DEAR READERS:
What a show JEANNE PAGE put on Sunday at Arthur Newman Theatre. She received a rousing standing ovation and people were telling me it was one of the best shows they've seen. Jeanne worked her acting skill to the limit on such songs as "Something Cool", "Miss Otis Regrets" and one of the best renditions of "My Funny Valentine" I've ever heard. But when it came to "Sweet Georgia Brown", "Hard Heated Hannah", "Down In New Orleans" and other uptempo numbers, she had everyone swinging their heads with the music and tapping their toes. Hopefully you were one of the lucky folks who came to see her.

This Sunday is a local singer named ROSE KINGSLEY who singing career had been taking leaps and bounds in just the last 6 months with gigs in Las Vegas, New York City, and several places right here in the Valley. Her new CD "This Is My Life" has been selling well and garnering fans from all directions. She will be doing her show called "An Afternoon With Rose" at 2 PM on Sunday with local pianist BOB CORWIN on the baby grand. Rose came by AJ's last Saturday and sang "Here's To Life" and "One For My Baby" and everyone was all praises and I am sure you will enjoy the show on Sunday.

WHAT HAPPENED AT APPLAUSE WEDNESDAYS:
The group from the LGBT Center were there last week with most leaving by 7 PM, and we held our starting time until it settled down, although there were a good number who stayed and told me later they were overwhelmed at the amazing talent and had no idea we existed even with all we do to get the word out. Anyway, we had stared with 2 songs and those who stayed did a 3rd later. JOEL BAKER started us off with "I Get A Kick Out Of You" and later "Puttin' On The Ritz" & "After You, Who?", I sang "I've Got You Under My Skin", and later "It's Delovely" and "Old Friend". ROSANNE HOPKINS came to sing and try out some material she may include in her October 25th show at 'the Newman', including "Le Roy Brown", "Mein Herr", "Losing My Mind" & "We've Only Just Begun". DOUG GRAHAM was fabulous as always doing his songs, "Wheels Of A Dream" & "What Do I Need With Love" and check out DOUG'S BOOT CAMP in this Newsletter for details on his Singers Workshop. RAFE CORRELL brought us some new medleys using "Day In Day Out" and "Day By Day", "My Heart Stood Still" and "I Didn't Know What Day It Was" and later "It's Impossible" in both English and Spanish. A brand new singer named PAUL KAY showed up out of no where with 2 friends and his binder full of sheet music and knocked it out of the park singing "A Foggy Day", "Moonlight Becomes You" and later "I Could Write A Book", all with the verses and let me tell you he is really good and lives in the desert so I hope he continues to come and sing both here and at AJ's. Next we had the return of BARRY MONEY who nailed his songs as well, doing "One For My Baby", "Mad World" and later "To Make You Feel My Love" & "Not While I'm Around". JASON HULL came in to sing "It's Too Late Baby", "Kiss You Goodnight" and later "It's Best To Leave While I'm In Love" which I think is one of his best new songs. We also had a couple of singers who only did one song, DON STEELE, who came last week did "All The Things You Are" and a wonderful woman named CHERYL who said she knows JEAN SORF and decided to come in and sing "It's A Sin To Tell A Lie" and I could tell by how she glowed with the applause that she'll be back too. Even with a late start we had some time at the end for Rosanne to try out her arrangement of "Pretty Women" with "Ladies Who Lunch" Sondheim medley.

HEADS UP: Because of a private party that has booked Threesixty North on July 22nd - or maybe it's the 29th, I forget, anyway we will not be having a show on that night and I will confirm which date it is next week. AND they are going to CLOSE the first 2 weeks of AUGUST only, so there will not be shows on August 5th and August 12th so please make a note of it - but I'll remind you too.

We hope you will be there this week, and remember the new Summer Hours: 6:30 to 9 PM.  Dinner reservations are always welcome.

WHAT HAPPENED AT AJ'S ON SATURDAY:
OMG! What a fabulous night once again last week with another full house. Plus it was like an invasion from the PS Follies with 3 former stars staring with MARCIA HARP with "What I Did For Love", "Birth Of The Blues" and later "The Best Thing You've Done", & "How Deep Is The Ocean". Then BOB REINHAGEN there with his wife and another couple for dinner, gave us "The Summer Wind", "PS, I Love You", and a medley sing-a-long with "Melancholy Baby", "It Had To Be You" & "Red, Red, Robin". Next we had a friend of mine from San Francisco named KATHY HOLLY who sang "La Vie En Rose', "They Say That Falling In Love Is Wonderful", a medley of "Those Were The Days" & "Hava Nagila" then "I'm Gonna Live Until I Die" dedicated to JULIE WILSON. Kathy produces several monthly shows in the Bay Area as well as hosts a popular open mic night.
Look, it's me and Kathy....

