LES NEW PIC

DEAR READERS:

BIG NEWS OVER AT CABARET SCENES MAGAZINE....
Most of you know I am the Palm Springs Columnists for Cabaret Scenes Magazine that comes out every 2 months. But they will soon have a new WEB VERSION in which I will be able to make updates received by the 1st of the month for NEWS happening from the 1st through the 14th and by the 15th for NEWS happening from the 15th through the end of the month. It will feature PICKS OF THE WEEK, NEWS, VIDEOS, INTERVIEWS, REVIEWS (performances, events, benefits, parties, CD's) what ever I want to including. And there will be special ad rates for performers and venues with national and international exposure.

More on all this soon.

CABARET OPEN MIC MONDAYS AT VERMONT MAKES HISTORY:
Thank you MARY BOGUE for sending me this link to an article written for KCET which is the PBS station in Los Angeles. It is written by a singer who was just starting out who would come and sing with us. Like many of our singers, she got better over the months and gained confidence and grew to make a lot of friends and fans and became one of our Open Mic Family. It is nice to see she is still singing as well as become a wonderful feature writer.
I think you will find it a nice read:

WHAT HAPPENED AT
APPLAUSE WEDNESDAYS LAST WEEK:
It was another full house with amazing singers and lots of "Applause"! Joining to sing were ROSE KINSGLEY "Send In The Clowns", DONNY TEETERS "Secret Love" & "It's Magic", LINDSAY OUELLETTE "As Time Goes By" &"Just In Time", JEAN SORF "Begin The Beguine" & "The Way We Were", RAFE CORRELL "How Do You Keep The Music Playing" & "I'm Beginning To See The Light", RUSS ROOF "Embraceable You" WINETTE ROOF "Someone To Watch Over Me", DOUG GRAHAM "I Was Here" & "Dyin' Ain't So Bad", PAT MCCANN "I Remember You" & "A Foggy Day", NONI LAMBERTSON "More Than You Know" & "I Can't Give You Anything But Love", JEROME ELLIOTT "A Dance Mash Up Medley", BETH FORMELOZA "Unchain My Heart" (sorry didn't write in 2nd song), FERDIE FORMELOZA "Strangers In The Night" & "My Funny Valentine", RON COHN "Bennie's From Heaven", ROSANNE HOPKINS "Close To You" & "Moon River", JASON HULL "Come Away With Me" & "There Will Be Sad Songs", MARGE HARRIS "Accentuate The Positive", LARRY HARRIS "For Once In My Life", COURT GRAVES "I Could Have Told You So" & "Summer Wind', and newcomer KATHERINE WHITE "Do Nothing Till You Hear From Me" & "Here's To Life". So I hope we will see you all there this week. I understand CLAUDIA & JOEL SUSSMAN plan to be here a few days and will be coming to Applause Wednesdays, so come on down!

I took these pictures last week, but a few did not come out so sorry Donny, Pat, & Larry, they were just too blurry because they were all action shots. Maybe I will ask everyone to pose next time. Here they are in order of appearance:

PS: WE NEED MORE FACE BOOK LIKES ON THE

HEY LOOK... IT'S ME, JOEL & SOME OF THE GANG ON EYE ON THE DESERT

WHAT HAPPENED AT AJ'S ON SATURDAY:
It was our first night back after Art & John & the AJ's staff's vacation and boy what a night, a full house and at one point it was standing room only! There to sing were RON COHN "Princess Poupouee" & "Miss Otis Regrets", DONNY TEETERS "What A Difference A Day Makes" & "Here's To Life", RACHEL TYLER & MATTHEW TYLER, who were starring in "For Better..., Or Worse!" at my Sundays In Summer Series, came to sing 2 songs from the show "Fine" & "The Rose", RAFE CORRELL "Sway" & "Day In Day Out/Day By Day", DEANNE CONTE" "When I Fall In Love" & "I Have Dreamed", ALAN JON "Kiss Her Now" & "I Left My Heart In San Francisco", ROSANNE HOPKINS "All That Jazz" & "Ain't Misbehavin'", BETH FORMELOZA "What's New" & "Danny Boy", FERDIE FORMELOZA "The Impossible Dream" & "Who Can I Turn To", DOUG GRAHAM "They Say That Falling In Love Is Wonderful" & "Corner Of The Sky", FRANCESCA AMARI "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" & "Don't Get Around Much Anymore", newcomer SIOBHAN VELARDE "Crazy", MARGE HARRIS "Nevertheless" & "Cabaret" with a little help from AUDREY RUTTIN, LARRY HARRIS "Luck Be A Lady" & a parody of Left My Heart in SF with "I Lost My Ass In San Francisco", FREDD MILLER "The Very Thought Of You", VICKI KNIGHT "On A Wonderful Day Like Today" & "Happiness Is Just A Thing Called Joe", CLAUDIA THOMPSON "More Than You Know" & "Here's That Rainy Day", TONY D "My Funny Valentine" & JAN ABRAMS "It's Been A Long, Long Time" & "On A Clear Day". We also were happy to have TIBOR LASKO join us for the night on Upright Bass which was a treat. I took some pictures but only got some 'crowd shots' and I didn't want to use the flash so only a couple came out and here they are:

