Limoneira Lemons provide "KATA" for the Japanese Market
When housewives in Japan shop for the perfect lemon, chances are the perfectly curved, perfectly yellow, flawless lemon that she selects from the produce section of her local supermarket came from Limoneira. From cars to perfumes to Gucci handbags, the Japanese have a refined sense of the "kata"-or ideal form-any object should have. And when it comes to lemons, the Japanese are willing to pay top dollar for them. The bulk of those perfect lemons come from Limoneira. Literally thousands of cartons begin their long journey to the land of the rising sun from Limoneira orchards. First-choice lemons from Limoneira in Santa Paula are called "Santas." They leave the Limoneira packing house in cartons with a colorful label of a Santa Claus. "Our absolute highest-quality lemons go to Japan," says Alex Teague, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Limoneira Co. "We don't send anything to Japan that isn't perfect."
Limoneira's links to Japan go back to the company's earliest days. In photos of the lemon groves from the 1890s, dozens of Japanese workers can be seen among the suntanned faces of the pickers. Today, Japanese businessmen visit Limoneira's scenic plant regularly and Limoneira's senior management often visit Japan and the Pacific Rim countries. "We love selective customers," says Teague. "It sets the bar for all of us." For more information, please visit: www,SavortheCentralCoast.com |

Nations Restaurant News Reports Lemon is the Top 3rd Growing Ice Cream Flavor of 2012
A longtime dessert favorite, ice cream continues to gain popularity among U.S. consumers, pushing frozen treat restaurant operators to think outside the box with more innovative and unusual flavors. In the year ending April 2012, nearly two billion servings of ice cream were ordered at U.S. foodservice outlets, a figure that was up 2 percent from the same period the year prior, according to The NPD Group's CREST research. And while an International Dairy Foods Association survey found that tried-and-true vanilla still remains the most popular flavor among consumers, it's no surprise that nontraditional varieties are piquing the interest, and taste buds, of consumers nationwide. Among restaurants in the frozen treats category-which includes ice cream, yogurt, gelato, and Italian ice-unique flavors are a clear trend, according to Jana Mann, director of menu trends for Datassential, following an examination of more than 4,800 chain and independent restaurants. |
Where Foodies Go - Limoneira Lemons At Central Markets And H-E-B In Texas
Central Market is one of the freshest markets in the country. They offer a sumptuous selection of everything edible and go straight to the source to bring their customers some of the finest foods Texas and the rest of the world have to offer. With hundreds of cheeses, thousands of wines, acres of produce, and aisles of experts, Central Market is for everyone really into food.
But their commitment beyond the plate is the real reason they're a cut above. They believe food is a way of uniting families and communities to one collective dinner table, of preserving our cultures and our traditions. Each of their stores is a market in the truest sense-a place to exchange not only goods and services but also ideas. With community rooms, cooking classes, live music, and much more at every location, they spend every day celebrating what food is all about-bringing people together. They do this through their commitment to offering an unmatched selection of domestic and imported goods, classes to educate their customers about new and traditional cooking techniques, celebrations of different foods throughout the year, visits from world-renowned chefs, and special Foodie finds that are unique to their market. The first Central Market was opened in Austin in 1994 and was quickly dubbed "an amusement park for food lovers." The European-style fresh-market concept amazed shoppers and chefs alike, and the store quickly became one of Austin's most popular tourist destinations. It boasts an average of 2 million visitors each year. After years of witnessing customers drive hundreds of miles to stock up on fantastic food finds at the original Central Market, H-E-B decided to bring the Central Market experience to San Antonio, Houston, and a second location in Austin. By 2002, Central Market had added three more stores in Dallas, Plano, and Fort Worth, each one a fun and unique addition to the Central Market family. In 2006, the eighth Central Market opened in Southlake, increasing the company's presence in North Texas. A ninth store was added to the corner of Preston Road and Royal Lane in Dallas in 2012. Each debut of a Central Market location has attracted national attention for its innovative grocery experience that brings a must-have quality-of-life enhancement for food lovers. Central Market is a division of H-E-B, one of the largest independent food retailers in the nation. H-E-B began with one store in 1905, nestled in Kerrville, in the heart of the Texas Hill Country. H-E-B stands for "Here Everything's Better." Limoneira is proud to partner with Central Market and H-E-B by providing Limoneira lemons for this highly successful enterprise. Limoneira shares H-E-B and Central Market's commitment to community and sustainability and recognizes that we all have a role to play in pioneering for a brighter tomorrow. A Little Bit of Bella and Boris
Bela
Bela Lugosi, the youngest of four children, was born as Bla Ferenc Dezső Blask in Lugos (at the time part of Austria-Hungary, now Lugoj in Romania). He later based his last name on his hometown. Moving to Budapest in 1911, he played dozens of roles with the National Theatre of Hungary during the period 1913-1919. During World War I, he served as an infantry lieutenant in the Austro-Hungarian Army from 1914 to 1916. There he rose to the rank of captain in the ski patrol and was awarded a medal for being wounded at the Russian front. Due to his activism in the actors' union in Hungary during the time of the Hungarian Revolution of 1919, he was forced to flee his homeland. He first went to Vienna, Austria, and then settled in Berlin, Germany, in the Langestrasse where he continued acting. Eventually, he travelled to New Orleans, United States as a crewman aboard a merchant ship Lugosi was approached in the summer of 1927 to star in a Broadway production of Dracula adapted by Hamilton Deane and John L. Balderston from Bram Stoker's novel. Through his association with Dracula (in which he appeared with minimal makeup, using his natural, heavily accented voice), Lugosi found himself typecast as a horror villain in such movies as Murders in the Rue Morgue, The Raven, and Son of Frankenstein for Universal, and the independent film White Zombie. Five films at Universal - The Black Cat, The Raven, The Invisible Ray, Son of Frankenstein, Black Friday (plus minor cameo performances in 1934's Gift of Gab), and two at RKO Pictures, You'll Find Out and The Body Snatcher - paired Lugosi with Boris Karloff.
