MESSAGE FROM DISTRICT GOVERNOR KAREN FILLMORE

WOW, what a year and how fast it has gone. We have worked hard this year with so many different club service projects and reaching out to Build Hope in our Communities and around the World. I am so proud of our 4-C6 District and humbled to be your District Governor for this 2014-2015 Year.

Some of the District Projects that were held this year and major accomplishments were:
  • Receiving 4 Spot Cameras;
  • Backpacks for Kids;
  • 2 new District Projects added: Stop Hunger Now and Guide Dogs for the Blind;
  • Lions Eye Foundation - Helen Keller Award recognition;
  • LPCCI support and Canine Companions Walk and Roll in Cupertino;
  • Support for Blind Centers in Monterey County and Santa Clara County;
  • Melvin Jones luncheon and purchase of 15 MJF's and 2 PMJF's;
  • New Lions Club in Gonzales, another to be in Downtown San Jose;
  • LCI consultants to our district on three separate occasions;
  • "Celebrating Differences" event for children and adults with disabilities;
  • Diabetes Youth Camp fundraiser success;
  • held the Quest program for the first time;
  • the beginnings of an emergency preparedness program;
  • purchase of a district first aid pack;
  • purchase of a District 4-C6 banner that has been used to promote our district and membership;
  • Peace Poster Contest winner from our District and winner from California;
  • submitted the first blind student essay from our district;
  • Environmental Photo Contest held;
  • Student Speaker Contest held and supported by many clubs with the final in San Jose;
  • the Women's Development Symposium;
  • California Leadership Forum in our district;
  • Council of Governors in our district this year.

And this is just to name a few. This list does not count all the many, many club projects and fundraisers that were held in your clubs this year.

We are now 45 clubs strong, very close to our 1250 number, a positive growth year.

Can you tell I am beaming with joy!

Our 4-C6 Convention was a great opportunity to recognize so many of you and your clubs for all you do. There are many others who have been busy reaching out to your communities, and I want to commend all of you for making our District the very best.

We were so fortunate to have ID John Pettis, Jr and his wife Lion Liz from Massachusetts join us at our convention this year. He was perfect and made us laugh so much we were in tears and the stories he told and the camaraderie and connection we felt with both ID John and his wife Liz will not be forgotten.

What a joy to recognize so many of you and just to name a few:

Lion Linda  Pugliese for Presidential  medal; Lion PCC Liz Crooke for Presidential Leadership Award, several Presidential certificate award recipients, and Lion of the Year Kevin Johnson and two Emerging Lions of the Year: Mark Arrellano and Gina Casteneda; Couple of the Year Bob and Suzie DeUnger, and of course, our Granito award recipient, Sunnyvale Host Lions.

It was so fun "Dancing to the Music" with DJ Mike's music and seeing what all of the clubs came up with for their skits, tail twister contest, parade and of course the no talent contest and our wonderful hospitality rooms, food faire, and newly elected officers. Thank you all for helping me have so much fun at our Convention. It was a blast.

  Thank you also to all the clubs that gave me the generous governor's gift. I will cherish it and it will be a constant reminder of all the support I felt from individuals and clubs throughout my DG year.

I look forward to supporting DGE Jan Miller in this coming Lion's year. In the meantime, I will be enjoying a rest in one of my favorite places and my second home, Hawaii, at the International Lions Convention.

Much Aloha, Gov. Karen
MD4 Council of Governors

MD4 Council Of Governors meeting held in San Jose June 4-7 was a HUGE success thanks to so many clubs that came and supported our amazing 4-C6 hospitality room. The food presentations were superb and so many different choices from Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night.

Hosting on Thursday was CS George and Donna Jewett who helped Willow Glen Lions with food delivery and set up, Friday PDG Marlene Duffin and PDG Becki Stange, and Saturday PDG Ray and Frances Maglalang. Thanks to our many bartenders who jumped in and helped and to PDG Denny Miller and our DGE Jan Miller for their support and help in closing the hospitality room.

I have received so many thank yous for the entire weekend from our Hawaiian evening at the Blind Center with the Hawaiian Band and wonderful food preparation and BBQ (thanks to CS Rick Silveria and Lanny Ross). The guest speakers for lunches on Friday, Stuti Vishwabhan, and Saturday, Gina Castaneda, were talked about continually throughout the weekend (many thanks to Tim Piumarta for handing all the sound equipment for those two events). The Saturday evening dinner with the 10th Ave Jazz band and (Allen King for his help with his sound equipment and video presentation) topped off the Saturday evening with some singing and lots of fun and dancing.

We have had overwhelming reviews of the hospitality room and the entire week-end. Thank you PDGs Larry Hidalgo for all the work with the hotel arrangements and to PDG Chris Morris for handling many details and ticket delivery and all the PDGs who helped with this event.

