June  2014

Summer is here... or at least our Summer Reading Program is!

We've got hundreds of children's programs planned over the next 10 weeks to keep kids engaged in reading while they are out of school.  This year's theme, Fizz! Boom! READ! is all about the wonders of science.  Check out our website for program calendars and to sign up for our summer reading program through our very cool Discovery Lab.

The Discovery Lab lets children read and write reviews about their favorite books and keep track of what they've been reading over the summer.  Drop by any of our libraries to pick up some great summer reading and to take part in entertaining and educational programs and craft sessions.

Once you've gotten the books for the kids sorted out, don't forget to pick something up for yourself!  Summer is the perfect time to get lost in a beach read or take time to catch up on all those great books you've been meaning to read.  Drop by our facebook page and let us know what's on your summer reading list or check out what others are reading to get some ideas for your list!

Start reading now as next month we're going to launch a contest for best book reviews throughout July and August.  Look for more information in our July newsletter and on our facebook page.

Happy reading!

Library Foundation

First, we thank the wonderful folks at GnomeCon, Inc. for their

Dottie Lynch (R) pictured with GnomeCon team at check presentation.

generosity in donating the proceeds of their annual convention to the library again this year. This non-profit organization is dedicated to education, literacy, and creativity through the spectrum of the science-fiction / fantasy multi-genre culture, and hosts yearly conventions and events which highlight these important aspects. This is the third year they have provided support for children's programming and services at the library and we know that they are as excited as we are about the theme for this year's Summer Reading Program (SRP).

Since school closed a couple of weeks ago, area libraries have been filled with the sounds of children taking part in the library's Fizz! Boom! Read! science-themed Summer Reading Program. Thousands of children will take part in hundreds of programs and read thousands of hours this summer during the program which runs through August 16.

The popular annual program helps children maintain or even increase their reading skills over the long school break. However, it is funded solely through our outreach efforts to the community and your generous  gifts. This year we did not have the opportunity to respond to a matching gifts challenge grant as we have the past three years. As a result, our fundraising efforts have fallen short of our goal.

But there is still time for YOU to help fuel the success of our young readers' efforts before our fiscal year ends on June 30. Make your gift today and help area children enjoy special programs and

READ! SUCCEED! all year long through our joint initiatives with the library system. This year we were pleased to introduce our community to Homework Help in the form of free online tutoring. This was not paid for out of the library's operating budget but through funds we raised for that purpose. It levels the playing field for our area students and  allows them to access the help they need to excel academically.

With heartfelt gratitude for your support,

Dottie Lynch, President

Volunteers Needed for Used Book Store

Live Oak Public Libraries is looking for long-term volunteers to operate a used book store at the Bull Street Library.

If you have a love for books, great customer service skills and a few hours to spare during the week, this could be the perfect volunteer spot for you! Duties will include creating displays, restocking shelves, pricing books and operating the cash register.

All proceeds from the store will benefit library branches in Chatham, Effingham and Liberty Counties. While these are unpaid positions, volunteering at the library can be a rewarding experience! To find out more about this exciting opportunity, call Scott Pool at (912) 652-3661 or
