VOLUNTEER YOUR TIME AS AN ENGLISH LANGUAGE TUTOR
Make a difference in someone else’s life!
Did you know there are more than 15,000 people in Milford and Stratford without a high school diploma? Did you know there are more than 1,600 adults who are not fluent in English. Did you know there are 53 non-English languages spoken in these communities? (Data taken from the Milford and Stratford School District Strategic School Profile, 2012-2013)
Literacy Volunteers is offering volunteer TUTOR TRAINING classes in ESL (English as a Second Language) and Basic Literacy. TUTOR TRAINING classes in Milford will be held at Fanny Beach Community Center, 16 Dixon Street, Milford from 6:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 28, October 5, 12, 19. 6:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
TUTOR TRAINING classes in Stratford will be held at the Stratford Library, 2203 Main St. Stratford from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 26, November 2, 9, 16, 23. 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Volunteer tutors will learn techniques to assist Basic Literacy and ESL students with dialogue, listening comprehension, oral fluency, phonics, reading comprehension and writing skills. No previous teaching experience required! All prospective tutors will be interviewed in advance.

For further information, call The Literacy office between the hours of 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. at 203-878-4800 or stop by the Stratford Library Satellite Office on Wednesdays, 10:00 – 11:30 a.m. Additionally, if you are interested in working with students preparing for their GED (General Equivalency Diploma) examination, or prefer to help adult students with basic literacy skills, call the Center’s office to schedule your orientation meeting.
