Fresh Direct

Limoneira lemons can be found at innovative FreshDirect, an online grocer that delivers to residences and offices in the New York City metropolitan area. FreshDirect also offers next-day delivery to most of Manhattan and parts of Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx, Staten Island, Nassau County, Westchester County, Fairfield County, Hoboken, New Jersey, Philadelphia, and Jersey City, New Jersey. FreshDirect custom-prepares groceries and meals for its customers, a manufacturing practice called Just-In-Time that reduces waste and improves quality and freshness.

Introduced to the New York market in 2002, FreshDirect has become popular for its convenience, fresh food, and lower prices than many Manhattan supermarkets.

FreshDirect uses advanced software to process thousands of orders placed on its website every night. Orders are dispatched to the kitchen, bakery, deli, as well as fresh storage rooms, produce ripening rooms, and production areas within the company's refrigerated facility. All order components are custom-cut, packaged, weighed, and priced. In the case of dry goods or frozen foods, items are picked from storage before being placed inside bins that travel along conveyors to the sorting area. There, products in a customer's order are scanned and gathered in corrugated fiberboard boxes. The boxes are labeled, recorded, and loaded into refrigerated delivery trucks.

FreshDirect is based in a 300,000-square-foot building in Long Island City and is one of the largest employers in the area.

Dessert with Limoneira Lemons Takes First Prize at Los Angeles Careers Through Culinary Arts Program

Los Angeles' Careers Through Culinary Arts Program (C-CAPS), is a pioneer and national non-profit leader which provides culinary career opportunities and scholarships to at-risk high school students. C-CAP manages the largest independent culinary scholarship program in the United States. It was founded in 1990 by Richard Grausman, renowned cookbook author, culinary educator, and recipient of the President's Service Award, and the James Beard Award for Humanitarian Service. Since inception, students have been awarded $37 million in scholarships and classrooms have received donations of $2.8 million worth of supplies and equipment. Many C-CAP alumni, now graduates of top culinary colleges, are working in leading restaurants and hotels throughout the country.

First place winner, Kenneth Anthony Greco was a 2004 C-CAP graduate from Benjamin Franklin High School. He has worked in various positions at Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles in Beverly Hills since 2004. Anthony credits C-CAP with creating a passion in him for the culinary arts, and encouraging him to pursue his dreams, as well as opening doorways to positions and relationships that have greatly influenced his life.

Kenneth said, "The Limoneira lemons were completely phenomenal and added just the right amount of lemon juice for the gele. Perfect." You can see Kenneth's beautiful dessert by viewing the video.

Windfall Farms Paso Robles - A Sense Of Place

Windfall Farms is an exclusive community that promotes and enhances the sustainability of local agriculture. It is located in one of the most important wine growing regions of California. The property has an extensive on-site water source which is especially significant, given that in the last 10 years, water for agriculture has been decreasing.

Paso Robles is an emerging wine growing region and brands from this region resonate with consumers. There are now over 102 wineries in Paso Robles and 26,000 vineyard acres. The area is California's 3rd largest, and fastest growing, wine region. Most varieties are red which thrive in the warm summer temperatures. Much of the production relates to Cabernet and Merlot. A.C. Supermarket data shows more consumers are drinking red wines than white or blush. Reds now account for 43% of wines sold at retail. Ten years ago, reds accounted for only 25% of sales.

Underlying Windfall Farms is a subdivision consisting of 76 lots of approximately 10 acres each. This subdivision was recorded in 1921 with unconditional certificates of compliance in place that afford a variety of development opportunities. The breathtaking setting, combined with world class facilities, provides the potential to become an exclusive agricultural or wine estate community in the heart of The Central Coast Wine Country.

Halfway between the two main California metropolises of Los Angeles and San Francisco is Paso Robles Wine Country. Located along California's famed Central Coast, the Paso Robles winegrape growing region's climate is perfect for the production of award-winning premium wines. A long growing season of warm days and cool evenings give rise to vibrantly ripened fruit with dynamic flavor profiles that translate beautifully in a glass of Paso Robles wine.