4-C6, we have left our mark on the California MD4 Multiple, and many will be talking about this event for quite some time. Many, many thanks for all of your hands participating and making this event so successful. Kudos to the following Lions clubs: Willow Glen, Scales of Justice, Milpitas Gateway, Sunnyvale Host, Almaden Super, Saratoga, Milpitas Executive, Cabrillo Host, Morgan Hill, San Martin, Los Amigos, Sampaguita, Los Gatos and Ibis Universal Corporation, and all the individuals who represented those clubs. If I have left any club out, please accept my apologies and know your help made this an event to remember.

Aloha Nui Loa ( Much Love), DG Karen
MESSAGE FROM DISTRICT GOVERNOR-ELECT JAN MILLER

The International Convention is just around the corner and I will be receiving more schooling, so let's hope it helps me with the district!

I have a lot of new people on committees, so be patient and help them out if they need it, please!

Installation will be at San Martin Lions Hall, July 19th and will start at 1:30 p.m.! Please welcome PID Bob, Lion Vickie, and Lion Jennifer Smith as they are guests of District 4-C6 and will be Installing me! I have known PID Bob, Lion Vickie and Lion Jennifer for 20 years! These are very special people and they will do anything and everything for you!
We still have tickets to sell and they are $35.00 apiece! Please see any PDG for tickets!

Cabinet meetings have been set for August 22nd at Carmel Youth Building and February 20th at the Veterans Memorial Building in Hollister! November's cabinet meeting is still in the works.

We have two Leadership classes coming up! One is Nov. 11-13th at Sacramento Hilton Arden West and the other one is Jan. 16-18th at Ontario Airport Hotel. These would be great to send your first vice presidents to for training!

We will be having Ronnie Martin fly out during the month of September to help us with new clubs. The date is not final yet, but I can't wait!

Just to let everyone know, my Council wants to do Lions Eyes Across California again, and keep it going yearly! The date will be announced at the cabinet meeting.

One of the ideas I have is to have two bowling tournaments in the North and South and raise money for the Family Center of City of Hope! I'm trying to get the Council to do something in their district for the Family Center, but it's a work in progress! Maybe the 2nd's would be interested?

The last thing I want to say is, we have had a fabulous year with Governor Karen and she has put our district back to where it should be in numbers with the help of all of you! Remember, it just doesn't take a small number of people to get a club going or adding to a club, it takes many!

Governor Karen you are going to be a hard one to follow, but I will do my best!

Thank you, District 4-C6
Jan Miller, DGE

MESSAGE FROM FIRST VDG-ELECT BARBARA CHAMBERLAIN

There are so many Lions for me to thank this year. First, our District Governor Karen Fillmore has worked hard all year and has increased the district membership. The chartering of the Gonzales Club was an outstanding achievement.

DG Elect Jan Miller, PDG Denny, 2nd DG Bob Stewart and Lion Becky Stewart have been a tremendous help to me this year. The members of Cabrillo Lions have been so supportive during all of my visitations. They made a super effort at our 4C6 convention in Sacramento.

Thanks to Lion Tim Piumarta and Linda Pugliese for their nominating speeches.

And a special thanks to PCST Dave Chamberlain for attending most of my club visitations.

My advice to club members is to sometimes step back from all

of your projects and have some fun.

I enjoyed meeting so many hard working Lions on our travels and look forward to helping your clubs and DG Elect Jan this coming year.

MESSAGE FROM SECOND VDG-ELECT BOB STEWART

Fellow Lions,

Thank you for enabling my service as your next 2nd VDG.

Our District is poised to achieve exciting and great success over the next few years. But to do so also requires that we audit current guidelines and processes and improve where it makes sense. Here's one local Lions area for audit consideration:

Proposal: Form a District "Dues Committee" at the August Cabinet Meeting to rethink and redefine the financial dues requirement to be a Lion in District 4-C6.

Currently, each Lion pays annual dues to their Club. The Club forwards a portion to the Multiple District and to International. There are a few exceptions. Clubs may elect to pay the dues of some of its members. International also allows leeway - for example, military veterans and spouses. In addition to dues, Lions are asked to serve (time and talent).

Requiring dues can be problematic and troublesome. For example, one could argue that requiring financial wherewithal establishes that Lions is an elite organization, one that is inwardly exclusive rather than inclusive. We have had good Lions, including Zone and Region Chairs in District 4-C6 who have quietly disappeared from our membership because of personal hard times. We each likely know non-Lions with superb records of local community service, members of our community who would eagerly join a local Lions Club except for dues. They want to be part of the "We Serve," but simply cannot afford the financial requirement. And what about the "graduating" Leos, who want to take the next step but instead rightly prioritize their scarce income on education?

In 1987, LCI finally opened its doors to become non-gender. In 2015, consider a pivotal step at the District level to become even more non-discriminatory, to encourage anyone desiring to serve as a Lion to join our District - to include the less advantaged and not just those blessed financially. Maybe we establish a District 4-C6 "Scholarship" Fund. Those in need of financial assistance would privately apply to the District to earn their dues payment through "X" hours of District approved hands-on project service.

Your comments, feedback, and interest level for proposed "Dues Committee" membership would be most welcome.

Bob