Boris
Karloff was born at 36 Forest Hill Road, Honor Oak, London, England. Karloff grew up in Enfield. He was the youngest of nine children, and following his mother's death, was brought up by his elder siblings. He later attended Enfield Grammar School before moving to Uppingham School and Merchant Taylors' School, and went on to attend King's College in London where he studied to go into the consular service. He dropped out in 1909 and worked as a farm laborer and did various odd jobs until he happened into acting. Once Karloff arrived in Hollywood, he made dozens of silent films. A number of his early major roles were in film serials, such as The Masked Rider (1919), The Hope Diamond Mystery (1920), and King of the Wild (1930). In these early roles he was often cast as an exotic Arabian or Indian villain. A key film which brought Karloff recognition was The Criminal Code (1931), a prison drama in which he reprised a dramatic part he had played on stage. Another significant role in the fall of 1931 saw Karloff play a key supporting part as an unethical newspaper reporter in Five Star Final, a harshly critical film about tabloid journalism which was nominated for an Oscar as Best Picture of 1931-32. The role of Frankenstein's monster in Frankenstein (1931) made Karloff a star. The bulky costume with four inch platform boots made it an arduous role but the costume and tortuously administered makeup produced the classic image. The costume was a job in itself for Karloff with the shoes weighing 13 pounds each, and Karloff having to sleep in between two books in order for him to not ruin his monster makeup. Universal Studios now owns the copyright to the makeup designed by Jack Pierce. A year later, Karloff played another iconic character, Imhotep in The Mummy. The Old Dark House (with Charles Laughton) and the starring role in The Mask of Fu Manchu quickly followed. These films all confirmed Karloff's new-found stardom. Horror remained Karloff's primary genre, and he gave a string of lauded performances in 1930s Universal horror films, including several with Lugosi, his main rival as heir to Lon Chaney, Sr.'s status as the top horror film star. After earning fame in Frankenstein, Karloff played Frankenstein's monster in two other films, Bride of Frankenstein (1935) and Son of Frankenstein (1939), with the latter also featuring Lugosi. Karloff would revisit the Frankenstein mythos in several later films as well, starring with the role of the villainous Dr. Niemann in House of Frankenstein (1944), in which the monster was played by Glenn Strange.

Lemon Candle Holder Leftover lemon halves can be a fun way to create your own candle holders. After using a half of lemon, clean out inside of the half. Place a tea light inside and light. This makes for a bright candle with a delightful lemon scent. Health Cold Sores/Fever Blisters: To shorten healing time, dab a little lemon juice on that irritating cold sore. The juice acts as an astringent and promotes healing. The acid will burn a little when applied to the sore, but a few seconds of discomfort is worth a blemish-free mouth. Beauty Remove Freckles: To help remove freckles, blanch and grind almonds and mix with white of an egg to which a teaspoon of lemon juice has been added. Spread on the face and wash after 20 minutes. Cleaning Clean Microwave: Squeeze the juice of half a lemon into a bowl of warm soapy water, and then place the lemon in the bowl. Place the bowl into the microwave and turn the microwave on. Keep the microwave on long enough to create steam. This should take approximately 3 minutes. During that time, the steam will start to clean your microwave. After the timer goes off, keep the door closed for several more minutes to allow the microwave to cool. Carefully, remove the bowl and wipe the microwave clean. |
