LISTENING TO THE WINDS OF CHANGE ON THE PRAIRIE

In the tradition of an old-fashioned town meeting, residents of Big Stone County came together last week to share their individual visions for economic development in their close-knit community. Like most discussions about hopes and dreams for a better future, participants engaged in lively debate that challenged popular notions about sleepy small-town life.

Independent writer and producer Anne Queenan posted this first-hand account of an InCommons Listening Session in Clinton, Minn. - a small community nearly 200 miles from the Twin Cities - as residents lamented the loss of jobs and young people from the region and shared conflicting feelings about a proposed granite quarry project.

With a thoughtful voice and a neutral perspective, Anne's blog post captures the essence of InCommons Listening Sessions - complex, yet accessible debate framed through the lens of cooperation, mutual trust and respect. Together, residents explored deep and meaningful perspectives on rural life, progress and change. They agreed whole-heartedly that their community is a special place, with a sense of history that must be preserved. But participants' opinions soon diverged, as common definitions of "preservation" and "progress" were scarce.

While the debate about quarrying in Big Stone County continues, it's important to recognize that the act of listening itself is a useful, productive exercise. It encourages conversations that matter to the people closest to a particular issue or challenge, and it gives every person a chance to contribute to the conversation.