Traversing the landscape are 26,000 vineyard acres, producing more than 40 winegrape varieties - from Spanish to Italian, Bordeaux to Rhne, including the area's heritage variety Zinfandel. The styles of wine are diverse in this very distinct region.

Paso Robles' historic downtown is home to boutique stores, wine country cuisine, and tasting rooms fill the blocks surrounding Paso Robles' downtown city park. A scene right out of a Norman Rockwell painting, Paso Robles' downtown completes the picture of Paso Robles Wine Country.

Neighboring Paso Robles along the coast are the towns of San Simeon, home to Hearst Castle to the north, and the fishing village of Morro Bay to the south. In between are Cambria, Harmony, and Cayucos. All are within a short drive and worthy of exploration. Much like the marine air influence to the winegrapes, the coast is a perfect complement to a Paso Robles Wine Country experience.

Thousands of Women Attend Third Annual Women Today Expo in Ventura

Limoneira was on hand for the third annual Women Today Expo at the Ventura County Fairgrounds this past November. Attendees celebrated all aspects of a woman's life with exhibits, special speakers, celebrity guests, and cooking demonstrations. The Women Today Expo offered women - and men - a chance to explore almost 100 vendor displays and listen to a series of informative presentations at three stages on topics ranging from cooking to landscaping, to fitness and health.

Monica White of the Ventura County Star, which organized the expo, said the Women Today event began in Knoxville, Tennessee, where it has been successfully operating for 14 years. White noted that the event also resonates with Ventura County residents. She noted that women tend to be the primary purchasers in families. With its focus on home-related products, beauty products, financial services, health-related services, artists, and learning for children, the expo offers a wide range of booths to explore. Attendees also received free massages, enjoyed cocktails, or relaxed in lounge areas.

Presentations were given by "Top Chef" Fabio Viviani, Matt Blashaw of HGTV's "Yard Crashers," sisters Olivia Ward and Hannah Curlee, from NBC's "The Biggest Loser," and Jack Doughty, nurseryman at Green Thumb International.

Limoneira had a popular booth at the event. "It turned out beautifully," said Camille Yanez from Limoneira. "Our lemon and avocado skin care products were very popular, and everyone was intrigued by our Unleash the Natural Power of Lemons campaign. This was definitely a fun event."

Limoneira - Benefiting Agricultural Production with the Use of Beneficial Insects

Beneficial insects are any of a number of species of insects that perform valued services like pollination and pest control in farming and agriculture, where the goal is to raise selected crops. Insects that hinder the production process are classified as pests, while insects that assist production are considered beneficial. In horticulture and gardening; pest control, habitat integration, and 'natural vitality' aesthetics are the desired outcome with beneficial insects.

Encouraging beneficial insects, by providing suitable living conditions, is a pest control strategy often used in organic farming, organic gardening, or integrated pest management.

Limoneira built the first private insectary in California to grow beneficial insects in 1917 and has long been one of the cooperative partners in Associates Insectary. Since 1928, Associates Insectary has served its grower-members with beneficial organisms and integrated pest management in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. Associates Insectary is a grower-owned cooperative dedicated to providing complete pest control services to commercial citrus and avocado farmers throughout much of Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties.

The production of beneficials at Associates Insectary is a continuous process, producing up to two million insects and mites each and every day. These beneficials are liberated regularly on over 10,000 acres of orchards owned by our grower-members.

Biological control alone may not provide 100% economical control of certain pests at all times - certain destructive pests have no effective natural enemies. To maintain high quality crops in these cases, Associate's grower-members use these beneficials as part of an Integrated Pest Management program. This program greatly reduces the need for pesticides to control pests. When Associates Insectary must resort to the controlled spraying of pesticides, they use only materials approved by the Environmental Protection Agency. Their staff of California licensed Pest Control Advisors recommend treatments using oils, insect baits, and other selective materials which target pests and minimize the disruption of natural predators. Associates Insectary is dedicated to controlling orchard pests with the lowest possible impact on the environment.
