DEAR READERS: It's Monday night around 10 PM and I just got back from a lovely party. I normally wouldn't go out tonight since I am working on this newsletter most of the day & into the night but I got some done last night and today with only the blog to write. I just could not miss attending BILL & DEANNE CONTE'S 30th Anniversary Party at Indian Wells Resort Hotel that turned out to be a full sit down dinner and fabulous show with so many singers I am afraid to mention anyone for fear of leaving someone out but a few were: MICHAEL D'ANGELO who played MC - boy can he sing, STEVE DITULLIO, ANTHONY DIJERLANDO, LARRY CAPELOTO, DARCI DANIELS, CAROL MARTINEZ, LILI ROSE, ROSE KINGSLEY, LES MICHAELS, oh that's me, POUPEE, and RICHARD BONO - the master on the keyboard. The later two of course are there every Wednesday night performing and welcoming guest singers. It was like a who's who of desert singers - they could have charged a cover:) Thanks again Deanne & Bill and here's to many more anniversaries.
Another highlight for my week was attending "Broadway D'Lights" at Pearl McManus Theater with my 'date' JEAN SORF and a great cast including KEISHA D, CHARLES HERRERA, JEROME ELLIOTT, & CHARLIE CREASY on the baby grand. The event was to raise money for a scholarship for a high school student going of to study theater arts. I hope they will consider bringing it to the 2015 Sundays In Summer - hint, hint.
APPLAUSE WEDNESDAYS LAST WEEK:
Busy night last week with our singers: DONNY TEETERS "Waltz For Debbie", "What A Difference A Day Makes", & "Hold Me", LINDSAY OUELLETTE did "As Time Goes By", "The Street Where You Live", & "Cry Me A River", ART sang "For Once In My Life" & "My Way" (or as he calls it Claire's Way), RAFE CORRELL with "You're Getting To Be A Habit With Me", "How Do You Keep The Music Playing" & "Don't Worry About Me/All By My Self In The Morning", BRAD SEIPLE sang "When Sonny Gets Blue" & MICHAEL BUBLES "Lost", FERDIE FORMELOZA gave us "This Time We Almost Made It", "Fools Rush In" & "I Wish You Love", BETH FORMELOZA singing "The More I See You", "A Very Special Love", & "Lonely Tear Drops", NONI LAMBERTSON did "Hello Young Lovers", "I Don't Know Why I Just Do", & "More Than You Know", BILL ARANETTA was visiting from SF so he came in and sang "Some Enchanting Evening" & "I Can't Give You Anything "I'll Be Seeing You" (and thank you Bill for 'tagging' us on Facebook) next it was FRED MILLER singing "That Old Feeling", "I Can't Give You Anything But Love", JASON HULL with "There Will Be Sad Songs", "Don't Answer Me", & "I Will Always Be With You" (hope I got them right), next MARGE HARRIS sang "The Night They Invented Champagne", & "Before The Parade Passes By", LARRY HARRIS sang "Day By Day" & "Just One Of Those Things" and together they sang New York, New York. Celebrating a birthday was BEN and we had a really good turn out of non-singers too, at 9 PM I counted 53 people including our 13 singers, so that is pretty good. Weather is getting nice so the front doors to Palm Canyon Drive will be open more and that always means a lot of walk ins so reservations are recommended.
PS: WE NEED MORE FACE BOOK LIKES ON THE THREESIXTY NORTH PAGE - PLEASE HELP US AND
WHAT HAPPENED AT AJ'S ON SATURDAY:
Well we certainly have more singers this week than last week - and a lot of non-singers too, party because FRANK (Fred Miller's other half) had a birthday group of around 20 friends. That was the good news - the bad news was my sound system, you know the brand new one I bought and was using for only the 3rd time? Well the sound kept going out. It was still on just no sound, so I kept trying different cords, turning it on and off, everything but kick it. As the night went on I got it adjusted to where it sounded better, actually not bad, but I took it back to THE GUITAR CENTER on Sunday and they gave me a brand new complete system. I will get there earlier this Saturday so I can set up and do a better sound check. I would really like to set it up and leave it up because it is really a drag every week. Anyway, I missed writing down some of the earlier singers songs due to my distraction with the sound but we started off with RON COHN and "Bennies From Heaven" & "Cabaret", FRED MILLER with "Don't Blame Me" & "Embraceable You", ROSANNE HOPKINS didn't write in her songs but I can tell you see really commanded the room with her songs, RAFE CORRELL gave us "Sway" & "You've Changed", DEANNE CONTE sang "Can't Help Loving That Man Of Mine", "The Birth Of The Blues" & "If I Loved You", MARGE HARRIS did "Enjoy Yourself, It's Later Than You Think", "Stormy Weather" & "Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend", LARRY HARRIS gave us "Quando, Quando", "Till There Was You" & "I Could Write A Book". Visiting from LA was a fabulous new singer named LAURA PURCELL singing "Almost Like Being In Love", "Moon River" & "No More Blues" - she said she had a great time and wants to come back again soon. Next it was newcomer KEITH KENDRICK singing "I Left My Heart In San Francisco", ART 'long time no see' HEALEY singing "Corner Of The Sky", "Bring Him Home", & "This Is The Moment" which want people on their feet, another newcomer ROB HEGEL sang and played guitar with his funny original "I Want you Completely Nude" & "Just When I Needed You Most" & Joel played for him doing "Over The Rainbow", newcomer JOE CARMO from Brazil gave us appropriately "The Girl From Ipanema", and TONY sang "My Funny Valentine". Like I mentioned before, I may have gotten some of the songs mixed up and I am really sorry ROSANNE for totally missing your song titles. Next time I promise to do better.
