Lists of Hiroshima, Nagasaki A-bomb victims aired out to prevent damage

HIROSHIMA/NAGASAKI, May 18 Kyodo

Books containing the names of 421,728 victims of the 1945 U.S. atomic bombings were aired out in annual ceremonies in Hiroshima and Nagasaki on Wednesday to prevent damage from humidity ahead of the
rainy season.
In Hiroshima, after city officials observed a moment of silence at 8:15 a.m., the time the atom bomb fell on the city on Aug. 6, 1945, 97 books with the names of 269,446 victims, including 5,501 that have been newly added, were removed from the cenotaph at Hiroshima's Peace Memorial Park.
The books also contained the names of eight victims of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki on Aug. 9, 1945, who had asked for them to be kept in the cenotaph in Hiroshima before they died.
The city will add the names of victims whose deaths have been newly confirmed since Aug. 6 last year from mid-June and will place them in the chamber at the peace memorial ceremony on Aug. 6.
In Nagasaki, meanwhile, after a bell rang and a moment of silent prayer was held by local officials at 11:02 a.m., the time the bomb was dropped, 154 books containing the names of 152,282 victims were ventilated at the Nagasaki National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims.
Officials checked for damage on each page of the books, which started to be complied in 1968 and include a blank one for unidentified victims. The names of newly confirmed victims since August last year will be added to the books from June and will be placed for storage following the annual peace memorial ceremony on Aug. 9.
