Crooklyn

A Film by

Spike Lee

"Crooklyn" tells the story of the Carmichael family living in Brooklyn, New York during the summer of 1973. Woody, a hopeful jazz musician and Carolyn, a rigorous schoolteacher, struggle to raise their five children in Bed-Stuy. Inspired by Lee's own childhood, the film focuses on the experiences of the Carmichael's only daughter named Troy who experiences the in's and out's of what it's like to grow up in a family comprised of four brothers living in New York.

Spike Lee was born in 1957 and was raised in Brooklyn, New York. Film "found him" during the summer of 1977 after his sophomore year at Morehouse College when he acquired a super 8mm camera from his friend and began filming everyday life in New York. After returning to Morehouse in the fall Lee knew from there on what he wanted to be, a filmmaker. Once he completed his undergraduate studies he continued his educational studies and received a Master in Fine Arts in Film from NYU. Lee's first feature length film to hit the big screen came in 1986 with
She's Gotta Have it and the rest is history. Spike Lee is know for confronting social issues through his films and has produced countless thought provoking that have inspired a whole new generation of fearless filmmakers.