AJ'S NOTE: There is a HUGE parking lot just past the front lot on your left. Remember to make reservations and see you next time.
ON ANOTHER MATTER....
Many of you know that JOEL BAKER has scored a great gig on Thursday nights for the season over at WALLY'S DESERT TURTLE - I think starting this week, now that he's back at COD and with gigs every night of the week, he has been wanting to take off Saturday nights for some time and now 6 nights a week is too much. We tried to switch nights at AJ's to another night but that didn't work out. So..... rather than give up Saturday nights and leave all the singers with no cabaret open mic, it just seemed better to find another equally talented pianist to take over. One who knows just and can play just about any song, in any key, tempo, style, read music, knows all the singers in town, and so on and so forth. Well that isn't an easy task for a Saturday night but we are extremely lucky to have secured one of the best pianists and musical directors in the desert or anywhere for that matter. He has played at many piano bars in the valley up until he became so in demand, but he is looking forward to playing for all of us singers and I know you will be really pleased - when you find out who it is. I know you are dying to know who it is and he will begin on November 1st. Until then, keep watching this newsletter and blog for the big announcement. Maybe on Wednesday when I send out my "This Week's Shows" email blast, I will drop a few hints and if Joel is starting on Thursday, maybe some of you will join me over at Wally's to cheer him on. It is not open mic but we get to hear him sing all of your favorites - but only the clean one's:)

ALEX VARDEN
LIVE TRUE....
"Upon my word, I think the truth is the hardest missile one can be pelted with." - George Eliot, Middlemarch * * * The way to care is not to blame others for failing to care. The way to truly care is to show others how much you care. The way to communicate a truth is not to insist on it, but to live it. The way to convince is not to argue or fight, but to understand. Helping others does not mean making them indebted to you. To give is not to boost your ego, but to express the beauty of being alive. To truly enjoy life, instead of expecting joy to come to you, let it flow out from your heart and soul in any situation. Instead of denying, hiding or fighting against the truth, embrace it. Accept what it is, and put the power of truth on your side. Though the universe is complex, life at its heart, is not that complicated. Live true to who you are, and though it won't always be easy, you'll live rich and well. :)

BOOKS ON BROADWAY BY MEL ATKEY
|
"My goodness, it is brilliant." - Koop Kooper, host, - "Cocktail Nation," Sydney, Australia
"Laura Ainsworth has not only met the incredible standard set by her debut recording but surpassed it..." - Eric Harabadian, Jazz Inside
"Ainsworth segues in and out of moody ladies in love, like those in a Barbara Stanwyck film festival...Whether hilarious or heartfelt, Ainsworth packs a pistol & the goods & should make waves with this new release." - John Hoglund, Cabaret Scenes
"Reminiscent of those classic Verve, Capitol or Columbia albums of the 1950's, but equally, it is so vintage 2013, you just need to grab a copy and listen." - Richard Irvine, 87.7-FM
"Laura Ainsworth is an exceptional singer, full of grace and color in her interpretations. Her ability to express the elements of the most classic jazz is incomparable; she is able to subtly display sensuality, darkness, romanticism, naughtiness, and feeling. 'Necessary Evil' is a smart & brilliant contribution to the world jazz scene" - Oscar Montagut, WorldMusicReport
"Delightful...Snazzy and jazzy...Charming and genuine... Recalls big band clubs in many a black-and-white film airing on TCM...Magically transporting to an era far gone..." - Kevin Thomas, Dallas Voice
"As sweet-voiced as a meadowlark crossed with a hummingbird...The kind of gig Mae West would uncork champagne to and then sit back in brocade and rhinestones... - Mark S. Tucker, AcousticMusic.com