DAN WESTFALL was another Follies stars, doing "Chicago", "Sit Right Down And Write Myself A Letter", "My Way" & "Strangers In The Night". ROSE KINGSLEY whom I wrote about earlier, sang "Here's To Life" & "One For My Baby" and boy I have to say, it was the best. DEANNE CONTE with husband BILL (sorry I wrote Bob on FB), came for dinner and didn't expect to sing but was fabulous doing "If I Loved You" & "I Have Dreamed", we look forward to having you both back soon. We had MARGE HARRIS with us who sang "Cabaret", "Before The Parade Passes By" and LARRY HARRIS singing "If It Takes Forever" & "More" and together did "I'll Be Seeing You". And our final Follies star, VICKI KNIGHT brought down the house with her "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man", and also "Manana Is Good Enough For Me", and got the whole place going with "Kratchma". We hope to see you at this Saturday's show, maybe all 3 of our Follies stars will be there and if ROSANNE HOPKINS and TERRI OLSEN show up, we can have our very own Mini- Follies! See you then.

Also, because the RESTAURANT WEEK went so well with the 3 Course dinners, ART & JOHN have put together some Special 3 Course Options for just $29 in addition to their regular menu.

IMPORTANT NOTE: AJ's On The Green will be closed like last year, from AUGUST 3rd through SEPTEMBER 4th. So our last Cabaret On The Green will be on SATURDAY, AUGUST 1st and returning on SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER, SEPTEMBER 5th. But you can come over to 360 NORTH and sing with us there.

And don't forget to YELP US and tell your friends too that we have the best singers in town and we do it LIVE!

AJ'S NOTE: There is a HUGE parking lot just past the front lot on your left. Remember to make reservations and see you next time.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK

 SUMMER TIME BERRY BARS
While there still in season and cheap.

INGREDIENTS:

Bars
1 pouch Betty Crocker? sugar cookie mix
1 cup cold butter, cut into cubes
1 egg
1 pint blueberries
1 pint raspberries
1 cup blackberries
1/3 cup granulated sugar
1 tablespoon cornstarch

Icing
1 cup powdered sugar
2 to 3 tablespoons milk

DIRECTIONS:
Heat oven to 350?F. Line 9-inch square pan with cooking parchment paper.

In medium bowl, place cookie mix. Cut in butter with pastry blender or two knives until mixture is size of small peas. Add egg; mix until combined. Dough will be very crumbly. Press half of the mixture into pan.

In separate bowl, toss blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, granulated sugar and cornstarch. Spread on top of sugar cookie mixture. Crumble remaining dough on top of fruit mixture.

Bake 35 to 40 minutes or until topping is golden and fruit filling is bubbly. Cool completely, about 1 hour.

In small bowl, beat Icing ingredients with whisk, adding just enough milk to make a thick but pourable glaze. Drizzle over cooled bars. Let stand 20 minutes before cutting. Cut into 4 rows by 4 rows.

ALLOW IT ALL...

The most miserable people are those who think only of themselves.
Let go of self concerns, and let the unconditional happiness to flow forth.

The most desperate and unhappiest people are those who obsess over their problems and needs.
Step back, look at what you think you really need, and free yourself from the chains of desperation.

The rule of life is this: Whatever you chase, eludes you. Whatever you allow, gathers around you.

Allow your love to settle upon all that surrounds you. Allow your giving heart to express it in all you do.
Allow your dreams, interests and passions to make themselves known, sincerely, honestly and lovingly.

Allow, encourage and inspire the best in others, and discover how it brings out the very best in you.
Allow this moment, this day, this life you share with the world to be as beautiful as you know it can be. :)

FESTIVAL OF NEW AMERICAN MUSICALS
HAS A NEW YOUTUBE CHANNEL....

  • AUDITIONS
  • WORKSHOPS
  • SPECIAL NOTICES
  • ETC....
Whether you are a seasoned singer from professional to amateur, or a bare beginner, just like with a regular physical boot camp where all levels are welcome, with my upcoming intensive, you will improve your vocal endurance, breath consistency and agility and find your true voice, or greatly expand the voice you already have.

Students have experienced profound transformations from these workshops.

One student's (John F) review here: "Prior to working with Doug I studied with celebrated master teachers [names removed]. As well as having developed his own techniques, Doug uses many of the same techniques developed by these master teachers, so working with him has been a natural progression for me.
Without a doubt I've learned more from Doug than I did with my previous instructors. He is meticulous in his instruction, and at the same time very clear about the how and the why of his technique. My singing has improved at a rapid pace, and it's undoubtedly due to Doug's knowledge, patience, and dedication to teaching. I would advise anyone, at any level, to work with Doug!"

In these 3 week, once a week, 2 ? hour long sessions you will
- Work in-depth on powerful breathing techniques which will develop more consistency in your singing
- Strengthen the muscles that make your vocal cords work
- Enhance your resonation and tone
- Expand your range
- Learn proper vocal "positioning" when you sing
- Exponentially increase your breath control
And much more!

PERFORMERS NEEDED FOR
PALM SPRINGS PRIDE CABARET SHOW
GREETINGS FROM BELLA DA BALL:

Hope you are having a great year.  Hard to believe it is almost July.

The Greater Palm Springs Pride is only months away.  The Festival and the Parade will both be held downtown Palm Springs again this year.  And, the festival will be a FREE admission event again!

Touching base with you about your interest in performing at Greater Palm Springs Pride on the Cabaret Stage.  It will be located somewhere on or near Palm Canyon (layout plans still being finalized).

The Greater Palm Springs Pride dates are Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, November 6-7-8.

Festival hours tentatively will be Saturday, November 7,  11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday, November 8, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
