story, great songs, great voice, and gorgeous too.
This Sunday we have another don't miss show, and according to Joel Baker who is playing piano for them, if they are half as good as they were in rehearsals then we are all in for a real treat. There show is about the ups and downs of love and marriage - which is great because they really are married. Lots of songs from lots of Broadway shows, maybe even a few of the dozens they are done all over the country and London's West End. So please join us for RACHEL TYLER & MATTHEW TYLER in "FOR BETTER... OR WORSE!"

HOLLYWOOD SCREEN CLIP OF THE WEEK:
Last week's video of Ava Gardner's own voice as Julie in Showboat generated several emails from readers.
This week I have a stunning wide-screen print of Helen Lawson played by SUSAN HAYWARD in the film Valley Of The Dolls. Her voice was dubbed by MARGARET WHITING, but fans of V.O.T.D. - and admit it - who isn't, knows that JUDY GARLAND was originally cast in the role and had already recorded the playback track.
So here you have JUDY dubbing the voice for "I'll Plant My Own Tree"

This clip is super rare. DORIS & CARY GRANT visit a baseball game between the Yankees and the Angels to promote their new film "That Touch Of Mink" so it must be 1962.
I wonder if Doris still has that baseball signed by all the players and what would that be worth today?

I LOVE LUCY
EPISODE OF THE WEEK:
Fabulous 16 mm color home movies taken by Lucy & Desi's home and family life. Desi was obsest with his camera equipment, so much they worked it into an I LOVE LUCY storyline.

CLASSIC TV CLIP MOMENTS:
This is a short 90 second preview of the first LASSIE episode which aired in 1954. It starred TOMMY RETIG and was originally called "Jeff's Collie". In the first episode we learn how Lassie and Jeff meet. LASSIE ran on CBS with different casts from 1954 to 1971 with multiple Collie's as Lassie which was supposed to be a girl but the trainers always used male collies. Making him the first female impersonator on national tv, or was that MILTON BERLE?

ALEX VARDEN
THE WORLD YOU LIVE IT
"Let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier. " - Mother Teresa
* * *
There are many people in this world who would love to have what you have, to know what you know, and to live the way you live.
Don't let yourself become so accustomed to your many blessings that you discount them. There is enormous value in your life, and many great things you can do with it.
Real gratitude goes beyond just thinking thankful thoughts and saying thankful words. The power of gratitude comes when you make good and meaningful use of all those things for which you're thankful.
You have been entrusted with many gifts and talents of great value. Your task is to find joy and fulfillment in sharing them with others, and making them into even greater value.
Enjoy the good things that you have, and then go beyond the enjoyment. Expand, share, multiply and utilize them as best as you possibly can.
Let your achievements set the stage for new achievements. With thankful heart and loving actions, create an upward spiral that brings even greater value and joy to the world you live in. :)

BOOKS ON BROADWAY BY MEL ATKEY
|
"My goodness, it is brilliant." - Koop Kooper, host, - "Cocktail Nation," Sydney, Australia
"Laura Ainsworth has not only met the incredible standard set by her debut recording but surpassed it..." - Eric Harabadian, Jazz Inside
"Ainsworth segues in and out of moody ladies in love, like those in a Barbara Stanwyck film festival...Whether hilarious or heartfelt, Ainsworth packs a pistol & the goods & should make waves with this new release." - John Hoglund, Cabaret Scenes
"Reminiscent of those classic Verve, Capitol or Columbia albums of the 1950's, but equally, it is so vintage 2013, you just need to grab a copy and listen." - Richard Irvine, 87.7-FM
"Laura Ainsworth is an exceptional singer, full of grace and color in her interpretations. Her ability to express the elements of the most classic jazz is incomparable; she is able to subtly display sensuality, darkness, romanticism, naughtiness, and feeling. 'Necessary Evil' is a smart & brilliant contribution to the world jazz scene" - Oscar Montagut, WorldMusicReport
"Delightful...Snazzy and jazzy...Charming and genuine... Recalls big band clubs in many a black-and-white film airing on TCM...Magically transporting to an era far gone..." - Kevin Thomas, Dallas Voice
"As sweet-voiced as a meadowlark crossed with a hummingbird...The kind of gig Mae West would uncork champagne to and then sit back in brocade and rhinestones... - Mark S. Tucker, AcousticMusic.com