See you there next week. I am pretty sure KRISTIN TOWERS-ROWLES will be stopping by to sing a few songs from her Sundays In Summer Series show with Joel Baker on piano.

AJ'S NOTE: There is a HUGE parking lot just past the front lot on your left. Remember to make reservations and see you next time.

SUNDAYS IN SUMMER CABARET SERIES:
RACHEL TYLER & MATTHEW TYLER in "FOR BETTER... OR WORSE!" last week was a huge hit and this week will be too.

YOUR WEEKLY MOTIVATION FROM
ALEX VARDEN

HOW TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR VOICE

Try to minimize your speaking (especially on the phone!), and rest your voice often. Abusing your speaking voice directly affects your singing. Talking over traffic noises while on the freeway or speaking over a loud music can put big strain on your voice. Don't whisper either! This is also hard on your vocal cords. Become aware of how you speak. Listen to yourself. Your vocal cords are a delicate living tissue.

Drink lots of clean water and herb teas.  Avoid caffeine and cold drinks. Tea made from Slippery Elm coats your throat and is greatly soothing. Eat moist foods and juicy fruits. Soups and salads are wonderful. Avoid dry, abrasive and spicy foods. Cookies should be eaten slowly and carefully so that they don't scratch your throat.

De-stress. Your voice is an emotional instrument. It works best when we allow to let go of tension and stress. You don't have to be a Yoga lover to learn a few tricks to help your voice. Try the Lion exercise to open up your voice: shake your head, and roll your lips or tongue (brrrrr or rrrrrr). It's easy and fun to do.

In cold weather wear a turtleneck or a scarf. Turtle necks are wonderful protection in the winter or if you have a cold. Keep this handy garment on all year round to keep your voice box warm and ready to sing. In hot weather go easy on AC: it dries out your nose and vocal folds, and can cause sneezing and even allergies.

Constantly sip water when you are performing or rehearsing. If you are on stage don't be afraid to sip between songs. If you sing rock you don't have to be dainty about it. Spray it in your mouth and face! Be theatrical, be dramatic, but just make sure the water gets down your throat.

Rest. This step cannot be emphasized enough. 8 hours a day is a must! Tired bodies and brains do not carry voices well. Sleep promotes maximum cell repair. After a long session of performing your body needs sleep to fix the wear and tear on your throat.

Exercise at least 3 times a week. A sluggish body diminishes vocal potential. Voices respond well to living in a healthy body. Exercise does not mean you have to push yourself into oblivion. 30 min of moderate activity a day (brisk walking, slow jogging, biking, dancing, swimming) will do just fine.

Be well, stay well, because you deserve it! Maestro. :)

"My goodness, it is brilliant." - Koop Kooper, host, - "Cocktail Nation," Sydney, Australia

"Laura Ainsworth has not only met the incredible standard set by her debut recording but surpassed it..."  - Eric Harabadian, Jazz Inside

"Ainsworth segues in and out of moody ladies in love, like those in a Barbara Stanwyck film festival...Whether hilarious or heartfelt, Ainsworth packs a pistol & the goods & should make waves with this new release." - John Hoglund, Cabaret Scenes

"Reminiscent of those classic Verve, Capitol or Columbia albums of the 1950's, but equally, it is so vintage 2013, you just need to grab a copy and listen." - Richard Irvine, 87.7-FM

"Laura Ainsworth is an exceptional singer, full of grace and color in her interpretations. Her ability to express the elements of the most classic jazz is incomparable; she is able to subtly display sensuality, darkness, romanticism, naughtiness, and feeling. 'Necessary Evil' is a smart & brilliant contribution to the world jazz scene"  - Oscar Montagut, WorldMusicReport

"Delightful...Snazzy and jazzy...Charming and genuine... Recalls big band clubs in many a black-and-white film airing on TCM...Magically transporting to an era far gone..."
- Kevin Thomas, Dallas Voice

"As sweet-voiced as a meadowlark crossed with a hummingbird...The kind of gig Mae West would uncork champagne to and then sit back in brocade and rhinestones...
- Mark S. Tucker, AcousticMusic.com
