PEAKS & VALLEYS:

Valley

Discord: It's 3am, my 11-month old is crying. Actually he's standing up in his crib about 2 feet from my head screaming at the top of his lungs. Why is he so close? Because we live in a two bedroom apartment in Manhattan and I'm not willing to move him into the girls' room until he's weaned from his 5:30am bottle. Also, I tend to pass him bottles of water if he's crying at 11:30pm because he'll just go right back to sleep with no crying.

Tonight, however I've decided I have to break us of this habit so he's protesting. Usually the girls sleep through anything, but for some reason his crying wakes my two-year old. She yells for her paci and when I blindly feel around the bed and locate it for her, she goes right back down. On the way back to my room, I decide I'll lay on the couch for ten minutes because it's easier to let him cry when I'm not in the room.

After ten minutes I can't take it anymore so I go in and pick him up. I bounce and shhh him which helps, thank goodness. Since he's a big boy, 24 pounds, I can only do this for so long and have to put him back down. Of course when I do he starts to cry again. At the same time my four-year old calls because her 'nighttime panties' have leaked and her bed is wet. Randomly, she's in good spirits and waits patiently (half-asleep) for me to get her a new sheet and jammies. Then she exclaims, "Guess what, Mommy? Look, my bandaid is still on!" I have to laugh. It's 4am and she's just delighted... in any case I'm lucky because my kids usually don't wake eachother up and all go back to sleep easily. Also, by the time I'm done with the bedwetting situation, the baby has fallen back to sleep, which means I can go back to bed.

Harmony:  Vacation.  It's so amazing to be on vacation - no bills, no errands, no worries - just taking it day by day.  Time at the beach, in the water, sea air, sand - good friends & loving family.
