Art Wars | Weeks of   May 1 through May 12
Valley Christian High School is excited to introduce a new community service opportunity: Art Wars - Creating Art to Support a Cause.

This fundraising project is a response to the Human Trafficking Awareness Chapels. It is a way for our community to reflect on and react to the suffering of our brothers and sisters in Christ.

High School students and faculty will have the opportunity to create and donate an original work of art inspired by the theme/idea of "Hope."  No professional artistic talent required.  Participants just need to be courageous, creative, and thoughtful as they create their pieces of art.

Note from Advisor Don Dickinson, Dean of Students
One of our new students this year Emerson Scott, competed in the 2017 NorCal Trampoline & Tumbling State Championships in Reno, NV over spring break. Emerson placed 1st in trampoline, making him the new NorCal State Champion for Trampoline, Level 8. He also won 2nd place in the "Double Mini" event (much like vault), and earned national-qualifying scores in both trampoline and double mini.  Thanks to these results, Emerson is planning to compete in the Regional Championships held in Las Vegas in mid-May, and the USA Gymnastics National Championships in June. As Emersons' Advisor, I've enjoyed celebrating these exciting milestones in his life.

Washington D.C. 8th grade Trip

The 8th grade Washington D.C. trip offers a vast range of academic, spiritual, cultural, and social growth for our travelers. Seven days of history being brought to life before our eyes. Seven days of curriculum no longer in a text book but in our hands. Seven days of metropolitan culinary experiences to savor. Our group marched into Washington D.C. on April 1st. In our first four days we encountered prominent war memorials, renowned busts, and the Smithsonian and museums holding nearly 137 million objects. We honored those who had served our nation, so much as to give up their identity, at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Our students were privileged to run into Vice President Mike Pence at our Capitol building and listen in on a senate hearing as to whom our next Supreme Court Judge should be. We explored the grounds of General Washington's home and honored his memory at his grave. Our students finished out the D.C. portion of the trip with a student lead worship service focusing on military members in our community, how to honor and respect their services and one final 8th grade dinner dance party cruising on a Yacht out on the Potomac River. Day five was spent exploring Gettysburg and Amish country and our last two days we set out on foot in the Big Apple. In the midst of harsh rain and wind we explored Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty, the 9/11 museum, and went to the Broadway show  Wicked. The trip was eye opening and expanded each of our students' worldview, pushing them to THINK about us as a nation, our history, and how far we have come and accomplished in such a short amount of time.

Mission to Memphis Trip
Our Spring Break mission trip to Memphis was a GREAT success!  During Spring Break, a small group of VCS Freshmen and Mrs. Heise embarked on a service learning trip to Memphis, TN.  Students learned about the issues surrounding homeless families and how the Dorothy Day House is making a real difference in communities. At Orange Mound Outreach Ministries, our group was able to beautify a section of their property and spend a lot of time pouring into the lives of the many children who attend everyday.  Time was taken to visit the National Civil Rights Museum (a very powerful place!), attend a local church, take a tour of Memphis by air, and fellowship over dinner with the amazing BBQ only Memphis can offer!  The whole group is excited to go back next year!

Chapel Series
Our chapel mini-series, "Step," continues. The junior class presented a challenging message for each of us to "Step Up." Several class members shared how God is empowering them to step up into sacrificial serving opportunities and ways to venture into new territory with courage in their lives. From worship to the closing prayer, our juniors led a meaningful time of learning together. In one of the many powerful moments, Emily Ford share her passion for teaching swimming skills to young people who struggle with disabilities and her admonishment to all that we find ways to serve others, not just at school, but to also get off campus and make a difference in the world.
